I like bw aswell but that's when pokemon design started to suffer, now it's just shit, no pokemon design from gen 6 onwards could sell a movie. Just forgettable over designed but still somehow too simplistic. It's likethe original artists actually knew how animal muscles and bones work to add realism and the new deaigns are blobby garbage. With a bunch of stupid shit added on.

kingdra, crobat, and steelix are some of the greatest designs in the entire series and single stage pokemon are not inherently bad but you make some good points otherwise

Gen 2 is when they started doing 🙂 bobblehead designs and pokemon literally based on Jap comedians and emoticons, as well as admitting they were making things softer for westerners too. It’s absolutely a step down from intent to execution.

There's no scene of pikachu btfoing a water pokemon with electricity. There's nothing in the film about typing.
All the action scenes are just running away from 'crazy' pokemon. They're basically cut and paste car chase/ footchase scenes from generic action films. There's nothing strategic or mechanic related to pokemon itself.
Pokemon are just wallpaper for a totally generic childrens action film. Whereas a pokemon film should revolve around elemental typing, related themes, visuals and metaphor, and battle strategy.
There aren't even goons they battle.
It's the same problem all the adaptation movies used to have, where they make the movie about something completely unrelated to the game, and I'm shocked they made the same mistake with Pokemon.
I was fine with them not doing a league/gym or rocket film they just had to incorporate the mechanics and have more of the original dynamic.
Like the same story they did, but 1 more kid to have the 3 kid thing, and they all have/catch a few pokemon, and have to battle goons/ each other to move the plot along and there's some 'who can defeat that' typing logic and asspulls.
Could have still been the same basic plot.

for me it was ok, pikachu looks cute af and the blondie is a hottie, also its one of the first time we see and actual pokemon-human coexistence done right, it has its funny moments too

The real tragedy of detective pikachu is they actually realized the world and designed the Pokemon well and they had a decent budget for it. They even cast it relatively well.
All of the production work was there for this amazing thing which would have balooned but the writing and story was terrible.
The fricking father son melodrama.. jesus christ. What kids universally loved about pokemon is that the story was always just getting away from your parents and being free and the parents were never a problem or even relevent. It was like beavis and butthead.
They should really just stick to their status quo half ass games and anime. The kids still love it. I'm a school bus driver and the kids leave their cards on the bus all the time and it's a pain in the ass making sure the right kid gets it back.

Like the Sonic movie; don't make it a video game movie, make it a movie that just happens to have video game characters in it. Honestly, Detective Pikachu seemed like it was trying to do this, it just was bad.
It didn't have enough Pokemon was it's main problem. The Sonic movies are all Sonic with very little human side character melodrama.
Maybe Sonic 2, but Sonic 1 was pretty focused on Tom and Sonic.
