Yes, as part of the tax write-off. Could you try and read? You don't get to write it off AND keep making money off of it. That's called tax fraud.
WB will no longer own it, and then the government will then own it.
But the government is not a video manufacturing and distribution centre, so it goes in some vault, never to be seen or used again.

In the past, THIS is the type of situation that produces actual lost media, expect this show has already been spread to the corners of the internet, so it will never qualify for lost media.
At worst, it becomes "inconvenient for the 12 people who care about it, to find it".

Have corporations owned by families and small groups of people who benefit far more from ensuring the long-term health of the company rather than corporations that are publicly traded and owned by large investment firms and billionaires who only care about enriching themselves and their clients?
Y'know, like what Japan does, a lot of their largest publishers for instance are family-owned operations, including Shueisha, who publishes Shounen Jump.

Actually, my mistake, I confused Shueisha with Kodansha, the latter is family-owned.
But regardless, they're both private entities and not publicly-traded, so the point remains.
American animation needs its own Valve to counteract the animation industry's EA, Take Two, and Activision (Disney, Paramount, and WBD), otherwise it will remain stagnant.

The shows aren't about bringing awareness of these problems or helping them out (even though they claim and pretend its the case), it's pretty much a circus act to the producers. Later on when the show is over they get depressed after realizing how they've made a fool of themselves in front of the entire world and only get worse.

Hell I initially watched it for the drama and insanity. But a lot of the episodes were just too depressing. They were mostly about people with serious emotional issues that never got proper treatment.
But there was an episode about one guy who managed to lose wait and stay healthy. Him and his dad got tattoos to commemorate the weight loss. That was a good episode. He appeared again in a followup episode, still sticking to the diet.

When two companies merge, the one with the money(Discovery) goes through the company with no money(Warner Bros).
They get to write off whatever previous projects they want, because they have the money. Whatever projects they keep, have to for sure be successes, and not just "Yeah, it has a small fanbase, and turns a profit". If too many of the projects you choose to continue, end up not being worth the time/money investment, then you don't get to keep being CEO.
Don't get attached to any WB property for the next few years. There's already rumors of DiscoveryWB's merger with NBCUniversal in 2023. Guess what's going to happen if that merger happens? Another rough of tax write-offs by the NBCUniversal on DiscoveryWB.

It’s really only ever been a CN thing
Disney (and later Nick) doesn’t do it because a lot of their shows are based on IPs, and even if they abandon the show by season 1 and fully kill it off the greater IP the failed show is based off of is important to them
Notice how basically all the tax write offs are not legacy IPs or ones they’d have worth with

        Anonymous

Every IP started from somewhere. Everything was "NEW" at one point in time. On May, 1, 1999 SpongeBob SquarePants premiered.

Correct, but Disney has so many IPs they care about and Nick is so based on what exists now that they won't do the writeoff.

Its a possibility, in hungary after jucika’s creator passed away his estate sold it to the Hungarian government. Not long after she was rediscovered it had turned out that her “copyright” was at the hands of the government. Recently after some negotiations so a compilation book could be released, she was let go and entered the public domain. Now that’s hungary so I’m not exactly sure if the same camps be said about the United States but it’s a non zero chance, don’t see what would be the problem of letting them go rather than just waiting 95 something years until the rights permanently expire because after all the government never took down youtube videos of MEGAS or symbiotic titan

            Essentially yes
            > “They could have put out the blueprint for the marketplace. That’s why they brought everyone (to the conference),” says Lorne Brown, CEO of the ad management firm Operative. But the blueprint wasn’t ready. “So instead they put up a bunch of pictures and did meditation.”
            >The Xandr story is only one piece of the broader misadventure, which one observer called “a nesting doll of ridiculousness.” The story will go down in the annals of mid-’10s hubris, when a telecom looked in the mirror and saw — not the nation’s second-largest phone provider — but a genuine rival to Facebook, Apple and Google. Its foray into media would destroy tens of billions of dollars in market capitalization, force the company to slash its dividend, and cost thousands of people their jobs. And it’s still not entirely clear why it happened.
            > “The rationale never made any sense,” says Craig Moffett, a partner at MoffettNathanson, and a critic of AT&T. “The acquisition of DirecTV, and later Time Warner, was never driven by a strategic analysis of what assets they needed to compete, and then a strategy to figure out the best way to go out and get them. It was driven by what assets they would be allowed to buy, and rationalizing an argument for why it would be a sensible thing to buy them.”

Whole IP. It can't be touched anymore. Its banished to the ether. Functionally extinct.

A stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If they hadn't written it off it would be pushing up daisies. It has rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-franchise.

It doesn't make sense because if the company themselves is not offering the product, then it's by definition not infringing on their profit for that product. It's like when Nintendo stops selling digital only games or closes a webstore. They shouldn't be able to issue takedowns for stuff that there's no way to obtain legitimately.

