What was up with all the Star Trek references?
wut? there was one TOS poster in the background for like a minute
To represent the transitional period of the time when white and blacks could actually be free to be around each other. Elvis and Star Trek showed America that there could be racial equality.
it was Kubrick's way of telling us he was involved in Elvis' kidnapping by aliens
Austin Butler is great, but everything else is just mediocre or bad tbh. Still a very solid movie, but should have had another 15 minutes minimum left on the editing floor.
>I'LL BE SO LONELY I COULD DIE
Phenomenal movie made by white people about the beauty and talent of white people, while exposing the ruthless manipulation of the name stealing puppet masters. Tom Hanks wore a big prosthetic nose and Baz made sure to capture him in side profile half the time, while demanding songs about Santa Claus.
>Phenomenal movie made by white people about the beauty and talent of white people
he was literally one of the first documented wiggers wanting to be a blackie so bad
He made black music marketable.Dude had pipes too.
this. The original wigger.
was Al Jolson. Sinatra too. Do some research.
Black music is just german music+christcuck music+le blacl charisma
>Le whyte ppl are bad
>black people were good bois
>Out of place modern day rap and pop music
The movie was fricking gay, but it gets extremely good at the Christmas special and onwards, I'd even go as far and say that it was kino. Everything before that was utter fricking shit. I was close to walking out when the rap music started. Austin Butler played the part well. He's a good actor.
I was legit shocked a guy from fricking Aliens in the Attic was playing Elvis so well.
>>Out of place modern day rap and pop music
What the frick?
They could've just put in some leitmotifs, some strings, maybe some soul/blues music or some shit. Putting in modern music was really jarring, even that awful fricking "remix".
Yeah if they wanted to appriciate the black artists from that time period just play some blues/soul/jazz. Anything but fricking rap.
The movie has two rap songs that are jarring lyrics out of place. One of them plays when Elvis is going into a black nightclub surrounded by black people, it was kind of insulting.
>Iluv black ppl, in fact I got a friend that is black
geez they are so hamfisted sometimes. sounds like that morales thor dustup.
BB King was friends with Elvis though you fricking larper.
Certified kino, Baz’s best kino since Moulin Rogue. The editing was so mental, those with weak beta eyeballs prolly won’t be able to keep up.
it occupied perhaps a minute and a half of it’s over 2 1/2 hour run time. That is what we non autists call a nitpick.
>Cinemaphile
>non-autists
You're in the wrong place, friend.
you clearly don't know what nitpick means
It's a signature of Baz's. He did this shit with Great Gadsby
kinda like that scene in Django Unchained
Got chills at the end when they played Unchained Melody.
I agree. First two acts were fricking dogshit and I thought about walking out too. but the film picks up when he does his comeback tours and that's when the movie becomes kino.
>rap music
racist
I'm pretty sure Tom Hanks is personally making all of these Elvis shill threads here.
Elvis was a queer fricking wigger homosexual worshiped by weirdos and boomers.
go back to your capeshit thread
I'm a trans btw.
>shitting on a white skinned icon
Please post your hand.
Hail to the King BAYBEE
it was too long
It was really fricking long, but the best scene was If I Can Dream.
The modern rap and pop remixes were fricking awful, tho.
I liked when Tom Hanks was a fat sweaty monster like the twins in Nothing But Trouble.
>Tom Hanks
I'll pass.
yeah, that has me on the fence too
Hanks was really good at playing an awful little huckster.
Best scene for me was the 'trouble' perfomance with the riot. Frick this movie was kino.
I hate how fake and gay modern films (and tv shows) look. No warmth or soul. High resolution digital was a mistake.
Correct
Can I pirate it yet?
“Baz” Luhrmann is the single worst director working today and I refuse to watch anything made by him.
Only correct opinion. I hate the piece of shit so much
The scene where he calls out Colonel Parker from on stage. And every single performance was spot-on perfect. He captured the energy and stage presence of Elvis across every period of his career. Also:
>Oscar Status: Fricking locked.
Holy shit.
Agreed. Austin was phenomenal
>Oscar Status: Fricking locked
White, young, straight, non-israeli, male, winning an Oscar
What year do you think this is ?
Just wait.
Hanks could get best supporting.
Probably Elvis going to Parker in hospital in Vegas to end their business and Parker turning it around into a deal to perform at the International hotel exclusively for 5 years. Vegas as a whole was pretty kino.
I remember the dread I felt over the entire thing.
Going to see it tomorrow in IMAX. But hopefully will not disappoint.
WRONG KID DIED
>Elvis Presley, "the king", was the first big scam of rock and roll, and the model for all that followed (Beatles above all). A mediocre singer, he was, more than anything else, a brilliant marketing gimmick: a white man who not only sang black songs (as Bill Haley had done the year prior), but sang and moved like a black man (in particular copying the style on the stage of Bo Diddley), exuding animalistic sensuality and posing as a rebel hooligan (while in reality it was just a telegenic face).
