marathoning season 5 and macnulty fabricating a serial killer really grinds my gears. And it's not just him who's gone insane, black detective on the wire is in on it.

it was a completely contrived plot because they wrote themselves into a corner by making Marlo too OP. the Hamsterdam plot in season 4 was already stretching my suspension of disbelief, but it still would have been the greatest show ever if it had just ended on that final shot where the kid is looking out at the neighborhood.

i think they just wanted to do a season featuring the newspapers and journalism couldn't think of a sane way of fitting it into the plot and since it was the final season anyway that just said frick it and made mcnutty and freeman go full moron

      >hamsterdam
      >unbelievable
Go to 3rd and Pike in Seattle, Kensington in Philly, or Skid Row and you can see Hamsterdam irl. It's not as crazy as you may think

yeah but this is like 2003 we're talking about, the country wasn't that far overboard back then.

... skid row has been a place cops were afraid to go for about a century anon.

there were cops at Hamsterdam though, on the perimeter keeping everything in line with permission from their Sergeant. that's a lot different than just ignoring a crime riddled spot which every major police department does to some degree.

Complete fricking lie. There is a fricking police station next to skid row. Well since its so bad now its actually a part of it.

it wouldn't have gotten greenlit if it did, dumbass. but the Bunk/Omar exchange NEVER EVER EVER would have been written in the 2010's or 2020's.

Not to mention Avon's lecture to Stringer which basically amounts to "you're not smart enough to survive in the 'legal' business world"

Honestly still better than season 2. I just fricking hate le Ziggy Duckatello and I am pretty sure everyone fricking hated him afterwards because we never get to see him again after his conversation with Frank.

I too disliked season 2 at first. I now think it's one of the best, but I do hate the character ziggy.

I thought it made a kind of thematic sense. McNulty only became a cop to feel smart and get the better of people. That's what he does his entire career, inserting himself into other people's busniness just to show off. That's exactly what a media-obsessed serial killer does. McNulty found a way to thunb his nose at the cops and help his fellow cops at the same time.
Freamon had little to lose by this point and was the most fervently against police politicking. He would love a chance to turn the departments dysfunctions on their head.

The only insane part of the plot is the fact it was at the municipal level rather than the federal level. The FBI should have not only taken over the case when it was presented, they would have absolutely tied it to the war on terrorism in some extremely obtuse way and proceeded to dump hundreds of millions of dollars into Baltimore State police. It should have ended with Lester and McNutty being let go, but Valchek and Rawls end up getting Chief of State Police/Chief of Baltimore police with MASSIVE budgets, the war on terror becomes the new focus, and all that money goes into slushfunds for corrupt cops and a dime of it never reaches the streets of Baltimore. You tie in the newspapers by having the upstart quote-maker be the mouthpiece for the FBI, making up fantastical stories about a terrorist Islamic serial killer, which totally detracts away from the real crimes happening on the streets. David Simon really fricked this up, which boggles my mind because a year later he does Generation Kill and its a masterpiece.

damn the internet is converging on the correct order after all these years
Everyone knew 5 was shit but people used to seriously think 3 was a good season

This show is overrated. It jumped the shark earlier than season 5, the gay Black person superhero facing off with brother calzone comes to mind.
It was decent but not in the league of prestige tv.

Lester was always the writer's pet. I hated how in the earlier seasons he gets to act all high and mighty and talk down to McNulty for doing shit without consulting the rest of his team, and then proceeds to do shit without consulting his the rest of his team. Somehow nobody (not even McNulty) realize this blatant hypocrisy, and everyone just stands around in awe at Lester's good po-lice work.

S1 Lester wasn't working cohesively with the team because most of them were bad police. Once the Major Crimes Unit is brought back, Lester is staunchly against McNulty's cavalier attitude and blowing off the rest of the team. It's only after Major Crimes is disbanded and all his good police-work is going to shit does Lester try it McNulty's way.

Hard to find a series that doesn't shit the bed after 4 seasons. The smart ones plan ahead to wrap it up in S5. Even then, you get some garbage sometimes.
