it is one of the few movies that actually does benefit a lot from being in a large immersive theatre over someone’s living room tv or their laptop. It’s built for that large experience, and seeing it in a theatre is actually a draw over just seeing it.

The artstyle would be fine if they weren't trying for a boring, emotional "triumphant" space story for the umpteenth time. Buzz Lightyear was supposed to be an action hero, a children's icon who went on adventures against evil emperors. Not a "first man to the moon" story while "ROCKETMAN" plods along somberly in the background.

It was the most corporate production Pixar has made in years:
    >MCU super-star as the main character
    >"gritty" (not actually) reboot of a beloved character/franchise
    >Toy cat character that is there purely for merchandising/being the cutesy mascot
    >"Muh lesbians" that is Korra-tier unimportant because they can't even commit to showing it out of fear of losing foreign markets (they lost some anyway)
    >Soulless side characters that are essentially just living archetypes
    >Ignores previously established canon, not just from Star Command (that's semi-reasonable) but also from the Toy Story movies themselves
    >Inserts itself as the "true" Buzz Lightyear, despite not matching even the aesthetic of Andy's toy--let alone the "Silver Age, Space Age, Sci-fi" vibe that Buzz was inspired by.

All that in mind, I truly wonder how it could do so poorly.

      >"Muh lesbians" that is Korra-tier unimportant because they can't even commit to showing it out of fear of losing foreign markets (they lost some anyway)
I've got a few questions aboout this honestly: what year does the movie some out in universe i.e when Andy first sees it? mid 90s right?
At risk of being that one autismode: its really funny to imagine a company putting out a children's film in the mid 90s with an onscreen same sex kiss, and speaking of Korra, remember how she didn't get an onscreen kiss, or the two gay cops in Gravity falls? and it took to what, 2018, to finally see Bubbline hook up properly?
and that's only in an american context. Did you know in England it would have actually ILLEGAL to air this movie unedited (and would have been until 2003)?

They'd probably justify it like, "This is a world where toys come to life when you're not looking and people still haven't noticed. A lesbian couple being treated as ordinary in a 90s movie is nothing in comparison, so stop being homophobic racists and let's all get along."

        Anonymous

Why are you defending a million dollar corp? What's in it for a shill like you. The movie obviously isn't from the 90s nor does it pretend to be. If anything, it's a reboot of a 90s movie and would be as progressive with homosexual characters as any superhero tv show today. Your favorite big coop can't do that can they? They can't even be bothered to pander to you

People will argue lesbians or black people or whatever but in reality it's because literally nobody fricking asked for a "serious" (by that I mean more serious than Toy Story) adaptation of fricking Buzz Lightyear. There is simply no audience for this at all. It would be the equivalent of "let's make a western style film about Woody". Nobody would care.

Profit is a profit unless you have ridiculous expectations. Probably not enough of one to warrant a sequel but enough to say they didnt fail.

it flops. As a general rule, it costs as much to market as it is to produce. If production costs 49, marketing costs 49. This means the movie makes 20 million before distribution cost is accounted for. A flop no matter which way you cut it.

      They should have done Rex

It should have been an anthology film (or a short series released direct to Disney plus)
Each segment (or episode) could be about a different Toy Story toy in their element. A sci-fi segment with Buzz and Zurg, a western segment with Woody and the Roundup Gang, a dinosaur segment with Rex and Trixie, etc.
Do it cutesie and fun and old-fashioned. Maybe have a different style for each one. The Lightyear segment would be some googie jetsons spaceman spiff segment. The woody one could look like old Wild West shows, gun smoke and the lone ranger, etc. The Rex one could be done in 2D animation, styled after those illustrations you see in old kids books about paleontology. You could do a Little Bo Peep section as a cutesy puppetry thing in style as an old Rankin Bass Cartoon, with a twinkly old Disney soundtrack and celestas
If you want to do Toy Story but not toys, that’s how you do it

yes there is, people always loved star command even if it wasnt very good but people have good memories atbout that show, yet they wasted absolutely everything that people liked about it and made the actual thing as boring as possible, it seems theyre trying to be a animated interstellar or some shit when they forgot they make movies for kids, it should have been more lightheardted space adventures

I agree with your post but the idea of a western starring a more realistic Woody and his gang sounds kinda awesome.

But only because westerns are timeless and sci-fi is totally oversaturated right now.

The countryside flashbacks, opening sequences, old jolly cane using toy villain twist, said villain feeling abandoned and unloved, the fates of said villains, the promise of being loved by kids for generations, the delusional Buzz being used for a third time, it all seems like a rehash to me. There are obviously other story beats that are originl, but half of TS3 is just TS2 all over again.

