Why is Futurama funny? What about it makes you giggle?
And you have to give an explanation, no direct quoting or posting of scenes.
I'm asking because I think it's more interesting to see people to explain why it's funny rather than argue with people who think it's unfunny with shitflinging with no real substantial argument on either sides
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
Shopping Cart Returner Shirt $21.68 |
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
nobody drives in new york, theres too much traffic
peak humor
>no direct quoting
I've made this joke to so many people but nobody gets it, they just tell me about all the cars
I think it's very witty at times. Jokes that seem very dumb on the surface but are somewhat intelligent underneath. Also the jokes that are just straight up so dumb they are funny. That said I got burned out on this show and haven't watched it in 6 or 7 years now.
give examples of it being witty. A lot of jokes are really low brow or eye rolling puns
Hey this guy is an ox! He's got oxen-like strength, hey he needs a nickname right? Let's call him clamps.
Do you have an extra goto 10 line?
The entire holophonor opera episode
This would be an example of Futurama having a witty line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia4YrCShFrQ
It's a math joke. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_state
See, it's funny because it's true. If they did't have a quantum microscope that could measure results to the nearest atom it would have been judged a dead heat, and Farmsworth would have won - but without that context the line just sounds insane.
…and then it turns out he was working on a team of atomic super men that went head to head in a basketball game against the Globetrotters who turned out to really be alien men from a planet of tall black basketball players. Really absurd shit when you lay it all out there
With freeway on ramps for arms and hearts black as coal...
This here for example was a gag I remember loving. I laughed until I stopped. It's only on for a split second, and if you don't know math it doesn't mean anything - but if do know math it's gold, Jerry, gold.
It also demonstrates the mentality of the writers. You want a lot of dumb jokes. A LOT of dumb jokes. Because well, everyone loves dumb jokes. But you also want few midwit and up jokes that most of your audience will miss. So long as none of the smarter jokes distracted from the dumb ones. Coz they knew that anyone that caught them would be a fan for life.
Heh that is a good one.
I don't get it. Is the joke that it's studio 54 (1x2x27)? That is not clever in any way.
Unless there is something else I'm missing? Futurama did a lot of these "haha thing you know still exists but is called slightly different in the future"
>I don't get it. Is the joke that it's studio 54 (1x2x27)?
Yes. Formally 54.
>Unless there is something else I'm missing?
A sense of humor.
Are you baiting? That is like peak midwit humor
>guys, I get the joke! I remember basic math learned in high school! I know what studio 54 is! this show is SO clever!
The finglonger is unironically the only joke I remember from the show
The one that stuck with me was in the "lost city of Atlanta" episode. Bender is trying to fish but catches nothing but trash. He goes towards the beach parasol and starts with "Well, if I can't catch a fish..." and you instinctively think he's going to continue with "...I'll catch some rays." But instead he bends the parasol into a giant hook and says "...I'll catch a bigger fish."
>NOOOO YOU CANT JUST FIND SOMETHING FUNNY YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY
kys
if only I had my wallet with me
Zoidberg's entire existence is a joke in himself. A prestigious doctor, but also so poor he sleeps in garbage, and codified as israeli, but also a shellfish (which israelites are forbidden from handling).
>Why is Futurama funny? What about it makes you giggle?
Zoidberg
For me, it’s Zap Brannigan, baby.
Mostly because it is. Now go back homosexual >>>Cinemaphile try not to get the pox
It's just classic, creative, witty humor
Explaining humor ruins humor unless the explanation itself is part of the humor.
let me answer this way
>relatable main character
>interesting supporting characters
>set in an interesting place
>funny situation that is character driven and not just I said something I was not supposed to
>often thought provoking and explores ideas about ourselves and even popular culture
>often thought provoking and explores ideas about ourselves and even popular culture
That's it. And it is satire of ourselves and sci-fi, cos the 20th century idiot often times comes up with solutions to 30th century problems.
How did they get the entire original trek cast plus Frakes for a one off
They didn't get James Doohan because his agent refused.
FOX money.
>often thought provoking and explores ideas about ourselves
That is accurate anon, it usually poses philosophical questions interjected with the plot
Bender drinks beer all day because it powers his fuel cells and smokes cigars because they look cool.
Zoidberg not being allowed into the bot mitzvah because he is a shellfish. also best episode.
