This. He never changed, nothing happened, he just dropped the sarcastic character he had been totally ironically playing for years. He was always the same douchebag.
He sold himself to more with his voiceover stuff on [as], then was too good to do any of that anymore.
I like to think he started off with honest intentions, his show grew somewhat and he developed some connections with some establishment folk and eventually he got deep enough to become part of the swamp to some degree. friends with john podesta and such. by the time obama got into office he started having conflicts of interest and by the time he took over letterman he had become a true believer/propaganda mouth piece.
same thing with the daily show and jon stewart. when those guys became an important platform they started to get instrumentalized where the comedy thing was a new angle. I really do think they were approached and then given some sugar coated speech about responsibility and bla bla bla or maybe even got some low level introduction into the agenda pandering to their idealism. maybe playing to their ego. you're a smart guy, you see this and you see bla bla, so what do you think? if we don't do it then this will happen and you don't really want that? right? nobody is forcing you, just think about it. if you don't do the thing john mccain might get into office. a smart guy like you wouldn't want that.
that said with high functioning normies they don't even have to spell it out but communicate all that stuff indirectly with hints and smiles, gestures, favors, attention and so on. heck, maybe they did spell it out, but I'd say they're more smooth than that. if you go with the flow good things happen, like getting the letterman show, if you don't it seems like you're having lots of bad luck. "my hands are tied" etc. etc.
He became a typical talking head who lets Trump live in his head rent free. Has no understanding of why he became popular in the first place and would rather go for the easy make fun of thing I don't like schtick rather than use any nuance.
