It's masterful how you see how Yusuke is a piece of shit (not entirely rotten but pretty much) and only decides to turn his life around when he sees how devastated his mother was with his death - he thought she wouldn't even care.
That's why Bleach has always seemed like a toothless version of this story: Kubo wanted a protagonist who was a badass but also was afraid the audience wouldn't side with him so he made him a big softy and a good boy.

why did the principal say he was upset with him for trying to save the kids life?

He wasn't upset he saved the kid, but because yuske died. The principal cared about his students and he wanted the best for yuske. He put in effort and made sure yuske got the discipline he needed that he wasn't getting from not having a dad.
Heie was my fav char when I was young because cool edgy brooding darkness fire.
Now I'd say in genkai. She's so cranky, it's great.

That was my feeling til I watched again recently, now I'm enlightened and know Kuwabara is best boy.

He was just frustrated about Yusuke's wasted potential and attitude. It wasn't about the kid but the finality of death and that Yusuke would not have the chance to turn things around and change for the better now that he was dead (in normal circumstances, of course).

Yuske was never a bad guy, his mother was an abusive drunk. Him being a punk and beating people up was just a means for him to make his way in the world, fight or flight.

        > his mother was an abusive drunk
she was also an extremely young single mother
        I think she's like 28 y/o while yusuke is 14

I wonder if Togashi had already thought that Yusuke was the son of a demon back then

I doubt it. It's still a shonen at the end of the day and falls into the same traps

This. I cried when I was a child and saw how Yusuke died in such a tragic and honorable way in the first episode, then the show just goes "yeah le fight yeah REI GUNNNNNN brrrr", for about a hundred episodes and that's it. No more emotionality. Still, it's kino due to aesthetics.

there are many more emotional moments throughout the series. remember the cave training sequence during the dark tournament?

not having the granny dead after the tourny was an extreme cop-out from the writers

I don't know that death means all that much in a series where the main character dies in the first episode.

It was standard "heckin tragedy" melodramatic emotional garbage.
Nearly all shounen shows start this way.
They have to set up the motivation for the 13 year old to go out and get revenge over and make friends along the way while crying and screaming.

      This guy gets it.

The first few times you see it it's understandable. Before the formula is really visible it is enjoyable. I don't think there's an age limit perse but most people tend to start watching these kind of shows in their childhood/teen years.
What beats me is how many guys in their 20's still obsess over new shonens every year. I watched Dragon Ball, YYH, Naruto, but when I was a teenager I didn't want to invest in the same formula again. Now I keep seeing depressed guys in their 20's obsess over the same junkfood shonen and their excuse is always that it's a reprieve from their miserable life.

          >Now I keep seeing depressed guys in their 20's obsess over the same junkfood shonen and their excuse is always that it's a reprieve from their miserable life
There's a lot of depressed adults out there and past a certain point the genre or whether it's live action regular TV or anime just stops mattering

kinda mid series in retrospect but at the end of the day it's a kid show that has the color palette of a fever dream, I liked it
I stopped after the dark tournament arc

Good choice, the show peaks before dark tourney even concludes, only gets way worse form there.

YYH is two different shows stapled together. Everything before Yusuke returns to life is a great character drama with some xfiles thrown in. Everything after is shonenshit. It's top notch shonenshit and second only to Black Cat in my opinion, but still very different than the start of the series.
One of my favorite scenes is Kuwabara freaking out when Yusuke dies and then the two scumbag teachers getting svolded by the principal for making fun of Kuwabara.

You are my Black person. That episode is probably the most important of the entire series. It being left out of the Netflix shitdaptation is a tragedy.

Also worth noting that the comic started out with Yusuke going on ghost adventures and helping people before it turned into tournament fighting, rather than the show which veers right into action almost immediately.
