It's not really a cult classic, it's a mainstream classic that millions of people watch every year, like Casper. Hocus Pocus didn't make a big splash in theaters but it killed on home video

Disney always had a marathon of it running on Halloween when I was a kid and I enjoyed it. SJP awakened something in me in that flick way back when. Though I preferred Halloween Town or Don't Look Under The Bed.

I guess it's just one of those things where if you didn't watch it on cable as a kid in the 90s and 00s after trick or treating then you missed out. It's like A Christmas Story being a tradition on Christmas.

Because your parents decided to keep the moronic spawn they produced instead of giving it a proper sky burial.

I mean, it's not bad. It's just worn out, I used to watch it every Halloween season at least once. I just can't do it now because of the fans, the annoying memes, and just the fact that it's dated as shit. I'm not looking forward to 2, there doesn't even need to be a second Hocus Pokus movie.

It has high nostalgia value and is associated with a certain holiday, so people watch it at one time of the year in large numbers.

I was like 6 years old when this came out and I saw it in theaters. It freaked me out.

However it was very much considered a classic even shortly after. I remember by halloween 96/97 it was being spammed on TV and people treated it like a classic.

It may have been a cult classic in the early '00s but it's become a mainstream classic since the mid to late '00s, and the primary fans are now adults. Like Hook, if you grew up in the '90s and were allowed to watch movies at all, you have seen Hocus Pocus because of home VHS, rentals, and word of mouth from other kids. Hocus Pocus is the equivalent to the Home Alone movies for Halloween instead of Christmas.
But the main reason it had such wide appeal is because of its writing/plot/lore.
It's the prototypical Halloween plot done better than any other Halloween movie perhaps even to this day. Halloween movies, at least typical ones, are usually poignant and nostalgic and retrospective coming-of-age stories about kids ushered abruptly into adulthood through a night of unexpected danger/adversity/trauma (usually paranormal, which lends to the hazy nostalgic and mythical sense) that serves as rite of passage.
Adults are blind/numb to these things so they don't understand what makes these children's movies compelling.
If you look at other great Halloween movies they all follow this formula to some degree, The Halloween Tree, Casper, Monster House, Boys in the Trees (more niche). If Stand by Me was set on a Halloween night it'd make for a great Halloween movie.

Hocus Pocus' premise stands out because it's way more raw, not as childish, and doesn't hold back as much as the other movies. From the getgo you have one child cursed forever to be trapped in the form of a cat followed by a child murder (of his younger sister no less) and later you have other depictions of brutality like a man poisoned to death, his corpse defiled, then reanimated into eternal undead servitude. Great unforgivable injustices, even by adult standards, and it's implied by the plot that such trauma from past crimes lingers on and shapes the present, even though they seem long dead and buried. Basically Halloween movies are heavy shit, perhaps the heaviest shit, disguised as entertainment for kids.

he sequel will likely miss the point and be garbage though. It will be a revolving door of cameos and references without understanding or self awareness of why the original was great. I think I saw Thackery Binx in the trailer when he's meant to have been freed from the mortal coil and moved on into the afterlife with his sister after the first movie, same as Billy Butcherson, which would be cruel and unthinking plot revisions if they're brought back just for the sake of a cameo.
I was excited at first from the trailer but on reflection it might suck. But what do I know I'm just some chinese guy.

    >Why is this being pushed so hard as a cult classic
Because it is? People that grew up in the 90s have a great fondness for it, and thus it became a Halloween family staple. It's not very complicated, OP.

I don't want to say it's trannies because that's cliche but it really is trannies this time. No one ever gave a frick about this movie until the past year or two when they started "identifying" with it.
