The real answer is he's Japanese so anything outside of Japan is more or less meaningless to him. It's all just gaikoku
You don't think it's true? He's old and it's quite possibly his last movie. They didn't see fit to give him an award for any of his other movies especially the ones that are better so why now?
It'd be like if Canada had an oscars night. What American would show up? Who cares what Canada thinks. That's how Miyazaki views these awards.
The difference is that in every other way he thinks about America nonstop
He went to the US and received an academy honorary award in 2014
He just doesn't go anywhere anymore
why would an 83 year old man refuse to go on a 13 hour flight jus to get say a speech in public and immediately take another 13 hour flight?

Imagine believing this lmao. I had to look up Shinkai — everyone who knows anything about anime knows Miyazaki, and has since (at least) the 90s.

You overestimate zoomers knowing who Shinkai is as a name and a personality, especially compared to old man Miyazaki whose name is plastered on every project he's directed.
Btw, I just watched Nausicaa with my 10y/o daughter the other night. She definitely doesn't know who Shinkai is.
Because he already knew the Godzilla guys were going to attend so they get the honor of bringing the trophy back with them as well as their own after winning visual effects.
>doesn't show up
he just stays in his house or gibili's studio or his own atelier and barely goes anywhere else these days. he's an old man. >refuses to acknowledge award
he does acknowledge award
ghibli sent a video to the academy and he showed up in it
?t=1558
it's a bit surprising that even the producer didn't show up today but maybe they really didn't expect to win
Hes a very spiteful man but then again so is anyone who hates anime
>tranime

He knows they just wanted to give him an award before he dies instead of judging the movie seriously on its merits.

He already has an Oscar dumbass
They wanted to give him another one before he died, dummy. There's better movies of his that didn't win. It's all meaningless and he knows it.
>so why now?
He's more popular now than ever. That's all the oscars is - a popularity contest.
Makoto Shinkai is probably more popular than Miyazaki in the west now

I mean, it's not like he really had any competition, besides Kangzman: Enter the Baboonverse.
That’s what it seems like to me. Boy and the Heron kind of sucked.
They already gave him one for Spirited Away.
Yea when I'm told most of the "academy" doesn't fricking watch the movies I'd also not care about their shit award.
He got one before for Spirited Away and didn't show up in protest of the Iraq war. Why didn't he go this time?

Norm hosted the Canadian movie awards once. I would have gone to that if I was invited

>thank you for paperweight, gaijin
How do you respond without sounding mad?

Would have been more based if he went there and started ranting about the genocide in Palestine.
If I was Japanese, I’d hate America too.