This is what you idiots get for not putting a price tag on every aspect of the show.
Want the voice actors to do unique lines for you? Pay.
Want specifics gif animations to match your autistic music video? pay
    Want songs? pay extra
    Want concept art? pay
    Want animatics? pay
    Want previews of episodes? pay
    Want bloopers? pay
Want the drafts, scripts, emails , audio writers' meetings between the executives? pay
Want the source files to be able to mess around with the animation? pay up the ass.

Animation pricing is even more mentally handicapped than video games. Spending 50-150 million dollars just to pay once for a 60$ ticket. In TV Show's case you pay nothing.

We had a good amount of em when I was a kid--we didn't get a DVD player until 2005 or 06, I think. Going to the VHS store in another town was a magical experience because it was the only time I got to reliably watch episodes of Pokemon I hadn't seen before.

    >parents stop taking kids to theaters
    It's really that simple.

Honestly this is probably accurate. Disney's name is mud right now. The public is furious about all the groomer shit happening right now and are showing up to protest drag queen storytime at libraries (why they ever thought they could get that under the radar, God only knows why). Disney+ is already losing subscribers and park attendance is reportedly down this summer, which is only made worse by the economic recession pricing families out of the parks.

If you're a middle class family who is tightening the belt and you see Disney's CEO in front of a camera saying he's going to use the company to defend child grooming in schools, it makes it some of your spending cuts a lot easier to choose. Free streaming services + ads instead of Disney+, camping instead of the Disney World trip, and watching wholesome old DVDs instead of going to see whatever Disney's newest movie is.

Doesn't really matter to Disney, they're basically at a point where they can say whatever they want and still be in the black. They're a titan that doesn't have any fear of falling over.

Best case scenario, they spun Marvel off into its own company and sell Lucasfilm.

              Anonymous

Disney sold Saban / Power Rangers when its popularity dipped, so really who knows. I can't really see Disney ditching Marvel other than maybe closing the comics division and licensing out the publishing rights, because that investment paid for itself several times over by now, but Lucasfilm is basically never going to pay for itself because Disney so horribly mismanaged the Star Wars IP. Brainlets like to just add up the box office grosses for all the Disney Star Wars movies and act like that's a slam dunk but don't consider all of the theaters' cuts, marketing and budgets that need to be subtracted, and quite possibly the most overlooked aspect, interest. If you account for the interest return that Disney's investors were expecting from buying Lucasfilm, that $4 billion they bought Star Wars for is basically never going to come back.

Disney was promising their investors that Star Wars would be like Marvel and bring in billions of dollars a year from having at least one movie release every year. It was supposed to be a repeat of Marvel's success, and the investors believed them. Now Disney has pretty much given up on making Star Wars movies and they've switched over to saying "oh, believe us, all the money is in streaming now, we're gonna make 10 new Star Wars TV shows and over the lifetime of Disney+ they will make all the money we promised that the movies would make. And we have some hotel thing."

Disney is very possessive of their toys so I don't really expect them to sell Star Wars off, but probably no-one expected them to sell Power Rangers either. If Disney gets desperate enough for a cash infusion and they've already run Star Wars into the dirt, they very well could cut Lucasfilm loose if it's not pulling its weight.

                Anonymous

They sold Power Rangers because they never controlled it completely due to the ties to the Sentai IP. I doubt they'd do that with something like Star Wars.

Whether they recoup the investment or not anyway, they kind of need brands for streaming too.

Disney didn't specifically buy Power Rangers. They bought Fox Family Worldwide, which was co-owned by Saban Entertainment, thus inheriting ownership rights of Power Rangers. Content library and rights were a bonus, the real reason Disney wanted Fox Family was for their operating infrastructure and MLB rights.

Space sci-fi is amazing when done right. The reason we have so much space sci-fi is because it's our manifest destiny to explore the stars and other planets. It truly is the final frontier, and it's in our DNA to regail ourselves with incredible tails of people go go there.

Too bad Lightyear is none of that. It's 60s B-movie slop warmed over with $200 million worth of current year paint. It's like Disney and Pixar did an exhaustive research project to find the perfect formula of a hypothetical person who is nobody, and made a movie for that person.

Pixar is a joke now. They left all the rejects while the smart people either have left, retired, or fricking died. They'll merge it with Walt Disney Animation and I'm sure they'll have a renaissance in like 30 years but their legacy is over. Has been since like Inside Out.

