Considering we're comparing this to Hollywood, it was still better lol.

Japanese Live Action Death Note is way better than the anime and manga. Even tho the third is irrelevant and also there is Red Hot Chili Peppers in the soundtrack for some reason.

I have never once watched an animated movie or show and thought "hmm, you know what, I'd rather be watching a live action version of this instead."
Not everything animated needs a live action version.

There was a not-entirely-unrealistic expectation that Odd Taxi's final episode would be live action.
There's now a series retelling the story from different perspectives in live action. It's pretty kino.

I've seen a few Samurai X: trust/betrayal OVA and Perfect Blue immediately comes to mind. In fact, perfect blue is practically a movie. Also, I know they already have live action samurai x but they followed the tone of the series, not the OVA so don't @me

GITS live action would have if it was made around 2K. Were real sets and less prevalence of cgi are the norm. Every action movie seems so slow nowadays.

there are some that I could think of because the anime adaptations are very cheap and they dont involve lots of action or visual humor so it could be made decently into live action
that said its all hypothetical because I cant think of a single example where this happened

fricking this. The only reason AMERICANS want to make live action adaptions is because disney has a monopoly and brainwashed the entire country into thinking animations are ONLY for kids. So they see a cartoon for adults and it fricking breaks their mind.

I liked it, but it very quickly changes from a melancholy show about the passage of time to a shonen. The characters are fun and the action is pretty good though.

I don't know why it's popular with people under 40, however if you're a middle aged autist who ignores all your friends while you obsess over otaku shit, then it's very relatable.

same reason young people fantasize about utopian revolutions using 19th century templates. frieren is postmodern power fantasy about regret, the past, existentialism, temporally transcendental qualia (love, hope, death)

dozens of manhwas/mangas do this now
          >Skeleton Soldier Couldn’t Protect The Dungeon
          >Solo Leveling
          >One Punch Man
          >Spy X Family

you're going to see this artistic medium evolve as the postmodern wave begins to hit the asian cultures that produce it. and yes it will be tacky and lost in translation and mostly garbage.

reason behind its success: young people have their recent memories digitally stored. they've taken thousands of photos and videos and are all secretly hoarding their youth, their beauty, their innocence.

resentful of the memories (because they do not fit a desired ideal) and of other people going through this process.

they resent that they can't live in the moment and enjoy it, and then when it passes resent that they couldn't capture the feeling properly and so their memory is filled with regret for something they never experienced. this is channeled into a cultural and social romantic nostalgia for the past, the passage of time, and the temporal ephemera of childhood and youth.

frieren captures this because the titular lolli elf evokes this exact bittersweetness. she missed her chance to enjoy her past adventures while she was having them, and now derives meaning from this loss. it's not a regret for what you did or for what you didn't do,
          >it's a third type of postmodern regret -
          >the regret of not experiencing yourself as you are now back when you were experiencing yourself as you were then.

if you're older this is some weird vapid selfish moronic thing you struggle to understand. if you're young OMG SHES JUST
          LIKE ME!!

          picture highly related.

At the end of the day, it's a fighting magical anime. If you come in expecting mnemosyne, you're going to be disappointed. If you come in expecting to enjoy some good ole anime action, it's a nice surprise because of how it begins build its world
