Race is a legitimate concern, though. LotR does not have the kind of easy fast travel that would lead to multi-racial societies all over the place. Racial diversity would be present in port cities where traders are passing through, and hardly anywhere else.

Black folk. sorry, its mainly just the Black folk. laypeople wont say it, but everyone knows it. tolkien never wrote middle earth with a single black in mind, except maybe some of the eastering armies or the harad people. and even then that's mostly north africans and arabs and south asians, not sub sahara africans

      Anonymous

Also what stupid nerds usually reply towards this criticism is dumb shit like "Well there are dragons and fantasy creatures in this world but you draw the line at black elves and black dwarfs?" and to that I would say well, there are haradim and easternings in this world who are canonically all supposed to be some manner of African and Asian. Now on the next LOTR, I propose the haradim show up in full middle east inspired armor and at least half of them be white blonde people. And they'll say "Well that's different, you can't do that!" And no, it's not fricking different. It's not about suspension of disbelief and they fricking know it, it's just about respecting the rules of the world as established by Tolkien.

If they had went with Black Númenóreans and Harad as a way of showing the "diversity" of Tolkien's world I would watch it. Instead they went with african hobbits, dwarves and elves.

The general decision to do this is a red flag, it is almost as if weaving diversity into a sane plot wasn't enough, they had to butcher it to do their part for the culture war. Whatever their intentions, making a faithful adaption is not among them, and so I have no interest in it.

      Anonymous

This, they could have even given them some more depth showing that not all of the Easterlings and Haradim were bad, maybe that the conflicts between the numeroneans and the harad were a gray issue, show the flaws of men of middle earth, get some diverse characters in, etc. But we know that's not the point, real diversity is not the point. The point is showing middle earth as diverse now because of modern cultural standards and modern diversity quotas. It's moronic and it makes everyone not believe in the world because at every moment you will know, oh this is not it's own world and a show that could exist in any era, no this is a show that will very much be a product of it's time.

Go fricking watch the Obi Wan show, where every episode is just a random cliche forced into a Star Wars setting. It’s the way media is made now. It looks very clinical and soulless. Too much cgi, costumes don't look very good. Galadriel in the Empire magazine picture is wearing leggings with a chainmail imprint on them and it looks really bad. Tolkien very specifically had Elves with long hair and they are ignoring this. You can't have a love story between an Elf and a human because of how Tolkien wrote Beren and Luthien. It is dumb ti scale a rock wall in plate mail. Galadriel's hair being touched is nonsense. Her character being a warrior goes vastly against the source material. Durin being there shows that the writers fundamentaly do not understand the source material, or don't care. That's not what Hobbit would be like back then, their names make no sense also. Tolkien has been very detailed as far as the etymology of each race's language goes and the show is clearly disregarding this. I could go on, there are loads of red flags without even thinking about the skin colour of the actors

The problem isn't the fact that a dwarf is black or whatever. The problem is that there are actors of different races playing characters that should be the same race. If every single elf in the show was black I would be fine with it. In this world, elves are black. Fine. Having them be mixed is what breaks the immersion

There is the contradiction between trying to make it seem dangerous and the production also refusing to show the female "hero" struggling in a real way. The result is no tension and it looks fake.

This. That scene alone looks terrible, it's like a playstation 3 cutscene. The clothes are blowing the opposite way of the wind, it's supposed to be a blizzard but not even her eyes are straining, she does not look like she's putting any effort into her movements. Everything about this show looks like it was made in front of a green screen.

It cannot get to you from the direction of the wall. If you put up a gigantic wall in between you and the direction of north, the window cannot blow into your face from the north. It can reach the sides of your face from either west or east but not from the north.

            Anonymous

Yes I'm aware. I've read the Silmarillion. And there are many reasons why it's a nonsensical direction to take the character, not least of which because it's set 15 hundred years after the end of War of Wrath.

Are you moronic? I did not say that. It was merely one of the last major events of the age. The point was it's been well over a thousand years since any of the events that could have caused her PTSD in the FA whether that's the death of her brothers, death of other elves, or the consequences of leaving Valinor.

What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier

PTSD doesn't just go away and can come back strong from events in the future, think about who caused Finrods death, think about who is about to re-emerge in middle earth and bring more death and destruction to her people and lands.

                >It's been 15 hundred years anon... That is an extraordinary amount of time
15 years in human equivalent terms, not so much for an elf
                >But even if she still has it she doesn't know Sauron is back until far later
But she will know *something* is returning, whether that's Sauron or a lesser minion of Melkor she will recognise the growing threat of darkness after the time of peace at the start of the first age with her 10/10 perception skills.

They will probably try and do something along the lines of her wanting to prevent the darkness that comes to the elves (like they experienced in the 1st age). That then feeds into why she (and the other elves) would want rings of power, to this time try and prevent the death and decay of their lands/people. Ultimately she is unable to prevent this from happening, aside from in her own small patch of land.

so they just accept the lawsuit then?

What about if you don't want spoilers for silmarillion and read it on day unbiased. Is this going to cover anything specifically written in tolkien's work? like lotr and parts of the hobbit

              Anonymous

Some of the Silmarillion events are listed in the appendices of LoTR, like Finrod at Dagor bragollach so that's why they can include it.
They are basically using bits and pieces across LoTR, appendices and the hobbit to construct a 2nd age story about Saurons rise to power, creation of the rings, downfall of Numenor and Saurons subsequent defeat.
Alot of filling in the gaps but those are the big events everything is framed around

    >we are making new characters because tolkien apparently didn't make enough of them already
    >we are ignoring the lore and established cultures with complex and nuanced histories
    >we are focusing on making a 2022 values story instead of focusing on a timeless story tolkien is known for
    >we are creating unbelievably ridiculous over the top action setpieces instead of toning it down with weight and value
I don't want to see your story jammed into Tolkien's skin, I want to see Tolkien's story. Friendship, hope, perserverance, courage, venturing into the underworld and defeating the dragon when the hour is dark, finding something and bringing it back and restoring society. LOTR trilogy is timeless, you can watch it today and it still holds up because it focuses on the human instead of fleeting political sentiments.

its a fantasy show injecting real life identity politics into its fabric, therefore it's no longer true fantasy and just a twisted mirror of reality in a fantasy setting. they are purposefully removing all escapism from all media and forcing people to constantly think about the modern world and societal inequity. they do not want people checked out, they can't be divided that way.