The Snu Snu episode was funny. It still makes my penis laugh.
Explain to me why "a man walks into a bar" jokes are funny and provide examples
those jokes always suck
walks into a bar. He's gay and has no friends.
A cowboy walks into a bar. He notices a russian looking fellow with the coat, shapka and vodka bottle half finished.
He goes next to the russian guy, takes 4 coins out of his pocket, whips them in the air and shoots four bullets. All 4 coins fall on the ground with a hole right in the middle.
The Russian, impressed, says "Great feat comrade, what you name?"
The cowboy answers with a self fulfilled smile: "they call me Bill, Buffalo Bill".
The Russian then stands up, lowers his pants, and whips 4 huge dicks moving around like tentacles.
The cowboy, shaken, asks: "w-who a-are y-you?"
The Russian answers: "them call me Bill too, Tcherno Bill".
A horse walks into a bar. The bartender asks the horse if it’s an alcoholic considering all the bars he frequents, to which the horse replies I don’t think I am” “I think not!” POOF! The horse disappears.
You see, this is a joke about Descartes famous line 'i think, therefore i am'. But if i had explained that before the joke i would be putting Descartes before the horse
Heh
Pfft, imagine a horse pushing Descarte around. That's just ridiculous
the jokes are well written, smart and comr quickly nd often like golden age simpsons.
Why do you think directly referencing a joke is not proving why it's funny? do you have autism?
>the jokes are smart and come quickly
the humor in the show is very vaudeville. ironically the show is set in the future, but the joke style is set in the past.
The absurdist juxtoposition between high concept science fiction storylines, and completely moronic characters.
Tbh I feel like they overdid it with fry a lot. Seems like he'd be in a supervised living facility with half the shit he says
"I'm having one of those... thoughts but with pictures!"
"An idea?"
Nobody who can put their pants on by themselves is that stupid
>Nobody who can put their pants on by themselves is that stupid
You don’t get out much, do ya champ?
"You gotta help me, Leela. Trapped in here I'm reduced to going in the middle of the room like an animal."
"Animals go in the corner."
"Of course, the corner!"
Fry is a precious baby, and I love him.
>HEY I DID IT!
>wait that isn't me.
There is no "too dumb" with Fry.
Einstein is a hard name to remember
Exactly, one of the best episodes is when the Giant Invader Brains invade earth and make everyone completely stupid except for Fry.
This brain is supposed to be a supergenius but then falls for Huck Finn's iconic prank of duping the other kids into thinking that paining a fence is a fun activity.
Fry, who is immune to their brain sucking powers because he's already so stupid. Frickan genius. In the land with no brains, the man with half a brain is a king.
Brain sucked Leela puts her hand in a fire.
>Ow! Fire hot!
Brain sucked Professor attempts to help out by doing the same thing.
>Ow! Fire INDEED hot!
Just the fact he says "THE PROFESSY WILL HELP" cracks me up.
The new season sounds like dogshit
This is fake right
No

Whys it say release date 2022 when it comes out in 2023?
The binary entry makes me feel like it's real. In which case, I'd rather die than watch "Zap gets cancelled"
the worst part of something like Zapp Gets Cancelled is that THEY ALREADY DID THAT
I guess they couldn't do 'Zap appears on Epstein's flight logs' for obvious reasons
Calling it now, how the west was 1010001 will be the best episode
All the Way Down will
The CC-era trendy social commentary episodes were all terrible and now we're getting an entire season of them?
You bet, chud :^)
You act like the original show didn't have a lot of social commentary too. In fact it probably had an equal amount as the new seasons. It's just a lot shittier in the new seasons because it's a lot more moronic to bring up 2010s trends. I distinctly remember and eye rolling joke where fry responds to something with "like the kardasians!"
He might have meant Cardassians. They're a race in Star Trek, and he's a giant Star Trek fan.
kek maybe, it's been forever since I saw that episode and don't remember which one. I retract my statement if so but still. seeing an episode about a literal EYEpod and momcorp mimicking the marketing of them at that time really annoys the shit out of me.
>rage against the vaccine
wow how topical and current
I can't wait to dread how awful this episode is... if it's real.
