Have a college degree, work really hard for a few years to establish a good reputation, slowly move into a position where performance isn’t measurable (ie not a sales or dev role), take ownership of some group or process that pretty much runs itself already and viola, a six-figure annual welfare check

Alternatively, be really good at sales or coding and hit your targets in two hours of work per day

          This
I used to sell office suite software that was just dummy-proof Microsoft office. I didn't get marked by daily sales or calls or anything like that, the day to day wasn't measured, it was just monthly reports. I'd work once a month for around 5 hours cold calling companies in every state capital until I sold around 6 suites, which was one above the monthly goal. I'd file the report at the end of the month and I'd get a commission check for $4k for the sales (each suite was around $10k). Shit was chill.
I fricked it up though. I had a month where I was greedy and very motivated and worked basically everyday for a month and got a crazy number of sales, it was over 100 sales. The huge number caused an immediate concern that I was faking the sales, which opened an investigation that revealed how fricked up the position and the commissions structure was. I got the huge ass check for almost $80k and got let go. They moved to advertisement instead of salespeople.
Now I sell fricking insurance and it fricking sucks.

I still have like 20k in my bank account, I bought a used car and invested some of it but I definitely should have looked into franchising the insurance company I work for, I could've been my boss and had 4 employees working to make me money everyday. My boss only signs shit and pops in an hour a day. It only takes 60k to open one of these places, fricking bullshit hindsight.

This shit only lasts for a year tops, MAYBE 2 if you're a senior. At some point, some freshie MBA up top gets hired and wants to prove himself by cutting down on inefficiencies. Usually happens during a down business cycle.

Said MBA is usually pretty moronic though and can't tell who's doing their jobs and who isn't, so they usually end up firing just as many hard working employees as they do lazy people like OP. Nonetheless, if you aren't taking advantage of the free time on a side hustle/starting a business/keeping up to date on latest tech and skills, then no it's not sustainable and you'll prob be fricked like this guy

I wonder, do indians born stateside get those jobs too or is it only H1B visa jeets?

            Anonymous

Mostly H1-B because they’ll work for much cheaper and they use kinship networks to get each other jobs. But they’ll always hire a jeet before anyone else, whether they’re born in the states or india. Completely illegal of course but the DOJ doesn’t care unless white people do it

          Anonymous

This is so true it's crazy. They intentionally hire indians on visa bc they pay them so cheap and they stay in line. I was heavily involved in hiring for my department at one of the bigger tech companies and those frickers would fake interview people just to put up the guise of having a fair interview process. Another immigrant joined the team and when they told him to pick out an american citizen to be the faux applicant he was like wtf. After that they rotated him off the team. That's just my experience but I've heard very similar stories from other tech companies and swe teams.

its more of a reflection of how much fluff bullshit goes in to office jobs. but there are busy periods too in most of them. imo it's fair. making people go in to the office is humiliation tier. the only people who enjoy going in are boomers and sociopaths.. and even then a lot of boomers I've met in office work are really enjoying being remote.

      Anonymous

No one sane wants full 5 days a week at the office again. The only ones that do are

      a. middle managers that used to spend half their time hovering over desks talking because they didn't actually have any work to do
      b. execs

And the only reason execs want you back is because they know people working remote have an easier time job hunting.

I work at a fortune 100. They told us we were going hybrid a year ago, and so many devs quit the company canceled the plans about 3 weeks later. I'd quit if they actually went through with it, however my old office is now a call center and there isn't even floorspace to bring me back.

Hard work. Worked my butt off in phone sales for 3 years dealing with all kinds of degenerate filth (both sales reps and clientele), got a promotion into a community engagement role that I did for a year, and then killed it and got recommended my by boss for another corporate role in the department I work now.

I do actually do a reasonable amount of work, probably 4 hours a day. But my work is answering maybe 6 client emails a day, 30 minutes to an hour on video meets with directors and execs at companies I’m trying to work with, and then a few hours of cold email outreach from LinkedIn crawls to get my foot in the door of HR and IT departments. Best job I’ve ever had.

110k salary, 4 weeks PTO (not that I use it, but it’s nice to get paid out each year), insane health coverage. They pay for anything I could want under lifestyle spending. They paid for my AC, my home office, my cialis I use to frick my girlfriend better, my herman millie chair, it’s basically limitless.

Stressful job in a way though. I’m perpetually afraid of layoffs and worry about finding another fully WFH job that’s this good.

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time, as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door, I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads to my house, which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshall’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.

I then log on to the internet, which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on Cinemaphile about how the government doesn't help me and can't do anything right.

For what we sent to Ukraine in the past year, we could have built a NYC-tier transit system in every major US city.

I also am very comfortable living frugally so anything more than what I make currently would be nice but basically Im perfectly happy with what I have

I can honestly absolutely see why they want to fill this profession with pajeets but by the time they lower the standards enough for them to get their tickets, I'll have cashed out.

Not any time soon, that's for sure, but in about five years my mortgage will be up again and I'll probably just pay off what's left with my savings, take the penalty and then have an extra 1000 in my pocket every month to start stacking again. I figure it'll take them at least ten years to pajeet this job down to poverty wages, assuming the supply of pajeets doesn't get shut off

    product manager != project manager

    both have no real skills
product managers have stupid ideas they impose on you
project managers are basically your secretary and can be useful when they're competent (but it takes them 1 year to get there and they change every 6 months)

      Anonymous

Can confirm. Used to be a Project Manager. I always struggled at the start but by the end I learned enough to contribute. You learn pretty quick that you are only going to be as good as the best dev who actually likes you.

Can also confirm that 90% of Project Managers are actually fricking moronic and don't work hard enough to learn anything about the business or technology to be useful in any capacity. The ones that do, are actually worth something.

In my last gig, I was effectively the business stakeholder who had a PM assigned to my initiative, and this woman was so useless that it was actually a large component of why I left the company.

Since COVID I've been working 95% from home. Used to hate it - now I love it.

Worked a couple different roles at a bank during Covid. One of them was legit so easy I could get away with doing less than an hour of work a day and get by just fine. Had some other roles at the bank before I left where I was working from home but the hours were grueling.

Now i'm in SaaS on track to make 120K this year, go into the office once every three weeks, and don't really need to work too hard. Best ratio of time vs compensation I've ever had. It's almost too good to be true.

    >my old boss manages to destroy an entire season run of irreplaceable product before I even leave the building
    >at janitor job knock out the 2 year program in 1 year while not even "hired" full time
    >have position eliminated
    >have to fill in everyday while also working in a shipping and receiving warehouse
    >finally get hired full time as a union janitor
    >making 50-60k a year because of bonuses and tips
