She was a prostitute because she was. It was her nature. And you are correct, everything that happened did stem from the fact that she was a prostitute. That's what makes the story so mythic. There are zero pulled punches in terms of fundamental villainy and virtue.

The focus on fate leaves his whole motivations and the meaning of the movie up in the air. I'd prefer a story where he broke the rules and was punished for it, over one where he follows along like a good lapdog.

              >I'd prefer a story where he broke the rules and was punished for it, over one where he follows along like a good lapdog.
This is because you believe fulfilling your *own* destiny is somehow undermining of your personal agency. That is not the worldview of the characters in this film's universe. You have to embrace the concept of cosmic fate to immerse yourself in the story.

                Anonymous

It's boring watching a story where the whole thing is explained to you in the intro. If Amleth wasn't aware of his fate, it'd at least be vaguely interesting instead of purely going through the motions. Go have a nice day because god wills it lol, what's the point?

                Anonymous

You can know your destiny without being certain that you will achieve it. Rejection of fate occurs all the time in ancient mythology, and the consequences are always metaphysically destructive. Instead of rejecting it, he fulfilled and overcame it. The soothsayer prophesied that he would be forced to choose between vengeance and love, but because he was righteous and committed to his duty he ultimately attained both.

                >You can know your destiny without being certain that you will achieve it.
See, this is where we disagree. I think that if you know your fate and actively work towards it, you're guaranteed the win, which makes you a puppet.

He chose to interpret the "vengeance and love" line that way, but ultimately he chose vengeance, which was fated. There's no love in abandoning your family and just hoping they don't wind up getting abducted and turned into slaves again.

Honestly have not been so engrossed by a film with a completely predictable plot like this in quite a while. 15. 2 years ago

There is no Judeo-Christian good/evil dichotomy which renders the characters' motivations alien to a modern audience who aren't aware of the values and morals of Norse society

    >Amleth swears to avenge his father; filial piety is the cornerstone of every ancient society, and oath-swearing is the foundation of the pre-Christian social system

    >Uncle Fjölnir usurps Aurvandill as king but in doing so breaks the two most important sins of Norse society - he has slain his own kin by his own hand and has broken his oath to Aurvandill his liege by betraying him and attempting to kill Amleth. He is a man without honour and it is no wonder why his kingdom is taken from him by the King of Norway

    > Aurvandill is revealed to be a slaver and rapist and Amleth is the child of rape, for modern audiences it makes no sense why he still feels the need to carry out his oath when it is revealed that his father is really the "bad guy" by modern standards. Nevertheless he must still avenge his father, carry out his oath, take vengeance on his kin-slaying uncle even if the fantasy of reclaiming his kingdom, saving his mother and triumphing as the "good guy" is shattered.

    > Amleth realizes that he has children with Olga, instead of sailing off to live happily ever after, decides he must finally slay Fjölnir even after destroying his farm, slaying his children and his own treacherous mother. Why? Because Fjölnir may still have children yet who will carry on the blood-feud until either his line or Amleth's is wiped out. He must also set a standard for his future children that they must always avenge their kin regardless of the consequences. Amleth's "happily ever after" isn't living with his loving beautiful wife and children until old age, but snuffing out Fjölnir's line ensuring his own kin's future without blood-feud and his own resting place in Valhalla.

That's why my mind is blown when people ask stuff like
      >why did he abandon Olga at the end? what an idiot lol
His destiny (as explained by the witch after the village raid) were like orders from God, which is why they were more important than his family. He fulfils his destiny and then he reaches Valhalla.
It's actually a happy ending about true love for ones family (Amleth loving his father and even his mother before he finds out the truth) but I guess a lot of people missed the point because they don't understand there are different kinds of love and not just living the rest of your life on a farm with your wife like a coward.

  18. 2 years ago

It's because there's no traditional white male hero, average joe white people like unrealistic heroes more than complicated figures.

The Northman was a movie that made it hard to root for anyone.

Amleth was a revenge obsessed butcher, the entire point of him howling during that pillage scene was to show he wasn't a man, but a wolf
The little virtues he attempted to espouse, he tossed them all away when he left Olga on the boat.

With Aurvandill, as much as he was set up as a selfish villain in beginning, the entire movie then proceeded to show him as an honest man who'd rather live a modest living as a father and farmer than as a pillager, as his brother called it, "a disgraceful graybeard."
It also makes a point to show that the queen was actually the one who was constantly in his ear, telling him to do things contrary to his more gentle nature

For Amleth's mother, obviously the big reveal is that she was actually the one who brought ruin to his family with manipulation, adultery and conspiracy.
But it tried humanizing her evil behavior by showing that she was a pillaged princess, meant only to be a rape trophy for Amleth's father.
Her last line was thanking her son for murdering her, ending her pathetic life as a vindictive trophy prostitute.

There is no real hero in this story, there is just the belief that all those that die in combat are welcomed in Valhalla

can you believe that one critic complained that you need a phd in norse mythology just to understand this movie, which was based on the legend which Hamlet was based on? You're telling me that a movie critic doesn't know about Hamlet when my 15 year old little brother has read it and even knew the story was Hamlet-like.

      Anonymous

commenting on the idea that outside the hamlet shit, there seems to be more in the norse stuff. read: "maybe i'm not enjoying this because i don't know enough about norse mythology."

sadly its just an extremely bare bones hamlet remake.

        Anonymous

Even if you wrote Norse Mythology nothing in the movie needs in depth knowledge about it.
What, you need explanations for their motivations and morals stemming from the myths?
The names of places, I'd understand, but these are very common knowledge.
Plus the film makes it explicit at some points that it has fantasy in it so there's no need to overanalyze shit.

          Anonymous

you misunderstand. the movie is extremely anemic, leading one to think there is there some actual storytelling, possibly in the most unfamiliar elements. this is mistaken though. the movie is just stripped down hamlet, nothing more.

its actually not really good, just mediocre. i dont blame the normies. same with last duel, that one was also middle of the road tier where its not worth it putting more than one hour into it. and both feel very fake, where it doesnt convince me its a historical piece, it feels more like a stage play, especially the dialogue

To me it was pretty dull. I kept waiting for the moment it was gonna take a turn and get interesting or wild or something. Never happened. The fantasy element was purely visual and made no impact. I liked the end fight scene, but it was a slog to get there. Reminded me of Green Knight which was also bland and boring after these wild fantastical trailers. I wouldn't have minded so much if it had even less action. What action scenes it did have were nuanced and brutal and I liked that. At the end of it I just felt if someone told me in one sentence that "A boy watches his dad die by his uncles hand and he becomes a slave and then avenges his dads death by killing his uncle at a volcano." My reaction would be: "Ok". The reaction to the movie is the same...
