How did they make a live action video game movie that isn't screaming garbage and dare I say even enjoyable at moments?

      Anonymous

Because the people in-charge actually gave a shit about Sonic. Nobody who did any of the other videogame movies (barring maybe Detective Pikachu) actually cared about the properties they were adapting.

The fact that they changed it tells you that someone cared. Most other production teams would just b***h about fans being toxic or ungrateful.

They keep the focus on Sonic, so he doesn’t feel shoved in or forced. He gets to have character without becoming unbearable, because ultimately he’s there to help Sonic grow. Also Marsden does a great job with it and clearly gives it effort.

Because unlike most video game movies, the staff live the games enough that they don’t want to reinvent the wheel, but simply bring it to movie form. The entire crew clearly wanted this to be good, and they don’t let their egos overtake the product.

The director of the movie worked on the Shadow The Hedgehogs cutscenes, an while that doesn't make you an immediate expert on Sonic, I think he understood exactly how much focus Sonic should have in a Sonic.
For one thing, he was not brought in from the videos games to our world. He exists in the game universe as the humans.

I didn’t care for the second one and thought it was pretty weak in parts, the human world storyline mostly. I wished they would have it all cgi or mixed with just robotnix and maybe a kid if they want an audience stand in.

But I did like seeing their team up. I would pay to see more or that and stupid fights with robotnix than Oregon.

It's mostly because there wasn't a lot of focus given to Bernadette and Jules, they were just kind of...there. Admittedly, there were a ton of wholesome moments so it was worth it, but still. There's also Aleena but Underground quite literally only leads to shitposting, mentioning how the show is bad (because it was) or bringing up Tamers, so that's a bust.

      Also this

Why is the Donut Dad so based?

I don't like how they made Sonic another "CGI animal in da real world" movie. Not that I'm against humans being in the setting but I'd prefer if the setting was more fantastical. Eggman/GUN somewhat help but the rest of the world being generic real world is disappointing. Sonic's setting was at it's best when it was this weird blend of neon cyberpunk sci-fi entruding in a colorful hyperfanatasy version of nature.

Sega's constant push of trying to make Sonic realistic has always been stupid to me as far back as the first Adventure game. The franchise started out with this very unique blend of styles at times coming off as abstract and for over the past 2 decades they have had this weird idea that the best thing for Sonic is to be LESS unique. You see the culmination of this in Frontiers where they just straight up insert Sonic in a generic dark fantasy forest straight out of a stock Unreal Engine asset.

Longclaw is cool though. I like her.

          [...]
And to add on to this, they never bothered giving any proper worldbuilding to these worlds the same way Kirby did, and that's why they're not particularly what Sonic's known for. Not that it's a bad thing, since the Adventure games are some of the most beloved in the franchise. The franchise's consistency was never in its style, but its flair.

They did do worldbuilding. It's just that that worldbuilding was in Japan and US did what US did during those days (see all 4kids dubs or Power Rangers) and just made shit up to the point of near total rewrites, because frick the Japanese I guess.

I'm fully aware this and the OVA had Sonic in a realistic setting but at least with those they were small scale promotional material. Adventure was the first real big push of this concept and I always thought it was a bad route to go and I partially blame for what we have now with Frontiers.

Look at this generic fantasy crap lacking any form of identity. If 20 years ago someone told you this was a screenshot of a Sonic game would you believe them? Why is Sonic ashamed of looking like Sonic?

Sonic X works better for kids than the Sonic movies. Kids don’t want to deal with creepy Jim Carey or Sonic’s emotional issues. They want bright colors, fast battles and speed. Having a kid on Sonic’s team helps a child relate to the series better.
I enjoyed the first movie but it was made for children who grew up with the Sonic games, not made for children today.

        Anonymous

The Sonic movies work exponentially better for anyone above the age of 6. Every Sonic character goes through a satisfying journey and there's weight to their actions that kids find more believable than the same schtick happening every episode with characters who hardly ever evolve.

          Anonymous

I would say cartoons are meant to entertain and the movie doesn’t reach the same child audience, even for those 6 and up. I don’t think the kids are thinking about character arcs and how well the story is told. Maybe 13 and up but not elementary school kids. You’re able to note these things in the movie because you’re older.

So a Sonic movie needs to pander to the most simple of children in order to be good. As a kid I watched plenty of movies that had complex messages and was able to understand what they were telling the audience. Kids aren't as moronic as you seem to think they are.

                Really, boomer?

There’s a vast difference between 4-8 and 9-13 or so. Older children can follow messages like that just fine but you get kids will get bored.
Sonic is a colorful game with synth music and speed. Kids love to play the original because of easy access and charm. The movie should reflect that. How awesome would it be for a kid who played Sonic on their parent’s console to see actual green hills with the weird robot animals like [...] talked about.

                >ow awesome would it be for a kid who played Sonic on their parent’s console to see actual green hills with the weird robot animals
Again, kids aren't as moronic as you think they are. Also, green hill does appear in the first sonic movie. Watch movies before criticizing them.

Exactly, and that's why they made more money. Because you don't make multi-billion dollar blockbusters just appealing to dumb kids - you got to reel in their dumb parents too.

If it helps the kiddies, the sequel put in more explosion fluff, less slow exploration of character & a Bruno Mars dance number