>Born in Tupelo (Mississippi), and arrived in Memphis in 1948, Presley had the sole merit of entering the right studio at the right time. In 1954 Sam Phillips (owner of Sun Records in Memphis), who had smelled the air of change, decided to make him a "black white" (i.e. a white rhythm’n'blues singer), taking advantage of his vocal register as a "shouter "and his aptitude for movement on stage, alongside a respectable rhythm section (Bill Black on bass and Scotty Moore on guitar). The following year the RCA invested a capital to promote it on a national scale, guessing the right moment (the newborn rock and roll and Bill Haley now consumed) and the right character (the ideal star appeal: young, slender, handsome and dynamic).
>Over the next three years, manager Tom Parker provided him with tailor-made songs and films, and carefully organized the cult of his myth: the Presley hairstyle (the so-called "ducktail" cut), the Presley-style moves, the sideburns, the black leather dress, the "blue suede" shoes. [Finally, in 1977, the RCA advertising machine managed its death by dusting off the old myth, perfectly in line with the revival of the 1950s in vogue in that year].
This Guido's quite the homosexual if he legit wrote this shit.
he's right and you know it, you uneducated dumbshit
It's true that Elvis the singer was made by the people around him, but it would've fallen apart if the King didn't have raw fricking talent. Feels like Guido's trying to discredit him because of Parker.
he had no talent, none of what he did was original or innovative, much like Beatles he was pushed by the media and producers, literally Coldplay or Billie Eilish of his time
we get it, you’re a huuuge Sophie fan. Why don’t you do what he did and become a statistic, mr tinnitus.
>he had no talent
Trips wasted on some homosexual, very sad. Elvis is one of the greats. He could've become greater sans Parker, but alas he only has legendary status.
If Colonel israelite would have let Elvis tour the world Elvis would have had a much longer, happier, successful life. He became a superstar with Parker, he could have been a world superstar with someone else
At least Parker let him have some dignity, and his actual skills as a musician and showman were able to shine through regardless of how shitty his life had become. He deserved a lot better, though.
>he feel for the Scaruffi meme
back to Cinemaphile
>Elvis
>Mediocre singer
You would have to be braindead and without taste to think that
I hate Scaruffi and Cinemaphile posters so much.
>the Beatles
I hope he realizes they were literally inspired by Buddy Holly
and the Everly's
those 2 way more than elvis
Show me the footage of Bo Diddly moving like Elvis. Furthermore, give me one example of any music coming out of Africa sounding anything remotely like blues, gospel, r&b or rock n roll.
How was the Unchained Melody scene?
It was beautiful. They played the original, just as they should have. I cried.
They used a lot of the actual footage for that scene, and well placed within the film's original work. The actor was very good throughout, but great choice to let the audience see the real Elvis for that moment.
it's all just a white guilt trip
A shame they never used The Wonder of You as an end credits song or in any scenes in general.
The Graceland sets were dead on, down to the furniture and little details. I was sad there wasn't a scene set in the Jungle Room though. I gotta go back on another pilgrimage bros.
9/10, other than 40 seconds of bad rap remixes it was perfect.
for me it was the Christmas special stuff
>here comes santy claus!
“Baz” Luhrmann is the single worst director working today and I refuse to watch anything made by him.
PRISCILLA WAS 14 WHEN SHE MARRIED HIM, YOU SICK FRICK
>"She was the pretty teenage daughter of an officer at the base..."
I had a little chuckle, I was wondering if the movie was gonna make a big stink about it, this relatively vague one liner was the only mention of it
2nd.
he tells her he'll be 50 and she'll be 40. big age gap implications.
Based Elvis
>Gladys makes Elvis one of his beloved peanut butter banana and bacon sandwiches
>the moment Elvis turns his back Vernon takes the plate and starts eating the sandwich
Subtle. Frick you Vernon you were just as guilty as the Colonel
>Eminem song over the credits
I felt so sorry for those poor boomers in the audience.
Sad honestly. Like why would they even do that for fricks sake.
Could've played "My way" of his hawaii concert. Fricking homosexuals
The director apparently thinks he's cool by doing shit like that, or that's what i heard. Could have left it out for his other shitty flicks.
Did they really play an Eminem song for the credit? No fricking way. I left the moment the lights came on. How the frick can you go from a powerful performance of Unchained melody to a fricking homosexual wigger rapping?
They played Elvis for the first half of the credits, and then this at the end:
Holy fricking cringe
Didn't Eminem used to hate being compared to Elvis? Fricking lol
Eminem is literally a sellout moron now.
