Really, if everyone was so clever in the dunc universe, they would know that shields attract the works and drive them into a killing frenzy, so the fremen and other forces would revert to using conventional firearms or lasers

Is there a single instance of the shield working outside of that moronic exposition dump about their functionality in Part One? Hell, in Part Two during that stupid fricking assault on the Harkonnen harvester, the soldiers don't even have shields for some reason. Then the Thopter has a shield and it works once, but then it doesn't work the second time, because it read the script I guess.
Oh and lasers cut through shields without consequences and don't ask why. By the way, even though we just had like 45 minutes of Paul learning the desert way, how to survive and loot everything off of enemy combatants, down to their moisture, we're just going to blow up the harvester instead of looting it. Wait, why did we initiate a ground assault if we were going to blow it up anyway? Eh, frick it. Hey remember when the Baron gave his word not to hurt Paul or Jessica, but then his soldiers tried to cut through a door using a laser that could have easily bisected both subjects? Pretty unnecessarily risky move. Oh by the way Paul, your ancestors stored some nukes on Arrakis, but only your DNA can open the door. Nevermind that you're a halfbreed, or that we could just laser the door open, just stick your fingers in the box. Wait, why are you marrying Irulan again?
Goddamn I hate this movie so much it's unreal.

They initiated a ground assault because the ornithopter had a shield. If the lasgun came in contact at all with the shielded ornithopter it would have caused a nuclear explosion. They had to take that out first before they could blow up the harvester with the lasgun

also the ornithopter would have murdered them if they popped their head out in the open and shot their lasguns at the harvester

This is never established in the films.

How did they know the harvester didn't have a shield? Why didn't the ground soldiers have shields? Why didn't they loot the harvester? Why did the second RPG go through the Thopter's shield?

because anything on the ground with shields would cause worms to go in a frenzy, which means lower spice production

The Harvester itself attracts worms lol. Same answer applies to

            >How did they know the harvester didn't have a shield? Why didn't the ground soldiers have shields?
            Addressed in part one.
            >Why didn't they loot the harvester?
Would have taken too long, Hark back up would arrive soon.
            >Why did the second RPG go through the Thopter's shield?
Orni has to temporarily disable the shield in order to fire, so Paul distracted it, letting Chani fire a rocket. Shield came back online but rocket was just inside enough to continue.

yes, but the shield makes them go crazy which means even less spice production compared to just harvesting without a shield.

yes it was. In part 1, someone asks liet kynes why the harvesters arent shielded and she says because it causes the worms to go into a frenzy.

                Yes it is.
Part one Paul asks Liet Kynes why they don't use shields, to which she replies that it sends the worms into a killing frenzy (Attracts pretty much EVERY worm in the area).

Why not just do that? What's the point of nukes if you can achieve the same results with shield and laser?

yes, lets just shoot the thing in front of me and cause a nuclear explosion, killing me and my men and creating an irradiated zone on my beloved planet

              1. it causes a nuclear explosion on both ends
              2. you could easily explain that away as the laser loses power over longer distances, being less effective, although the book doesn't say as such

Now you're thinking like a Fremen. They actually do that in the book a couple of times. They set up shields in spots they now somebody is gonna laser, then boom, fried harkenen.

      >Part Two during that stupid fricking assault on the Harkonnen harvester, the soldiers don't even have shields for some reason
because it'd cause worms in the area to go into a frenzy, reducing the amount of time they have to harvest spice
      >Then the Thopter has a shield and it works once, but then it doesn't work the second time, because it read the script I guess.
timmy says to chani that she has to wait until the thopter shoots before she can shoot at it - thopter lowers its shield to shoot = opening for rocket
      >Oh and lasers cut through shields without consequences and don't ask why.
      that never happens
      > By the way, even though we just had like 45 minutes of Paul learning the desert way, how to survive and loot everything off of enemy combatants, down to their moisture, we're just going to blow up the harvester instead of looting it.
what would they loot off it?
      >Wait, why did we initiate a ground assault if we were going to blow it up anyway?
because the thopter would have killed them unless they destroyed it. the harvester provides good shielding against it.
      > Hey remember when the Baron gave his word not to hurt Paul or Jessica, but then his soldiers tried to cut through a door using a laser that could have easily bisected both subjects?
those were sardaukar, not his soldiers. the emperor wanted to clean up any loose ends (which means killing liet kynes)
      >Oh by the way Paul, your ancestors stored some nukes on Arrakis, but only your DNA can open the door. Nevermind that you're a halfbreed, or that we could just laser the door open, just stick your fingers in the box
his father put the nukes there. of course his father is gonna use his son's genetic code as access codes to it.
      >Wait, why are you marrying Irulan again?
to have a right to the throne. even though the great houses deny him at first, history will see that he has the right to the throne, and anyone neutral will also see that.

not the anon you are replying to, but I did find it incredibly stupid that they stored the nukes on Arrakes and not their home planet and somehow constructed that whole vault without the freman noticing, at least it could have been set up earlier instead of having it come from Paul just coincidentally running into Josh Brolin

If blades are the only thing that penetrates the shield, why dont they just shoot blades at them?

IIRC it's about the speed or some shit. So of you swing really fast, the shield detects it. It's moronic, and inconsistent.

Ostensibly works like impact armor. Harder/faster strike = more deflection. Slow, murderous torque = slip right in.

The movie does a really bad job communicating the problem with shields and guns. Giving a soldier a lasgun is the equivalent of giving them nuclear launch codes, since if they shoot at anything shielded, it'd cause a nuclear explosion. So almost no one carries lasguns except soldiers who are highly trusted (like royal guards). Harkonnen foot soldiers should not have lasguns, and fremen really should not have them. If anyone has a lasgun, then the rest of the troop should not have shields.
