Not really, he wasn't able to get the one thing which he actually wanted, which was to be respected on the street like Avon was. He wasn't motivated by money at all, and you can see how unhappy he is with the suits at the end. Gaining respect was his only motivation throughout the whole show, and in the epilogue you can see the two gangsters mythologizing Omar, and they had no idea who Marlo was. The other implication was that Marlo would be back in prison soon (since the DA tells him that if he does any more crime after their deal, they'll bring all the other charges back)
The whole point of Marlo is that he’s a sociopathic adrenaline junkie who’s just in it for the mayhem. He doesn’t have the ambitions of going legit and leaving the game that Boomer dealers like Avon and Stringer Bell had.
Avon never wanted to leave the game, he was a soldier till the end and he respected Marlo for it. Stringer was the one bleeding green. Marlo most of all sought out respect and the game was the easiest way for him to exercise control and get that respect by being a ruthless sociopath. That's why when he tries to make the switch from kingpin to businessman, we see how he still crave the streets. Most likely he got milked by the israelite lawyer and went back again to the streets.
a theme of the show is that every generation it gets worse. avon comes under pressure from marlo who is more ruthless and in the future its gonna be someone like kenard going even further. kenard being the like 12 year old kid who kills omar. same with cutty who comes back from long jailtime and cant recognize the game anymore.
the drug game is a competition that optimizes for the capacity for violence, so slowly shit like the "rules of the game" and the weird honor the old timers have gets left behind. the reward is the money and the power.
Good question, since Marlo only succeeds by luck or writers fiat. I will say, I don't think Marlo gets much praise, it's more the characters and actors around him.
The later seasons of The Wire suffered because all the best characters got killed off and their replacements were a pale imitation. Marlo's crew had plot armor until the final few episodes when they all suddenly get arrested because the writers needed to wrap everything up.
It just tried to tie up so many things, tried to draw parallels between some of the older characters with some of the younger ones. The characters of Jimmy and Lester being completely assassinated. The newspaper angle wasn't really hitting since it was just a means to throw sociocultural and political commentary. The whole serial killer plot. The only thing good about that season was Omar being capped and Bubbles' redemption.

There are a number of things I dislike about season 5 (primarily the newspaper plot, but also some of McNulty's decisions), but it does also have some of the best moments in the entire show, and some great payoffs for certain characters. It's worth watching if you liked the previous seasons.
You want it to be one way.
do it or dont, i got places to be
op likes his villains multi dimensional
*GASPS* Just like Thanos!!!
You ready to bet your future on that?
Shit thread. And one more thing, price of the brick going up.
he basically won in the end

>ends his run rich, healthy and free
>but he didn't get every single thing he wanted
He doesn't care about that shit. Did you even watch the show?
No he didn't. His name doesn't ring out like Omar's or Avon's. That's all he wanted.
>Marlo

I likes it simple.

MAH NAME IS MAH NAME
Because true power and ruthlessness is boring and one dimensional.

He's a pretty good embodiment of the broken system he's a villain of. I like how he's described as having cat's eyes. I like Chris more tho
> begin watching season 5
> turn it off 30 minutes in because the writing is so bad.
What went wrong?
it is the worst season, but honestly its not that bad. still better than most TV out there
>What went wrong?
