Marketing is just one small part of the picture. The bigger deal is opportunity costs, they didn't just lose money because the movie underperformed, you also have to account for the fact that $200 million could have gone to something else that would have made money as well.

Oh it lost way more money than that. Lets look at the most conservative numbers
    >200 million budget
    >100 million marketing budget
    >50% of box office gross
best possible scenario Lightyear lost over 200 million dollars.
now lets look at some realistic numbers
    >200 budget
    >200 million marketing budget
    >45% of box office gross
the film has made just 85 million dollars. Disney just took a 300 million plus hit from lightyear.

The point is that the fact that Titanic costed the same to make than the Jimmy Neutron-tier CGI they use in Marvel capeshit is outrageous.

            Anonymous

This was sequence done in about one week because of last minute rewrites. That's the main problem with modern CGI, what used to be afforded over a year of post-production time now gets weeks to months.

        Anonymous

And that is with very little digital work involved, Titanic was one of the last films to be mostly practical effects, they actually built replicas of different parts of the ship in Rosarito and tied them together with massive paintings for the background, they painstakinly recreated the furniture and rooms, they even had the china remade just for that one scene in which it all falls off the rack.

The idea that all that work costed less than the paint-by-numbers green screen shit Hollywood does now is just asinine, there is a massive money pit in film making where a ton of unaccounted money just disappears.

      >how the frick is the budget for a cartoon $200m

      1. Voice actors ask for millions.
      2. Animation is time consuming and it's Union work in USA.
      3. 3D animation is getting more and more detailed over time which makes it take longer.
      4. 100 million seems to be the minimum you can make a major hollywood film now. That Licorice Pizza film cost 40 million.

Combine it's very easy to have bloated projects at the Disney level.

      Hollywood accounting.

"Hollywood accounting" is just creating shell companies to trade money with each other so that you can officially say a project didn't earn much so that you can screw people out of paying a percentage. The system always falls apart when challenged in the courts. And critically the overall project still earns or loses money.

      Money laundering

Doesn't matter. Disney still has war chests of billions, and a small oversight like this underrated film won't tank them like you incels have daily wet dreams of. The only reason the film """bombed""" was because it was made for millennials who grew up watching Toy Story as kids, but it didn't cater enough to Gen Z as much is all. There's no /misc/ conspiracy here, people. Pixar has had some duds before, but they'll always continue producing the finest quality imaginable, like always. Encanto made money but it was insincere pandering designed to cash in on the success of Coco, Coco had its roots in legitimate Mexican folklore, there is nothing in Encanto that is particularly Colombian in nature, it's just a generic fairytale coated in brown.

Encanto took off because of the soundtrack, the Bruno song was the biggest viral hit from a Disney movie since Let it Go.

        Anonymous

Encanto was such an odd story, its family but everyone has superpowers, and the house is magic but the story is solidly about family and the superhero powers dont really matter.

why not just cut the super heroics and make a family story, perhaps set it back in the war/civil insurrection that the parents went through and you would have a more serious setting like say Mulan.

No, the production budget is just what went into making the movie. Marketing is not included as that spending is done by an entirely different department and so is tracked differently. Also generally done in a way that makes it difficult to tract exactly what was spent to promote each individual movie.

You forgot to factor in the hidden costs (merchandising + advertisements + licensing to theaters + overseas marketing). The real budget is most likely around $500M - $600M, which they will NOT reach given the circumstances of the current box office right now (Top Gun 2, Jurassic World 3, and Minions 2). In other words, Disney fricked up, and I wouldn't be surprised if Pixar is never allowed to release another theatrical film again & goes exclusively streaming thereafter.

Double production budget for break even, probably like triple production budget for where they'd want to be in terms of profit. Also after the first two weeks or so in theaters, the studios takes far less of the cut from ticket sales. So Disney has gotten as much as they can, the theaters take almost all of it now.
