Why is it that the longer I look at the designs of the cast of this show, the more off-putting they seem? They're all so one-note, so... pandery and indulgent I guess? It's like every single one of these designs just screams "I am an X character archetype!!!" It's like they're all two-dimensional caricatures with nothing more to them aside from their archetype's basic appeal.

"Look, I am a neurotic shy girl! Every single aspect of me is neurotic and shy! And I am a tumblr sexyman butthole! Every single aspect of me is defined by what tumblr sexyman buttholes do! And I am a sad out-there girl, every aspect of me is defined by being sad and weird", etc. You get the idea.

Even though this is an indie project, these characters unironically look like they were designed by a committee who studied the tastes of twitter/tumblr zoomers and decided to max out on appealing to them.

The longer you listen to a single note in a piece of music the more boring that 1 note will seem.

Archetypes are archetypes because they resonate with people. Is Darth Vader a bad villain design because he's too dark, tall, and menacing? Is Aslan a bad character design because lions are commanding? Is Superman a bad design because his bright primary colors too obviously connote a strong sense of justice and heroism? A sufficiently cynical person could say that the Gospels are dull unoriginal pandering because they have too many characters relatable to the average doubting Roman and recycle older mythic motifs. The originality of a work's symbols is not the measure of its value.

People compare ADC with stuff like Undertale, but I can actually look at Undertale designs without getting irritated from how one-note they look because they're more subdued and balanced. A design can be expressive but not to the point where everything about them only expresses a single emotion. This old picture visualizing flanderization is a good example, except ADC is as if everyone started out at phase 4.

We'll see how it goes along. The season's supposedly planning to do a deep dive on every character. So far we know Jax will be an irredeemable piece of crap, but even he will have different color stripes of crap.

There are things I can look at for a long time without getting bored. This show's designs are not among those things.

ADC is probably the first major IP to be brazenly opaque about its subcultural underpinnings. This seems like a cynical conceit at first but is deceptively noble, as each of the cast metaphysically connects to certain archetypes of Web 2.0 post-vaporwave Internet aesthetics in ways that appeal to both children and adults, 'terminally online' or not. The fact that Jax is immediately classified as a Tumblr sexyman; Kinger remains a constant even among those who hate the series; and Zooble synthesizes 90s iconography into an anthropomorphized Dada sculputre, all add to the feeling that this series openly embraces that it is the result of tropes caving in on themselves. The fandom for ADC is unique in that it is the opposite of a containment zone, it is an open air market for meshing the characters not just with each other but other properties. This is best illustrated by having Pomni walk through a non-Euclidean, Backrooms-type setting, which her colorful and symmetrical design diametrically opposes.

The irritation you feel is a result of their not needing substantial characterization to communicate which ideals they originate from.

    >when the archetypes archetype

They aren't bad in itself. TF2 characters are very much designed in a way where you get the gist of what they are. Ex. Scout is skinny fast dude who runs his mouth and Heavy is big guy who's slow but can take and give a punch.

I'll give that they seem one note so far but it's only been one episode so they have to set the premise and introduce everyone before they delve into anything too deep or else they risk detracting normies.

Or, they could have, you know, introduced a couple of characters, like 3, and focused on them for this pilot episode and not mixed three different plots together.

They could have trimmed the fat out and had a 15 minute episode focusing on the new arrival of Pomni and her dealing with discovering the actual environment, and not finding a fricking exit that exists outside the main setting of the show. But they are a piss poor writers and decided to do... Not 1. Not 2. But 3 plots that all mashed together and ended with zero resolution.

All of them are just facsimiles of real humans who were browbeaten into fitting the mold of a children's game.

You remind me of a MDgay I saw last week who claimed that robots behaving like common teenage media archetypes is brilliant because it's robots trying to imitate human dynamics even though nothing in the show explicitly suggests that. I told him it was a reach and I will tell you yours is a reach as well, these character archetypes are meant to be taken at face value.

I bet if you even tried to "fix" them it'd look like shit. You gays get "zoomer vibes" stuck in your head then see problems that aren't even there. These designs are top tier. They're all vastly different from each other yet clearly look like they're from the same show, not to mention are cute and creative as hell.

This unironically. Don't like it? At least SUGGEST what you'd do better. Saying "I don't like it because it's bad!" Is boring and useless.
