      >free entertainment
      >get to play with characters you like
      >outlet for an obsession
      >feels like you're in control of your entertainment

How do people draw consistently? I keep drawing nonstop for like a month or two then get burnt out and draw nothing for the next month until the cycle repeats. Meanwhile all the artists I know can pump out masterpieces seemingly all the time. Frick.

Pace yourself so you don't burn out.
Accept that there is always someone who's better than you and don't care about them, just care about you.
Remember that social media and art portfolios are where people upload their best works, so not only do you get a survivor bias of not seeing their failures nor that they drew X, Y or Z last year but only just uploaded it, but you get a survivor bias of being directed to those who are better than 90% of all other artists in their field.
Just remember that you're 1) drawing for yourself or 2) drawing for a client/employer, and someone charging four figures for a YCH background character in a scat piece is "literally who" to you.

I kinda sorta started to stopped practicing yesterday. just did like the very minimum of practice. but instead yesterday I've been working on drawing and designing my characters more. I'm not very satisfied with my coloring, either I suck and am doing it very shitty or the pencils are crap. right now I just want to do like a full roster of characters, but aside from that I really need get better on drawing hands especially hands on hips.

I mean we all got to take a break, don't stress yourself over it. I'm no expert but if it starts feeling like a chore, and you're not really having fun or drawing what you want to draw. then maybe you should take a break. like shit's not a race bro.

I know some of you probably won't like me for posting these videos, but they helped me understand a little more of what I'm about personally.

Art is a commitment anon, it only goes as far as you want to take it. Never force yourself to do something that you know is going to burn you out, start with a routine you feel comfortable with and turn it into a habit. If you can't commit to something you want to be good at, then either find something else that will help you keep at it, or stop altogether and rethink your approach on what you're doing. Personally I found that when I play music, especially ambient music, that immediately makes my mind mute out everything and I suddenly become productive and enjoy making art. I've also found that going outside for half an hour helps refresh things for me and I go back in feeling good about drawing. That's what helps me, it might be different for you.
Find your thing that motivates you to draw or make it a force of habit then structure an approach off of that to better your work.

          Fetish stuff

          Anonymous

I guess what motivated me was jealousy in a way. I can remember back in the day when I was a kid in school really liking Spider-Man, so sometimes I would draw him in my free time, but there was this one kid in class who drew spider-man so much more better than me, that as a kid made me think he was an expert. there was even another kid who drew really good in the Dragon Ball Z style. and here I was still drawing stick figures.
years later at another school there was a girl who was really good at drawing sonic characters and OC's including her own Pokémon mystery dungeon fan comics. and the later on in High school the person that really motivated me to draw was my high school crush. she drew a lot of Sonic and Invader Zim stuff, but aside from that she drew stuff that wasn't related to those things and is genuinely a good artist. sadly I never got to see much of the art she drew on her sketch book, and that kinda further made me more jealous.

I have always liked drawing and comics including making my own comics, but I was always that kid who would always talk all the time about making great things but never actually doing them. it's only been almost a decade since I started drawing. sometimes I get a little better and sometimes I get a little worse. nowadays jealousy doesn't really motivate it more just the need of finally wanting to make something and actually going through with it, instead of procrastinating all the time.

Is it normal for digital art to be more difficult than traditional pencil & paper? I find that my lines are a lot wonkier with digital, it's bugging me. Is there anything that can be done to overcome this?

      Anonymous

maybe it has something to do with you're stroke setting. i've only used my drawing tablet for a short time but when i realized I can do better lines by raising my stroke setting, digitizing my traditional sketches was less of a hassle.

      Anonymous

you could try zooming in or rotating the canvas to make a stroke easier

      Anonymous

Not really, it's why a lot of people only do the inking and colors digitally.

      Anonymous

You most likely just have to practice with it, a LOT. Maybe mess with some tablet/program settings to feel more comfortable as well. In due time, you'll get used to it, and it'll be significantly easier than traditional.

Okay. So yesterday reading this, hit me hard. I like doing stencils but I'm always subconscious doing the background, so reading that confirm that I frick up.

Looking at it today, I like it. It's very chaotic like the character. I'm thinking of spraying the bat symbol, but overall I'm satisfied. It follows my no.1 rule that you can still recognize the character.

