      >but it has some seriously good episodes in there.
You can count on two hands the "seriously good" Voyager episodes anon, which are almost always the character studies of Doctor or Seven or both of them together. Because Doctor and Seven are the only actual characters on Voyager, everyone else is a one dimensional cardboard cutout. Who gives a frick about the Klingon hafu or even that c**t Janeway? And the reason why Doctor and Seven even work on this show is because they tap directly into the big theme of Star Trek that characters like Spock, Data, and Odo explore: what does being "human" even mean in space with a bunch of aliens around with different value systems? How does a character with some inherent deficiency (lack of emotions, lack of empathy) overcome this and affirm their humanity in their character arc? And the reason the writers liked writing these characters on Voyager is obviously because they were the best actors on the show by a mile and could pull off those emotional scenes, unlike the other shitters on the crew.

When Janeway is struggling with the temptation to alter her irish holo bf into perfection, I expected the doc to weigh in with his experience with his own holodeck family but nothing. I still think it would've been kino if Picard realizes that Shinzon wants to kill all Romulans and he fights to protect Romulus, thus earning their respect.
Instead he wants to go after Earth like literally everyone else.

              Anonymous

This. Moreover, it'd actually RAISE the audience stakes. Because everyone knows that, even in star Trek, they're not going to let earth be destroyed and have it stick. Romulus, though? You never know, the writers might have just gotten enough leeway to let the villain blow up Romulus... I mean, they got to write it out of existence in what is literally the next Star Trek film.

            >Even first contact is shittier than every TOS movie
No argument from me. The original movies are in the inner sanctum of peak trek along with TNG, DS9, and TOS. V is the only one where there's an argument, but people seem to like it on Cinemaphile and /trek/. I don't like it, but the camping scenes are very comfy.

The problem with V was lack of polish, but it at least TRIES. which is more than you can say for any of the movies that come after

The first one is fine (I’d argue it’s the best Star Wars movie made in two decades) the second is an abortion first because it’s an awkward remake of the second movie that in itself was a sequel to an episode, and second because the plot was fricking shit. Beyond I legitimately love though and it’s what I wanted the JJ movies to be the whole time, just simple one off action movies like the mission impossible franchise.

Both the JJ directed movies were nothing more than test pilots for his action scenes in the force awakens. The scene of them warping into Jupiter in into darkness was just a worse version of how they entered Star killer base

I know. The scene in ID where the decoy ship flying through the ruins on Kronos is *identica*l to the Falcon flying through crashed Star Destroyers in TFA. It even turns sideways to fit inside a crack (the audience's)

Yup I agree with you. ID sucks compared to 1 and 3. 3 is unapologetically fun. I remember I watched some of the fast and the furious movies the director made when he was announced for trek and it made me a bit more excited. It’s a well shot action movie that utilizes the full cast well. I wish it did a bit better and I wish they just grabbed someone like Brad bird to make another movie. Its insane how incompetent paramount is, sky fall made bond a BILLION simply by advertising it as its 50th anniversary celebration and paramount could’ve done the same thing but just didn’t think of it

I know there's a ton of better rated episodes, but one of my favorite voyager eps is the one where tuvok and Paris are stuck in that cozy desert planet with tank girl. It bookends with young tuvok being an angry Vulcan teen and taming himself with the Vulcan master and has that great payoff moment in the present when tuvok mindmelds with tank girl on voyager and she gets why women are ridiculous.

It's too inconsistent to be the best. Maybe they shouldn't be using a full spread of photon torpedoes when they're talking about how they have no photon torpedoes and no way to make more? But it's definitely way better than people give it credit for. I'd say TNG is still better overall. DS9 does not count as it is literally, and I mean literally to the point of losing a plagiarism lawsuit, just Babylon 5 renamed.

BSG is the obvious one, most of the rest you can google or just google in bulk.

The joke is that VOY was close to a day time soap most of the time. BSG S2+ is similar in that regard and the rest are a joke.

Which is a shame because I caught a bit of it while it was on TV once and I thought hey, this is actually pretty good. I could see kids enjoying it a lot. But I guess nobody was watching it.
Apparently S2 is going to wrap it up with a proper ending, so maybe I'll watch it all when it's finished. That's more closure than a lot of shows get.

kids dont care about it because it was drip fed. if netflix drops 20 eps all at once it will get a lot more views. but apparently netflix made some kind of deal to keep drip feeding so it probably wont be released until Janaury and no one will bother.

There's way too MANY options these days for entertainment. If Prodigy wants to succeed they need to drop all the episodes at once. Kids do not care about week to week releases with huge gaps of time between seasons.

            Kids be like:
"Oh its that weird trek show. I think I saw part of an episode once? It was weird. No thanks. "

And tbh, Prodigy feels kinda dumbed down for children. Star Trek like TNG was always more of a mature show. Kids could watch it, but it never talked down to children. Yet kids loved it and many were inspired to become engineers because of TOS and TNG.

The ultimate issue with Voyager, other than that stupid "directive" from the producers to make the humans robotic to give contrast to the alien characters, is that it couldn't live up to the premise. There were only hints of what it could have been like, episodes like Year of Hell 2 parter. Far more suitable to make the show serialized like DS9 than making it episodic, but the network didnt want that. And at the same time it couldn't pass up being Gilligan's Island in space, constantly with the tease episodes dangling a way home in the plot even though you knew for sure they wouldn't.

Whats funny is Kim and Tom Paris' actor put on weight in later seasons (They said craft services was too awesome at Paramount). You can see it in their face.

And the Producers and Writers had to pull them both aside and tell them they were getting fat and it was showing on camera (I used to do pro photography and the camera is NOT kind to excess fat). Then both actors whined and had to hit the gym.

Now both actors say at conventions they are so happy that "modern television" is so accepting of 'people of all sizes' and they don't need to worry about their weight anymore. They tell stories about how the 90s TV shows had unreasonable expectations for actors to be thin and try to frame it as a horror story.

This infuriates me. They were paid MILLIONS of dollars and the only thing they had to do was NOT eat so much! To stay a certain weight! Millions of dollars! Come on!

                Anonymous

Agreed. They are hired for their looks, it certainly wasn't for their acting talent, so they should damn well have to not get fat. After the show ends, binge out bro.

Over the course of 7 years? Absolutely.

                Kate Mulgrew earned 60K per episode. That's $60,000 x 172 (total episodes) = $10,320,000 million dollars.

Garrett Wang earned 30K per episode. So $5,160,000 million dollars

And the rest of the main cast fell between that range.

Dude unless the actor completely blows all their money on coke and hookers, then they are set for life. A 7 year show will easily get them 5 to 10 million. And Trek actors get residuals. Every single time their episode is aired they earn a small amount (like 25 cents to 1 dollar) and get sent a check each month. How often do Trek episodes get replayed across the world? Those Trek actors probably get a check for a few hundred each month. Doing a convention will earn them a few thousand dollars for a 3 day weekend.

I can literally curl up in a blanket and pillow nest and watch VOY for hours and get good stories.
DISCO has no character building or anything else really. It's just constant action or buildup to the next action sequence. You don't learn much about the characters. The show started off with a whole bridge crew that we could of gotten to know, but instead it only focused on a few and then brings new characters in every season and makes them major characters and continues to ignore a lot of the original background characters they could of built up instead. You don't get to know a characters past or what they want for their future selves. They are very 1 dimensional. You literally get what you see.
