Why were they so popular? What separated them from any other "Smart One/Dumb One" Duo?

I think Pinky and the Brain technically ran longer if you count the Animaniacs shorts.

Animaniacs failed overseas due to its overuse of American pop-culture references. Pinky and the Brain cut down on those and more had simple plots, which gave it a more universal appeal.

This was one of the few cartoons I watched as a kid that my mom liked. Thinking about it, the show had a more “adult” humor than other kids’ cartoons at the time.

It was to animaniacs what american dad is to family guy

The 90s were full of those wacky animal duos. Probably one of the worst trendsetters there was alongside Family Guy clones.

The writing was really smart and the mice would end up in unusual locations doing different things every episode. Plus the animation was good.

Because of the way the series would often play with the fact that Brain was too smart for his own good, and Pinky would always do a better job at getting people to follow him than Brain could