I do appreciate your negative criticism. It looks like shit, I understand. But again this is a spray painted stencil, not a painting. That's all, I'm feeling more positive for it than I was yesterday.

              Anonymous

it's bad composition. the background is too busy with too much contrast and form and white specifically and that takes away from your stencil work especially where your subject is mostly black and white. you're trying way too hard to fill the negative space. the bat symbol is the most offensive bit. it's its own subject that pulls focus before you've even seen the homosexual that lulz, it sits off center, and it intersects and crowds out your subject instead of highlighting it in any way. you were better off leaving it blank but just a little bit of amorphous overspray would have served it much better.

There's no "lore" per se. It's just the idea of a communal round house for some kind of tribal civilization.

I haven't developed the idea past that point.

    Just finished this animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-aMBfk4HmA
I really wanted to make something partly inspired by PilotRedSun. Got a chance to play around with some different styles, was fun.

Hah thanks, I made a basic model of him in blender and realized 3D is pretty time consuming. I'd like to play around with it some more once I get a better feel for it.

    >tfw can draw again after college exams
feels good man , it's been nearly 2 months.

I want to use summer to get good, but I honestly don't know what I want my art to be, so choosing both a path and a reference artist is hard as frick.

The only idea that I have now is to work on the fundamentals again until something clicks.

Why do you need a reference artist?

Having a role model is good not only on drawing but basically every other aspect of life.
You need a concrete goal of what you want to archive, and a place where you can see in which areas to improve. Also seeing what aspects of life he simplifies and how is pretty important.
Styles aren't born for nothing you need to see something and copy it before making it your own.

          >Styles aren't born for nothing
Styles happen when you fail at realism

          Style = cope

Actually I think influential styles are often the result of having mastered the fundamentals. Sure, a lot of artists try to skip all that in the beginning, but it's only after you have a solid understanding of the basics before you can start playing around with styles in an effective way.

What should I do if I want to make animations, but don't know what those animations should be about? I want to make youtube videos, but every topic I want to talk about seems done to death.

We're living in the year 2022, anon. Anything and everything is beaten with a dead horse no matter what topic you choose. Animate what interests you and try to improve as much as you can over time. People respect the effort you put in, not necessarily the topic you decide to comment on. Also, there's parody.

I think I'll just read creepy pastas, but I'll try my hardest to create 3d models and animated the stories. Even if they're trash.

Yeah I hate it as well, but could you perhaps make a imigur account and post more of your work in that, it looks so good it would be a shame to never share.

the bulk of my work is /ic/ type anatomy and perspective grinding, it's only very rarely i draw something finished or fanart-y, and when i do it's often OC stuff. every now and again I'll do some Cinemaphile related husbando art, which I'll post here. glad you enjoy it at least, haha

Good lord dude you draw faces excellently, do you have any recommendations as for what helped you learn how to draw faces the most? It's my biggest roadblock

Thanks! My number one suggestion is to study basic shapes and volume. Once you start categorizing the head/face into different planes and shapes it all gets a lot easier. Also watch as many videos on draftsmanship as you can, some channels that I continue to watch are Marc Brunet, Marco Bucci, Proko and anything that hosts interviews/lectures by skilled artists. Steve Huston has a fantastic 3 hour course on drawing the head and face for free on YouTube, that was a big help in learning some of the major construction points in that area.

Also just find artists you enjoy and trace them, then draw from memory, and reverse engineer how they came to settle on a design. Some of my biggest artistic inspirations are:
        >moby francke
        >heather campbell
        >TB Choi
        >piratecashoos
        >Ashley cope
        >glen keane (and most other renaissance era Disney artists)

I have at some point intensely studied the work of all these artists and continue to do so. Also of course use photo reference, especially when tackling subjects that you aren’t very familiar with. Good luck, anon!

Steve Huston is a favorite of mine too, I have some of his academy videos saved on my PC that I should review again. David Finch is one I've really enjoyed lately too and he helped me understand how to do construction in a way that I understand.
Thanks for the recommendations fren, I hope you succeed in whatever you set out to do with your skills and I hope to be at your level soon 🙂

So what's more important to you guys? A unique art style, or something that's well drawn even if it looks relatively generic?

depends on context. in comics clarity above all else.