The last Pixar movie I loved was Coco. It was something very different from Pixar and I saw it not long after my grandfather died, so I felt quite touched by it. It's shit because they turned a literal joke into a "serious" film. Toy Story is a comedy film premise. Buzz is a toy that thinks he's an action hero, and when he says bizarre in-character stuff to Woody (the straight man), it's funny. The viewer's imagination fills in the blanks of Buzz's "backstory", and this works in favor to the main film plot (ie, they're all just toys), without getting in the way too much. Buzz having a karate-chop or rambling about secret missions is a million times funnier and more entertaining, because it's out-of-context and hilarious (especially when paired with how cynical Woody is in TS1). I'm not 100% sure if the people making this film get the point of Buzz or Toy Story.

I'm not completely against the idea of there being a Buzz film (the intro to Toy Story 2 was fun as a little special), but I honestly can't imagine why anyone would want to see a "serious" Buzz (he's a parody of Star Wars and 90s toys).

Without reading through the rest of this thread and only watching the trailers, I'll put in my 2 cents.

    It looks boring.
The visuals aren't particularly interesting. Honestly it looks like a generic sci-fi movie that they slapped buzz lightyear into just to get a recognizable name attached to it.
Maybe kids might like it but again, I have to bring up the visuals just look uninteresting. At least from the trailers, how exactly are they grabbing kids attention?
Another things thats more of a nitpick from my own habits but watching the trailer, I can't really tell what the plot of the movie is. Is it just an adventure movie? Fight some aliens, "save the day", roll credits?
Some trailers have a bad habit of just spoiling the whole movie in them but this trailer just sorta left nothing in my mind after watching it. I was just sitting there thinking "yep, thats a movie thats currently out". Nothing "hooked" me enough to be interested in going to see it.

You guys aren't lying about the gay kiss and Zurg being Buzz, are you? I'm slowly realizing it's not a joke and reality is this horrible.

I wish it wasn't true. My kid is going to want to watch this and I'm going to have to explain that gay people are homosexuals and why that's not okay. Looking forward to it but still shouldn't have to have that talk yet.

Sorry Anon, but if you can imagine literally anything you used to enjoy, cartoons, vidya, normal live action movies, toys, literally ANY of your culture, it's going to be recycled back to you in a stripped down, corporatized, soulless package slapped with [current activist trend] so that if you voice any concerns about how bad it is the worshippers of [BRAND] can attack your criticism and bury it with accusations of you being an immoral person for criticizing their new secular religion.
      Enjoy!

If someone told me a few years ago that a Paramount created Sonic movie would outclass a Disney Pixar movie, from the popular Toy Story franchise no less, I would have called them crazy. But, here we are.

Lightyear would’ve done a lot better had they just followed the Sonic’ route and simply had Keke Palmer as a love interest for diversity instead of forcing a lesbian sidekick.

there goes "pixar cant be seriously toned" or "pixar cant be expressively wacky" within the span of a single FRICKING YEAR.
dreamworks, sony, wb, and netflix is about to clean sweep for the next decade while toy story 6 and whatever classic franchise they deem needs a 2nd or 3rd movie. inside out 2, give more random ideas and concepts a soul: the movie.
more princess shit from disney's aspect frozen 3: heating of hearts. more capeshit that wont hold a candle to what sony has done with their own property. all that while getting rewards out the ass and the highest of ratings for the same shit shit they have been doing for 2 decades now.

So they're saying that this movie is the movie that child Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy... does that mean Toy Story 1 was set in 2022, or that the Toy Story universe had super advanced CGI technology for movies back in 1995?

People will blame the gays, and people will blame the art style, and people will blame the plot, but the real reason is a lack of brand recognition.

This Buzz is just too different from the one people know and love. People don't want their favorite properties reimagined, They want them to stay the same forever.
There are rape exceptions, but by and large, people don't want stuff they like to be reimagined.

    1. It's about fifteen years too late as a concept.
    2. Animation hasn't been doing that great at the box office this year. Sure, The Bad Guys and Sing 2 are number 10 and number 11 on the year but Sing 2 only made two thirds what the first one did and The Bad Guys won;t even make as much domestically as ANTZ did almost twenty-five years agp .
    3. It's in a really weird place where it's dependent on its status as a franchise film but doesn't look like it should be part of that franchise. It'd be like a Star Wars film that looks like a Bollywood musical; you're not going to really pull in fans who like the series but people who are tired of Star Wars in general won't have any interest in it either.
    4. It has some of the fiercest box office competition in years. Disney couldn't have picked a worse time to release it especially since family films in general haven't really been doing that great at the box office since most parents would rather stream a movie instead of taking their kids to a theater.

Bad word of mouth and poor marketing. The consensus seems to be that despite being visually impressive, the story and characters are weak and the movie moves in such a way that it's hard to come to know or really like any of them. And the twist about Zurg is either a hit or miss.
