Why would Dr.

Why would Dr. Gero design Cell, after reaching his perfect form be able to vomit out the androids after being punched really hard and revert back to his weaker forms?

Why were the androids still whole even after being absorded and not dissolved for their parts?

because the Mangaka was making it up as he went along on a weekly schedule. Also the editors kept nudging him into making drastic story changes in order to introduce more marketable villains. That's why the arc begins with a gauntlet of antagonists and it's mainly why Cell has successive transformations, because Toriyama was quite literally redesigning him on the fly.

I had no idea how little Toriyama gave a shit until I started reading interviews of his. I think the most he contributed to Dragon Ball after the manga ended was drawing some concept art for whatever Toei was bugging him for. He didn't even remember drawing Broly's original design and never watched the movie either until the past few years

He originally wanted to end the series after the Frieza saga but it was popular so he kept it going. His editor kept wanting him to make changes which he obliged to which is why the story and lore becomes fricked afterwards. He was basically winging it at that point

            >He originally wanted to end the series after the Frieza saga but it was popular so he kept it going
Not true, he's never said anything to suggest that. And it wouldn't really be his style to end the series on such a downer note, not too mention there would have been a lot of loose ends like Gohans fighting potential and what would happen with vegeta around and no one to challenge him

              Anonymous

Doubtful Toriyama even knew when the manga would end at that time, since he was just drawing page after page and getting paid per page. Everything he planned, he did in the moment. Frieza was definitely meant to die, for example, since his face balloons into that puffy swollen face Toriyama always draws when someone is killed. Then in the next arc, Frieza just reappears. No real buildup, no anything, but that's how Toriyama wrote

At the end of Buu saga, he did say that he had wanted to end it for awhile, but doesn't elaborate at what point he wanted to stop. Might have been after Saiyaman, since the series feels like it truly dropped off a cliff by then and Saiyaman felt more like he was putting in effort then the later parts

This. 99% of the "worldbuilding" in Dragon Ball Z wasn't even from Toriyama but Toei, and when Toriyama actually did start worldbuilding for its own sake when he came back to working on it decades later, he magnificently fricked everything up. Just about nothing we "accepted" about DBZ's world is true anymore. I mean for frick's sake, you know the Saiyan race and how they were Frank Frazetta-style cavemonkeys who emerged from a war with the Tuffles and then got enslaved by Frieza? As of the Nu Broly movie, there's literally no canon evidence the Tuffles even exist in Dragon Ball and we have zero clue what Saiyan history was like because Toriyama retconned all of it.

I wonder why he brought #18 back, but didn't bring back #17. She didn't serve any purpose narratively, other than to just lay there. Cell could have ballooned himself and blew up without vomiting her up. I guess Toriyama hadn't drawn any women for awhile and he needed his fix

The 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai arc is the beginning of the best stretch of the story, which goes until the Freeza arc.

      >I liked adventure more, but it seemed at the time a road manga just wasn’t what people wanted.
      >Though I was reluctant to do it, the series’ popularity did indeed start to pick up around the Tenka’ichi Budōkai… And despite my reluctance, it still felt pretty good.

And after Freeza, he was pretty much phoning it in:

      >Interviewer: How did you feel as you were drawing the final portions of the series?
      >Toriyama: The Artificial Human and Cell story arc was pretty rough… I guess you could say I did all I could with Freeza, so I was burned out, and figured I couldn’t pull off a better battle than that. I thought, “Do I really have to keep going?” Even when Cell ended, it still didn’t feel like it could end. So before the Boo story arc began, I said “Once this next thing wraps up, I want to end it no matter what.” Because I thought there was no way for any stronger guys to pop up, or for Goku to get any stronger than he already was. So my starting point for the Boo arc was, “This is the end, so I’m going to draw whatever I want!” I always liked dumb gags, so I made things comical, with the Great Saiyaman and Gotenks and whatnot. It wasn’t until immediately before the final chapter that I thought up the ending. I needed something that would signal this truly was the end, so I jumped forward ten years… But I didn’t count on the series continuing in anime form, so I bet it was really rough on everyone over at the anime company. (laughs) When the kanzenban came out several years later, I added a bit more to the ending. I thought that somehow it just didn’t click. I wanted to make it more clear that Goku’s battles were over, and that a new generation was taking over.

17 and 18 were perpetual energy machines. It’s possible that in order to use their energy, Cell had to keep them intact but micronized them (which is the capsule corp tech)inside, which is why he absorbed them whole instead of slurping them up.

How were Cell and all those Super Saiyans and androids who are way stronger than Frieza able to fight on the surface of the Earth without pulverizing the planet? Vegeta was already powerful enough to destroy the Earth the first time he appeared. How much stronger than early Vegeta were Perfect Cell and SS2 Gohan? A thousand times stronger? A million? And they strained themselves to their absolute limits with that final beam struggle. It should have atomized the fricking solar system.

This was brought up a few times in the Android saga. The first time was Supa Bejita aiming his Final Flash downward at Cell, which made Trunks yell that he's going to blow up the whole planet. The second time was Cell aiming his Kamehameha at Goku, forcing him up into the air to divert the beam away from the ground. The third time was Goku aiming his Kamehameha downward at Cell, but used his Instant Transmission to appear in front of Cell and aim it back up. Then the forth with Cell aiming his Kamehameha downward at Gohan, fully intending to destroy the Earth if Gohan tried to avoid it

said when you have Toei creating most of the lore and worldbuilding out of Toriyama' barebones comic only for Toriyama to come out of retirement as a result of a shitty Amerislop live action movie and start actually filling in the comic's lore and now everything fans accepted for 20 years turned out to be wrong or can't work with what exists now, so it's all frustrating and sloppy and what's worse is that Toriyama's new lore retcons aren't even good. I'll never get over Toriyama literally making a shittier version of Midichlorians to explain how Super Saiyan works, then not even remembering it and saying "you make your back tingle" a year later. Whatever magic the man had in the 80s and 90s, he lost well before Super started.

Toriyama's magic was literally only a thing because, just like George Lucas, he was whipped into shape by editors who didn't accept his bullshit. Dragonball fans beat themselves into thinking that Toriyama's touch = automatically great because GT and the Garlic Jr sagas were bad and Battle of Gods was good, but in reality, Toei's writers were always way better than Toriyama and Toriyama's best work were always under the whip of his editors at Shonen Jump. Once Toriyama became too big to say no to, DB as a series started falling apart because the man just didn't have it in him to pull off a story like this. He wanted to do stuff like Dr Slump and never made that a secret.
