It factually is true. If you actually read footnotes, you'll notice that most of the people in hell are just members of the church he had public disagreements sprinkled in with popular villains. Purgatorio is better than Inferno anyway. Paradiso is a bit too rigid.
I didn't get the impression that this episode had any intentional scares. I had headphones on and didn't notice any jumpscares. I think the vibe of Spamish land must just creep some people out

There's a golden opportunity to add an extra layer to this joke come the DVD release, if/when there is one. Which is that, if you have sub-titles enabled, they add a sub title for the waitress when she screams as shes chasing the car that says "Sir, you forgot your drink" or something along those lines.
It would be an easter egg for the dvd release. something you only find by turning on the captions. like, everyone thinks she was just screaming because its a wacky cartoon, turns out she was actually saying something in spamish and trying to give pim his drink.

But I also think there was other DNA in there, Michael Cusack springs to mind as well but there is something else in there. I am certain I am forgetting something, I hope they talk more about their inspirations for this episode in a future interview. I would be very interested to see what combination of artistic DNA resulted in this final product. The voice was obviously stawberry clock inspired, so perhaps other parts of it were also early newgrounds.

I for one wish he'd draw "normal" fatties if that makes any sense, where the face and whole body is affected, not just the stomach, not a big fan of muffin tops or hanging bellies, those feel very detached from the actual character to me.