He was pretty based during his Slim shady days
Eminem is so sad now
>this is a serious ad
Wtf it's real? Kekekekekekekekeke
it's like everyone forgot Without Me
>Though I'm not the first king of controversy
>I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley
>To do black music so selfishly
>And use it to get myself wealthy
could be the thesis of the film
weirdly alienating to older audience and flavoured with anti-racism. directing and narration sequences with tom hanks sucked hard. butler was an amazing elvis though.
Is Suspicious Minds in the film? Favourite song of his
Yeah.
Yes, and holy frick is it good.
My favorite part was when the film was saying Elvis is essentially a black man and the only reason he got popular is because women want the "forbidden fruit" or in other words BBC.
No they wanted BEC, but I’m sure they’d take the Big Bopper wiener as well.
Gotta remember that the story's told by a guy who didn't know shit about music, but knew the effects he had on the audience.
Does Tom Hanks actually say the words "BBC" or " big black wiener"? Someone post a clip.
Tom Hanks stares directly into the camera, and says big black wiener at least a hundred times. Sometimed he wasn't even in the scene, but they would cut to him saying big black wiener.
Starting coughing from e-girlng
My favorite was the time he said it David Pumpkins-ing across over the top of a scene.
are you fricking moronic? This is your brain on imageboards.
It’s so bs. Elvis was a legendary musician, who will now be reduced to Black person copycat because of cucks like Baz Luhrman
>who will now be reduced to Black person copycat because of cucks like Baz Luhrman
i mean, in a way, he kind of was
Those that saw it: how good was Austin? I’ve seen a lot of people exaggerating and memeing. Is this really an Oscar worthy performance?
Dude was solid, good pick considering how much of a no-name he is.
He was okay but no scene seemed to last more than 90 seconds. All the notable political deaths are basically layups for his character and they fall flat.
Solid but not Oscar worthy imo. Lots of posing that felt like other Elvis impersonators. Voice was perfect.
Butler had more opportunity to showcase his range in the latter half of the movie, but I think his performance’s potential was hindered by the story since it was told from Parker’s subjective viewpoint. The audience is on the outside looking in, and Elvis is intentionally still an enigma by the end of the film.
>show mom trailer
>she was huge Elvis fan when young and wants to see it badly
>take her to see it
>she cries several times
>it’s absolute kino
Fantastic movie, only demerits I had were the offputting rap played (even though short it was memorable in a bad way) and how it felt like they played too much on the white/black stuff
What about the non american audience (me) ? Will I enjoy it? I really like 50's america and know a little about elvis. His music was good
The movie is a slog fest with a bunch of garbage political takes. The movie picks up in the last hour when you get to see old elvis and that's when kino begins. It's crazy how much different the movie becomes when it gets to that point, it's like it was filmed by a different director.
You will enjoy it. The film does a good job showcasing Elvis’ impact on popular culture, plus the set design and costumes are a lot of fun.
I liked the butler joke
I just got back from this film and it was fricking amazing. Also there were some older women in the audience whooping and clapping during the big musical segments, was pretty funny. Wouldn't have shocked me if they probably saw Elvis when they were younger.
a few years back they rereleased that one concert of his in theaters. I went to see it with my fiancé. this raggedly old b***h next to us was singing along with most of the songs. I shushed her several times and she hissed "don't you fricking tell me what to do."
Based granny
>she hissed "don't you fricking tell me what to do."
Eternally based Granny, get emasculated.
Just came back from the movies. Elvis personality gas been downloaded. How do I got about Elvismaxxing?
Wear lots of pink, which should be easy as a pale dusty pink is absolutely on trend.
Is this the best Baz Luhrmann film?
Yes.
So the choices are this or capeshit? Great, good to know cinema is actually dead and I can stop holding out hope.
>the choices are good cinema or shit films
Damn okay
there's also top gun, also kino
Eminem was the natural evolution of Elvis, it's not an unfair comparison.
>Elvis
>Eminem
>Eilish
All right, bros, what's going to be the name of the next baby faced super star?
>he forgot Englebert Humperdink
>people dissing Eminem
lol
only if it shows him how he only dates black women but doesnt have sex cuz hes afraid of germies
lol they gave elvis eyeliner and a mesh shirt to make him seem gay. Everything he did was stolen from black people. White people evil. Whites all evil. Tom Hanks gives the most bizarre performance I've ever seen. In a movie about Elvis Presley they are playing contemporary hip hop music. What a steaming pile of revisionist fantasy this was. Lets make a movie about Elvis that Elvis fans will hate and shoehorn in every possible race baiting thing we can that will be a classic
Yes I do only know the song Burning Love and that's it's an extremely basic Elvis song to like but I love it regardless.