Please tell me this is an image made by a god tier troll to make me mad
Please
>parasites regained
>Xmas
only thing I hate more than (episode about current thing) is (episode rehashing an older better episode). That shit ruined always sunny for me.
futurama has been dogshit since it left fox
the movoes were shit and every CC episode was shit, even the time travel one with fry's mom sois love to say has soul
>Futurama has become a sad relic of the past.
Now that is irony.
Honestly, Zapp Gets Cancelled sounds kino. Especially since he's just going to get un-cancelled at the end of the episode.
gonna be weird seeing futurama shill vaccines for big pharma
You don't need an argument to explain why you think something is funny or unfunny. It's a natural reaction to something. Explaining why something is funny doesn't work because there are too many variables to take into account, including the mood you are in when viewing something. Something you found unfunny one day could be hilarious on another and vice versa.
It's because funny is a function of the present, atmosphere it's not funny because it's smart or relevant, humor always move on because it was never deep or relevant, it was always filler and meant to brainwash people.
>I fr*cking love science!!! humor
so it's pretty much the big bang theory for boomers
the big bang theory's audience is primarily boomers... do you actually think millenials watch network tv?
>actually think millennials watch network tv
A decent chunk of them watch cable news for some fricking reason
>A decent chunk of them watch cable news
twitter isnt real life.
next-level comic timing is what got me into it
Mostly character-driven stuff: Fry being a dumbass, Farnsworth being a senile jerk, etc. The sci-fi setting is a good excuse to write outlandish plots. Some of the references and sci-fi-specific jokes are too Spaceballsy for me, but the good stuff is too good to pay much attention to that.
Back when people actually watched TV the original run used to air all the time. It was kind of ubiquitous during my late childhood/adolescence. Rewatched it and it was really funny, haven't seen any of the spinoff movies or the new episodes which are probably shitty
no u
The voice acting
it's good because it follows the classic adventure plot every episode and gives each character fair screentime, with fry still being the 'main' character
doesn't rely on moronic or overly crude humor
creators who actually gave a frick
interesting theme / concept and not just generic family show
didn't go full moron south park or simpsons mode and end up with 200 seasons
>doesn't rely on moronic or overly crude humor
A lot of the jokes will break established rules about character personalities or how things have been shown to previously work just to make a quick joke. Characters will act smart or moronic for plot convenience like a lot of shitty sitcoms.
The concept is interesting but it's often underutilized. Half of the plots and jokes are
>normal thing BUT IN THE FUTURE
which can be funny but they abuse this so much. The show unironically dates itself heavily with how much it leans into pop culture. The episode about Lucy Liu and napster always comes to mind
it's not funny, don't @ me
just shut up
futurama has no real jokes
What the frick are you talking about
based and true all the jokes boil down to
as in "THING YOU KNOW BUT REFERENCED WITH MATH ISNT THAT HECKIN HILARIOUS!!!"
it's funny because the moment futurama started, simpsons declined.
Without citing any Futurama jokes as examples, your question isn't "what makes Futurama funny" but "what makes funny things funny?"
Jokes can work several different ways. They can subvert expectations, they can be references to other media, they can be a running joke that pertains to an individual character, or they can just be absurd.
Futurama was never funny, it was just kind of comfy to watch.
only the space episodes.
Did Futurama ever have a Sneed moment?
Bender getting rust around his mouth when he's sober made me laugh
Its mean spirited and most jokes are just too funny, the sci fi setting also allows for much wilder episodes and situations
Still absolutely piss myself at this one.
Witty writing combined with silly subversive gags like
i don't think it's even given me hearty chuckles
I don't get why shit like family guy gets shit on but people can say they like futurma with full honesty and no one points out they're morons. family guy sucks but futuramas humor literally isn't any better, it just pretends to be clever
>Simpsons, Family Guy, etc
>Set in the 21st century
>Can't focus on the wacky adventures because of the existential threat of Black folk causing the end of human civilization and it all has been for nothing
>Based Futurama
>Set in the 31st century
>Human civilization still exists and is thriving almost a millennia after we have passed away
>Can just focus on the wacky space adventures
>Why is Futurama funny? What about it makes you giggle?
>And you have to give an explanation, no direct quoting or posting of scenes.
>I'm asking because I think it's more interesting to see people to explain why it's funny rather than argue with people who think it's unfunny with shitflinging with no real substantial argument on either sides
Hermes, Farnsworth, Fry, the donbot, sometimes zoidberg are all funny.
