Because Bethesda doesn’t understand fallout. They think it’s a post apocalyptic setting, when fallout is a post post apocalypse setting.

By this point they've been in charge of the IP longer than Interplay ever was. It's now their series, and they're very clear that it's a post-apoc setting. Any attempts at large scale rebuilding like the NCR will be reset by whatever means necessary. Just wait until they reveal that Vault City and the Shi are also gone or pale shadows of their former glory.

I read an interview by the show creators and it infuriated me. They see fallout as bleak and hopeless. They feel like it's inevitable for the constant fall of society. In the games society is constantly progressing, from Shady Sands to fricking New Vegas. The master in fallout 1 dies while telling you to stay hopeful.

The whole point of fallout is “what if the atomic 50s actually happened?”. Everything is nuclear powered and the design therefore stayed in the 50s and the bombs dropped in 2077 which locked the aesthetic forever since bethesda are midwits and don’t think that society would evolve at all for 200 years after the bombs dropped

A big part of why cars look the way they do now and not like they did in the 50s is to do with better fuel efficiency and aerodynamics but since the cars and everything else is powered by nuclear energy there is no point in making things more aerodynamic or whatever

    I'll repeat in this thread
    >Walton Goggins (the Ghoul) actually thinks his character is a WW2 vet and the flashback scenes take place in the 1950s

I don't really blame him, the whole "2077" thing makes no sense, it's literally just "the 1950s with robots"
They have fricking black & white antenna TVs and phonograph players, and everybody drives 1950s cars and wears 1950s clothes

So why are there sentient robots all over

        Anonymous

Fallout 1 robots were dumb as a toaster. The only sentient robot was a VAX buried deep in a secret base that was room sized. When Bethesda took over they made the normal small bots quite a bit smarter in 3, but still fairly dumb. Then 4 had the model Codsworth and Curie are suddenly basically have human-level AI.
There's never been a lore reason for the increase in intelligence, it's just narrative choices. If you must have an explanation, let's say they made miniaturized vacuum tubes instead of transistors.

wrong. transistors were invented in at least 2020's according to fallout 4.

the artists just thought that 50's tech looked cool. So they set out to make a future science that looked like what the Golden Era of science fiction thought that future science would look like. Vacuum tubes, ray guns, mutants, the whole works.

I've only ever played New Vegas and it wasn't even good. The only memorable thing was sending the ghouls "to the moon." The "companions" were god awful, the factions were also awful, and I didn't end up beating the main questline.

Maybe the old CRPG's were good in their time but I thought the show was much better than New Vegas.

This is just going off memory, but basically our timeline and the one from Fallout are identical up to WW2, then they diverge after that. I believe in the Fallout verse technology goes a different route in the atomic age, with digital circuitry not really existing like in ours, and things like the transistor not being invented (or maybe it was something else? I’m not 100% sure). Also in this timeline soft versions of fusion were used to power machinery so you get things like energy weapons and robots.

As for the culture, for some reason not entirely explained in-game it never really progressed past 50’s era Americana but I believe it’s related to the different tech route they went on. Out of game reasoning was because the developers wanted the game to resemble what the 50’s envisioned for sci-fi and futuristic tech.

As for the Soviets, they along with Europe collapsed as a threat because I think of resource depletion and wars, and USSR didn’t get nukes as early as they did in our timeline. But China did and basically replaced the soviets as the big communist threat.

This timeline continued like this until the second half of the 21st century and then eventually tensions came to boiling point and China invaded Alaska due to desperation for oil, similar to what the Japanese did in WW2 only more dire. After a couple years America won Alaska back and went on the offensive and China freaked the frick out and launched the nukes first. (The show implies corporate America contributed to this)

As far as the nuclear exchange went, America got bombed to the point where the government collapsed but China got nuked into oblivion, there’s a part in one of the games where you’re on a ship in space and you can see Earth and there’s a GIANT fricking crater where China used to be. And I think it’s implied Europe got nuked too but it that topic was largely untouched on as well as anywhere but America in the games post apocalypse

    >fallout is set in 1950s cold war red scare era

My theory is that given the over 100 years since the end of WW2 and beginning of WW3, the world largely moved past racism. Negative stereotypes were more focused on nationality and economic policy

That’s not really racist though, it’s unfortunate, but logical given the circumstances.