I think the government should require companies to provide evidence of methods to legitimately obtain a product to be able to pursue cases like this. That's a lie. I think copyright and patent law should be abolished entirely in the name of freedom of information, but that's just not realistic.

      Anonymous

Yes. So the way this works is, to the best of my understanding, all media has an expected lifetime of profitability. Let's pretend Discovery "expected" (because they can just make this shit up) Final Space would be profitable for 5 years. Well, it's currently been 4. They can just declare that last year a "loss" on their taxes, because they claim they are no longer profiting off Final Space.

Now you may ask "But anon, why do we have copyrights for 70 years if companies don't expect to be able to make profit on a product for more than 10?"

      That's a great question.

Well gee, if abortion was legal with those two ammendment, why did it take until the 70s for it to be recognized and not the latest 1800s when the 14th was created and late 1700 during the first draft of the bill of rights

It WAS legal until it started to get banned, then the bans were overturned. Nobody fricking CARED until the 70s.

How does the tax write-off thing work? Are there limitations? Like, could Disney one day decide to make Star Wars a tax write off out of the blue?

      Anonymous

Its more specific productions than a brand. They could write off, say, one of the CG cartoons if they wanted to. But you can't really write off an entire IP like Star Wars, no.

      Anonymous

You write off anything that you need to run your bussiness, by doing it, they recognize it as a loss, what it means, is that that especific product can't make a profit, becaue if it does is tax fraud. If they release it, then it would make a a profit because the loss has already been deducted thus the fraud part, and this is why they can't.

All accounting and the IRS are a literal scam to help rich people make sure is easier for them to run a bussiness than for the poor, taxes is the sole reason the wealth gap increases

The difference between a well-liked property and a property no one likes is that people actually want to keep the former. Only the creators want to keep these shows as well as people in their Community who want to be creators too. They are selfishly motivated, and one of the good things about corporations is that they do not facilitate such narcissism.

The show suffered from an identity crisis where you didn't know whether it was supposed to be a comedy or serious, the artstyle didn't help either since it makes people think of Rick and Morty. Also, Olan's voice for Gary sounds generally goofy and when he tries to be “serious” he does this dramatic whisper like something you would hear from something satirical. It was a mess. Regardless, the show didn't deserve to be legally disposed of forever.

Show would've been significantly better if they
      >Leaned HEAVY into the drama with comedy being a rarity
      >Slightly more realistic art style
      >Got a better actor for gary and limit olan's voice to background or side characters for budget reasons
The show as it stands was so frustrating. It had potential but stayed mediocre.

I thought they shifted out of the comedy-drama mode and made it a fully-fledged drama altogether.

Maybe he should have pitched it to Netflix instead.

      >Mood whiplash, mostly due to Olan wanted it to be more serious while executives wanted it to be more on the comedic side, so the show had this mishmash blend of both where the show doesn't feel genuine with either.
      >Characters are quite bland and move and act in demand of the plot then their own character.
      >Artsyle is quite simplistic and goofy and doesn't mesh well when it tries to get very serious.
      >Gary is a bizarre character to watch because he has all the qualities of a goofy character right down to his voice, but Olan doesn't want to commit to that completely and tries to add some kind of depth to him and have him participate in dramatic scenes, but it ends up coming out awkward because Olan can't make his voice flow with a serious scene.
      >The story itself is not interesting. It feels generic and forgettable.

        Anonymous

Good summation. I'd also argue that the serious moments lost their impact not just from Gary and the art style but also for the fact that everyone kept getting revived like it was fricking Dragon Ball. That big alien guy's death was downright comical too since Ashley was moronic enough to believe that Gary apparently woke up that day and decided to kill him for no reason instead of suspecting that something was fricked.

That's pretty much an example of the characters being governed purely by plot demand.

So this isn't a tax write-off right? How can you write off a "product" you've been selling for years? Warner is probably shelving it forever to not pay whatever contract obligations they have for keeping it on TV and streaming.

      Anonymous

I'm guessing they didn't make back the money they used to produce it, thus it's a "loss"

        Anonymous

Yeah, I'm still confused what exactly a tax write-off is. Especially in this context.
I looked it up, and I see it's when an entity removes something from their ownership and removes responsibility for it in so doing.

But I don't understand what makes it desirable for companies to write-off shows like they did here, especially when the shows have finished seasons.

          Anonymous

Because they believe they'll make more money with the write off at this point.

            Anonymous

But I don't understand how they make money from it.
Does the government re-imburse them for it?

Wouldn't that go against the capitalist principle that in choosing to fund the creation of something, they were taking the Risk that it wouldn't make it's money back in hopes of the Benefit that it would make back several multiples of its funding?

              Anonymous

They don’t get reimbursed, but they can claim the projected losses as a write off so they pay less in taxes. Technically they’re not making more money with this, they’re just paying the government less.
