They probably wanted a 'known' fantasy and likely found they already had the rights. They lost the rights to Narnia to Netflix, Discworld rights have apparently been sold to an unnamed company (with a condition that they're faithful adaptations so we don't get shit like The Watch again), there isn't a lot of wide audience fantasy left with rights freely available.