My grand Uncle thought he was Elvis, and Napoleon, and his favorite thing to do during the last 8 months he was alive was shove lil smokies up his ass and sing 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' every fricking minute.
looks like la bamba guy
random sidenote, lou diamond philips is a kino actor and deserves more recognition
Just finished seeing this in theaters. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
>before seeing movie
Who's this nobody they got to play Elvis? He's going to suck.
>after seeing movie
This guy was amazing
so what's the definitive Elvis bio? film or book idc
Kurt Russel / John Carpenter ELVIS
>still no chuck berry movie
whats going on here
The 68 comeback special scenes were solid. Vegas performance scenes were pretty fricking good. This was a great film.
Does Johnny Cash or any other musicians make an appearance?
Hank Snow does early on.
was tom hanks supposed to be a greedy israelite or an evil nazi?
The Ultimate Evil. He was Dutch.
Nailed it.
Give it to me straight boys. I wanna see this to support my brother Elvis, but I can’t stand social justice shit. How much racebaiting is in this film?
None at all. It's a good movie. Elvis is depicted as having a strong, loving relationship with his musical roots and the black community.
I mean Elvis has always had roots in black music and gospel. He is portrayed as he was very faithfully.
The cringiest race part comes from the colonel frothing at the mouth when he hears Elvis is white. He keeps saying to himself "he's whiiite". Which is fine if you understand the context but I always see things through the lens of a normie as well and I could see it looking weird.
I guarantee it's gonna get taken out of context soon.
You will love it. It's extremely fairhful to the King.
If you're white you honestly owe it to yourself to see this film.
but what if i'm Italian?
I'll allow it because I love spaghetti.
Goddam right.
>Hayride scene in slomo where colonel talks about Elvis being forbidden fruit
>every subsequent singing scene
>the Hollywood sign scene
>the blackpill moment where colonel sells him out to the hotel people
>when Elvis calls him a debt ridden alien live at the concert
>the ending where he whispers "I will always love you"
The moment a good quality rip its available someone needs to do an edit of kino without the rap parts
someone should edit the movie like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Jd9AmepgdM
>that scene where Elvis brainstorms a new song with the orchestra and the background singers
holy kino
It was better when it stopped focusing on Tom Hanks shitting up the screen.
What was the deal with his phobia of germs from sex? Did some sick pentacostal shit happen when he was a kid?
This movie was based as frick.
What are some real Elvis movies I should watch? Old concerts/interviews etc
Viva Las Vegas
See the film you dips
>rap songs
not watching
Really sold by the other Elvis fans in here appearing to get a big kick out of it, I must see this. I wonder if we'll ever get the longer cut? Longer films aren't better films but if this thing is detailed and faithful I'd like to see as much of it as possible.
Exactly how I feel.
The only thing I wish we’d seen more of was the 15 cities in 15 nights tour. The craziness of that kind of road show, Elvis giving it everything at each performance and then getting sedated by the doctor so he can sleep until the next one. It’s crazy and cruel and drove him into the ground, but it’s something I wish I could have seen to appreciate what the man went through to give the people entertainment.
Probably in the extended cut I imagine.
I just saw it. Never really listened to Elvis, but this movie and the guy playing him really brought him alive. I see the appeal now. Pacing in the first half of the movie was way too fast, as if they were trying to complete a checklist of events or something. Many great scenes of course. Just didn't have much to hold on to or get invested in for the first half. Second half was excellent though and really gave Elvis a grounding in a certain time and place. I also like that the movie didn't try and reveal Elvis, instead celebrated the weirdness and mystery of him.
Glad you enjoyed it, fren. My dad was a lifelong fan of the King, so this movie was a real treat for me.
So how pozzed is it?
Try reading the thread next time.
>pozzed
take your meds, cracker
I never knew Elvis had a twin brother who died at birth. I knew he loved his mother but it put into context how protective she was of him and why she’d fear some woman getting her claws in her baby boy.
>40 minutes into the movie and this starts playing
Baz knows how to appeal to anyone under 40
The ending has both fake and real footage of fat Elvis
That surprised me
>Elvis shooting out TVs in his Vegas penthouse
did he really do that?
He shoot his televisions at Graceland, don’t know about Vegas but he could have shot them there too. I’m disappointed we didn’t get Elvis meeting Nixon or Elvis and his tailor designing his Vegas stage show outfits. We got the backstory to the early years and the leather jacket, but the Vegas jumpsuit Elvis is its own iconic entity that deserved time
>No Elvis/Nixon meeting
shame, would have liked to see how Baz tackled that one
Hey I loved La Bamba
Austin Butler going to join Tom and Timothee as the holy zoomer trinity of actors ?
So what's the best version of the '68 special?
why would I watch a movie about famous person who died long ago?
To understand what it was that made them special. And Elvis was. He really, really was.
