    I've seen this stupid comic millions of times by now, and yet only now am I noticing the blurred real life pictures that were used as the backgrounds. This comic really does boil down to the lines meme.

      Does anyone still have the Home Improvement copypasta from when the meme was fresh? That's the best way to explain Loss but Buckley nuked the comments and I don't think the original threads are archived anywhere.

      You might be baiting but I'm going to write an explanation anyway.
      Ctrl+Alt+Del, known as CAD, was one of the original gaming webcomics back in 2002. It's hard to believe now, but back then pretty much all you had for comics based on video games were Penny Arcade and sprite comics like Bob and George. It was hackneyed, overwritten, and lazily drawn, but there really was almost nothing available around at the time, so people followed it anyway.
      As time went by, the creator, Tim Buckley, got quite a bit of an ego and fancied himself a serious artist. He introduced ongoing plotlines and commented on politics by threatening politicians who were trying to ban violent video games.

      This comic from 2008, titled Loss, was the moment when Buckley seriously tried to turn his gag-a-day strip about video games into a serious drama about the wife of his self-insert gamer character having a miscarriage. It was so tone-deaf it became a massive meme and was spammed everywhere. It's been spammed so much that people would make simplified versions of it, eventually becoming so recognizable that they broke it down to its essential shapes. People have mostly forgotten about the original webcomic and the time of the internet that spawned it, but they remember Loss.

        I've always wanted to see what the original reaction to the whole thing was. The closest I've come is to the LOSS music video on YouTube with all the posts in the background

          Here's one of the original reaction threads on Something Awful: https://web.archive.org/web/20080705053405/http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2885203&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1

          I have some more, but unfortunately they require the paid archives upgrade.

          You forgot to mention his accompaning blogpost where he explained how at one time his gf had had a miscarriage and how it was a sad occasion but he had also been relieved since had no one wanted that baby anyway. Also, he sent a photo of his dick to a 12 yearold kid.

          Yeah, I was keeping it simple, but you really could write a whole book on it.

        >You can't whiplash from le funni gamer comic to miscarriage over the course of one or two strips.
        Yes, you can, because that's how a tragedy like that is going to hit in real life. One minute you're yucking it up about video games, and then you get a call from the hospital and your girlfriend had a miscarriage. Literally what happened to Buckley in real life.
        In truth, that comic is a really great piece of art and the fact that it became a dumb punchline shows how braindead the internet is. Heartless, too, because it's about a real life baby real life dying, but I won't moralgay over cad.

      >Infamous for words words words and the "BU face"
      >Creator starts to creep bits of his real life into the comic
      >Readers don't mind because it's still just "lol video games!"
      >His wife has a miscarriage
      >Copes by making Loss as his comic, starts small serious arc of the characters healing
      >Readers who don't know the backstory find it hilariously jarring
      >Rest of internet memes it because it has a bunch of funny elements (the BU faces, the characters being easy to crop/paste or replaced with shit like Doom Guy)

      Also, I think an important piece is that he would always have some idiotic punchline about video games or women in the 4th panel, but in this 4th panel, it's his wife having a miscarriage lmao. If you were a regular reader expecting a punchline and instead received a straight up depiction of a miscarriage it'd be pretty jarring and funny I guess.

    did anybody else experience these in school? when I was in 4th grade they decided to switch to base 8 in math class so we would use these to do our calculations, the squares are worth 1, 2, 4, and 8 respectively and you would put dots on them to represent your sum total
    so for example to make a 5 you would put a dot in the 4 and 1 spot, to make 15 you would put a dot in all the spots, or alternatively you would put 2 dots in the 8 spot and a negative dot in the 1 spot

    then in 5th grade having realize it was moronic we went back to normal math and my entire grade was left with a massive gap in basic arithmetic skills

        that was just scratching the surface, it was an entire nu-math system

        Because not all kids learn the same instead of just teaching standard lessons to everyone and differentiating when you see a kid who might need a different approach the expectation is that teachers should teach a bunch of different approaches despite the fact that it confuses the ever-loving frick out of kids. The reality is that 99% of kids will be fine with base 10 and standard algorithm for addition/subtraction, and equal groups for division/multiplication and the ones that don't sure as frick are almost certainly not going to grasp base 8 or open number lines. I'm a teacher and I just lock my door and don't teach kids this shit. My math scores are close to the highest in my grade and the one higher does the same thing as me and we just pretend like we do it the same as everyone else. I pulled 3 kids out of the bottom 20 percent last year because their issue was all this shit. It really pisses me off what gets pushed into classrooms.

      That's just binary tho,
      9 = 1001
      0 = 0000
      6 = 0110
      7 = 0111
      I had never seen it represented like this, but if you study CS this might be useful (?) because you need to use binary a lot. Or at least you had to use binary a lot when I studied CS.

        But the question is should you be unending arithmetic and teaching 4th graders to do that instead of 5+4=9

    • 11 months ago

      This got me thinking, how is math being taught now a days in schools? I think I remember teachers saying they were taught different methods as well when they were in school. What is with them trying to change things every generation or two? Wouldn't this cause more problems than just having a base system?

        That shit is from getting a teaching degree in college. One of the activities they do is teach college students math in some weird base in order to give them a perspective on what kids are going through when you try to teach them new concepts. That shit ends up in actual classrooms because these people miss the point of the exercise and think its something they're supposed to be teaching.
