I liked the start but it devolved into a formulaic character drama
it had this sense of dread which i liked, and it wasn't like any drama i have ever seen, the interactions felt so real
This is one of the most wrong opinions I've ever read. In the first season the show was trying too much to fit into Breaking Bad/Mad Men prestige TV mold. You kind of imagine it was pitched as Walter White and Don Draper clones in the same show set in the 80s, but after the first season they let the character relationships lead the way and the show really started to blossom.
The problem is that almost all the characters are very unlikeable.
They have their rough edges but they mellow out with time, that's part of what the show is about.

Watching the engineer dude's marriage fall apart was tedious and utterly predictable. Watching the girl sperg out, lash out and people, and cry about shit was also boring. The badboy rich dude was sort of fun to watch but his story is entirely generic.
I watched it for a bit but couldn't stand the male-like female character that invented literally everything computer-related.
It was really good, but it did finish airing almost 5 years ago so it's not surprising people don't talk about it much anymore. For All Mankind has similar vibes if you're looking for a new show.

I watched the first episode and it seemed like a bunch of nerds who thought they were really cool. Silicon Valley was better and also more believable. This was some nerd escapist fantasy horseshit.

I'm replaying that first episode in my head now and remembering that yeah, this show was really bad.
If I watched it again I would fast forward through all the women speaking parts. The actresses on the show were terrible compared to the male actors.
I got up to the part where Mackenzie Davis started crying about the computer's "soul" after making the OS some shitty if-then-else conversation tree thing and couldn't stomach it any more.
We get it, women did computers in the old days too. I don't actually care.

The first season is extremely good. Season two was still good but less so. Then it went woke and started focusing on the female characters too much and became a trainwreck.
