why is the coloring so much worse in 2020 animaniacs? Like that's really the biggest issue aside from some other animation/posing stuff. It can't just be cel vs digital animation

yeah, it's not digital colouring that's the problem, it's the colour choices they made
Digital coloring has a more saturated look which shouldn't exist with even basic post processing

That's a huge factor to why the reboot looks worse though. Having the characters animated with perfect digital lines gets rid of all the charm you would see from completely hand painted cels

even if you don't notice minor details your brain does, and it can tell something is wrong from just the slightest details missing. Perfect lines are the uncanny valley of animation

The shading is hand painted. The lower saturation, brightness, and aberration are part of an action script for batch processing.

CMYK on computer is a simulation of how things would look once printed. Everything is still RGB under the hood.
2020 just has lower budget overall and it shows. 2020 has both uniform line length and flat colors.

the lighting, shading, and motion, all these aren't present at all in the 2020 Huluanimaniacs.
not to mention their refusal to make anyone look reasonably appealing or god forbid, attractive in the eyes of yakko and wakko, or even dot as well! nah, they ALL have to have butterfaces, sharp pointy noses, jagged teeth, eta. if they show any lick of voluptuous features or jiggle physics.

the people animating this are fricking lazy, or under crunch time, resulting in cutting corners, keep things hyper bright despite certain scenes being warranted for characters to bend lighting/shading. are fully into the beliefs of "MUH PATRIARCHY" and believe having the warner brothers being physically attracted to beautiful women for the sake of comedy is "MUHSOGGYKNEES!" even though Dot did it too with attractive males (hell, other characters as well!) so the only solution was to make everyone look like they came straight out of the big book of British smiles from the Simpsons, Albeit it still backfired and artist draw them anyways, but it's still polishing a turd at this point.
