Why the frick is modern Joker so edgy?

Why the frick is modern Joker so edgy? I grew up with the animated series and the reason why I found the Joker so effective there was that he would turn from a michevious troll to a genuinely dangerous guy on a dime and you never really knew where you had him and as far as I know that's what he used to be like in the comics too. Seems like modern Batman comics have to one up how edgy and crazy the Joker is where he is just absurdly torturing people and cutting of his own face and shit, barely even playing pranks anymore. Doesn't help that movie adaptations just turn him onto chaos guy because everyone just wants to clone the Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight gets an unfair share of blame, it’s copying comics that did the same thing earlier

he was always edgy. His crimes just used to by jokier and more clownish

Dark Knight Returns, killing Jason Todd, Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum:A serious house on a serious earth etc, post crisis Joker always had an edgy streak like a lot of Batman Villians

It only becomes an issue if your only exposure to Joker is a top 10 Batman comics list, which is true for a lot of writers who can make the mistake of making pale imitations of the earlier stuff

Joker wasn’t “dangerous” or “threatening” at all in btas. He never even killed a single person. If your only exposure to the setting is fricking btas you’d never have even guessed he’s supposed to be the archenemy.
Joker’s been killing since his debut, btw

BTAS Joker was carried by charisma enough to stand out as an archnemesis.
And if we're allowed to add Mask of Phantasm to the equation, Joker definitely killed people.

he killed the guy he thought killed batman, no? Lowered his coffin in the acid vat?

BTAS was very much a mix between pre- and post- crisis Batman, and the bulk of it really comes from the Bronze Age. Like, Batman comics in the 1970s. Hell, Jokers Millions is an adaptation of a comic from the year 1952
This is what trips a lot of people up. You watch BTAS, and then you read the Batman comics from around the same time, and get confused when you see how different they are.

he did start killing during the superman crossover, the new adventures and probably in JL, but I haven't watched justice league in a long time. He might have also killed or have implied to have killed people in mask of the phantasm. Vaguely remember him being a hit man or mob muscle before becoming the joker in that. And he did plan to nuke gathom in a later episode of btas.

As a funny aside, a lot of fans use this shift in body count to explain the change in Bruce from btas to JL and then Batman beyond. He became obsessed with the role of batman after the villains started killing 100s if not thousands and meeting the JL and super powered aliens like superman.

Writers feeling the need to one up each other. They can't create, so they just do [same thing, but more intense].

Morrison was doing this the same year while Joker was hamming it up Michael Keaton's Batman, Nolan's chaos Joker was not even that radically edgy a departure from some portrayals of Joker outside of his scars

It's because we chortled at Joker's Boner too much so he's now gone off at the deepend.

Even the DCAU toyed with the Joker being especially crazy and torturing a kid etc, the clown aesthetic just invites sinister approaches

      >there's no more goofy main villains because.......every villain must be extremely serious and unfunny!
it happened to riddler, it happened to HQ and it happened to fricking joker. Why cant we get any goofy main villains anymore? Joker already taught those people how to write one so why did they stop?

        >Why cant we get any goofy main villains anymore?
You can, you just make them so overly edgy that they can't be taken seriously anymore. like Art The Clown in the All Hallow's Eve/Terrifier films

    >Why the frick is modern Joker so edgy?

Probably to compete with Spawn and Carnage/Venom whom were really popular in the 90s and early 2000s. Everything was about edge and extreme back then. And a lot of the fans of those years are still hanging around or working at DC.

I guess also, like with the tim burton batmans, some people were specifically fans of the grotesque parts like the surgeon working on joker or the penguin dying.

No idea when DC will figure out that isn't what everyone wants. I mean, Mark Hamill's joker and the one from the adam west batman are the lion's share of how the public sees the joker. No idea why they keep on with versions that most buyers dont care about

The best Batman/Joker dynamic mimics the Sherlock Holmes/Moriarty dynamic. Lean into Batman as a genius criminal investigator who has trained his body as well as his mind. Lean into the Joker as a desperately bored genius looking for his match who takes delight in playing games. It's timeless.

Absolutely don't give Joker a thesis to prove about society.

I was reading the man who laughs, which is a rewrite of Jokers first appearance (with some elements of The Killing Joke and Batman Year One added). One thing that sucked is, in the original, Joker kills rich people so he can steal their israeliteels. But I’m this rewrite, it’s all some statement on the rich and you got rich off of us and blah blah blah yawn

The only issue I have with it is that Joker is targeting them for turning him into the jokester with Ace chemicals. I suppose Brubaker wanted some more pathos in Joker's first appearance but he doesn't need it.
