I lived on a farm until my late teens. This level of attachment to animals is very unhealthy from my perspective. It's sad but not nearly enough for a grown man to cry over. Most doggays would get PTSD if they saw how unceremoniously we put down sick or chicken-eating dogs

A family pet isn’t the same as livestock or game. I hunt, kill, skin, freeze, and eat most things on four legs multiple times a year but theirs no comparison to the dogs that play with my kids or greet me when I come home.
        >unceremoniously
This usually has to do with local laws and ordinances. If I’m in the suburbs, like in the movie, I can’t legally take my sickly and dying dog in the back yard and shoot him; hence why it’s a more emotional experience.

Tried to be strong for my dog when he passed. I cried like a baby the whole time.

When I was born and brought home, there was a little cat there waiting for me named Lev. Lev would keep my family company for 23 years.
He had to be put down almost two years ago now and I still lose sleep over it sometimes. I don't think I'll ever fully get over it.
Needless to say, I also cried like a baby the whole time. I cried for a long time, actually.
People told me "just get a new cat", and I can't even begin to entertain that kind of thought because I'm afraid it would make Lev seem expendable and less like family in my eyes. I don't really understand people who just replace a lost pet immediately. Maybe it's just one of the many different ways people cope.

I never liked this line - “you’re a good dog”. Someone that grows to become that attached to a dog no long sees them as such. They become part of the family.

My yellow lab died from bloat a few weeks before her 12th birthday. It happened while I was sleeping. She went into shock her internal organs started shutting down from lack of blood flow and she barely had enough blood pressure to stand. I held her in my arms as the emergency vet put her to sleep alone at 5am February 20th 2013. I'm a grown man and I cried anytime anything reminded me of her or what happened for the next two weeks.
          She was a rad dog

After this happened my cat started acting weird and my vet wanted to give him Prozac because he had feline depression because she was gone. I had a puppy at the time that would run around the house looking for my yellow dog whenever I'd put up videos of her on my tv

I've been specifically told bot to watch Marley and me because of how my girl died. I'd probably fricking lose it. I'm actually getting a bit teary typing this out now

This is genuinely the most human I've seen anyone allow themselves to be on this site in years. I feel kindred pain anon, just know that you gave them the best life they could have hoped for, a life with someone who loved them unconditionally.

From the day I took her home at nine weeks old to the day she died they were inseparable. He lived another two years but never bonded with my other dog or another puppy I got a year before he passed from feline tradition at 15.

I feel guilty about my lab because she was field line and would have made an awesome hunting dog. She was really smart and pointed when she spotted game which is kinda rare with labs.
Never did any hunting with her though

I feel you, anon. For me, it was every change in my routine because each of them made me realize that my best friend is gone. It was routine that I would wake up every morning and find that my cat had come to sleep on my legs at some point in the night. When I finally had the heart to shoo him off so I could get my day started he would go on his usual spot at the window. Maybe I would give him a ham or turkey slice treat if I make a sandwich. There will never be such a morning ever again.
Eventually the grieving turns into cherishing the memories that you have with them, but the longing of a return to these better times will always remain.

                Lol
My dude would park himself between my legs while I was sleeping and would just stay there trapped in the blankets when I rolled over. If my yellow dog was in the house he'd follow me everywhere I went and would chill next to me while I worked on my car or motorcycle. I once took my girl out of town on a Friday and didn't get back till Sunday and he was still in parking space waiting for us until we got back. He was crazy attached to her.
I have two shepherd dogs now but I'm trying not to get too attached to one of them because I'm supposed to just be fostering and training her but she's a character and is taking a lot of work

                Thanks anon

you've never had a relationship with anything. not even an animal. a dog is the simplest and most pure relationship we can have as human males. there's NOTHING better than a dogs unconditional love. there is nothing that even comes close. a dog will kill for you. it will die for you. I pity people who don't know a dog's love. nothing purer EVER. dogs were put here for us.
