In case you somehow didn't notice, the west has completely abandoned romance in favour of hedonism and cynical materialism. I don't mean materialism in a muh capitalism sense before you start, but the rejection of anything abstract or less than 100% tangible. The current western ideal in relationshit is simply "have sex as soon as you hit puberty with the first person who lets you, then repeat as often as possible". Romantic relationships don't exist like this. Modern western culture has also erased all non-relationshit connotations to the word "romance".
