Phenomenal movie made by white people about the beauty and talent of white people, while exposing the ruthless manipulation of the name stealing puppet masters. Tom Hanks wore a big prosthetic nose and Baz made sure to capture him in side profile half the time, while demanding songs about Santa Claus.

    WRONG KID DIED

  20. 2 years ago

    >Elvis Presley, "the king", was the first big scam of rock and roll, and the model for all that followed (Beatles above all). A mediocre singer, he was, more than anything else, a brilliant marketing gimmick: a white man who not only sang black songs (as Bill Haley had done the year prior), but sang and moved like a black man (in particular copying the style on the stage of Bo Diddley), exuding animalistic sensuality and posing as a rebel hooligan (while in reality it was just a telegenic face).
    >Born in Tupelo (Mississippi), and arrived in Memphis in 1948, Presley had the sole merit of entering the right studio at the right time. In 1954 Sam Phillips (owner of Sun Records in Memphis), who had smelled the air of change, decided to make him a "black white" (i.e. a white rhythm’n'blues singer), taking advantage of his vocal register as a "shouter "and his aptitude for movement on stage, alongside a respectable rhythm section (Bill Black on bass and Scotty Moore on guitar). The following year the RCA invested a capital to promote it on a national scale, guessing the right moment (the newborn rock and roll and Bill Haley now consumed) and the right character (the ideal star appeal: young, slender, handsome and dynamic).
    >Over the next three years, manager Tom Parker provided him with tailor-made songs and films, and carefully organized the cult of his myth: the Presley hairstyle (the so-called "ducktail" cut), the Presley-style moves, the sideburns, the black leather dress, the "blue suede" shoes. [Finally, in 1977, the RCA advertising machine managed its death by dusting off the old myth, perfectly in line with the revival of the 1950s in vogue in that year].

Solid but not Oscar worthy imo. Lots of posing that felt like other Elvis impersonators. Voice was perfect.
Butler had more opportunity to showcase his range in the latter half of the movie, but I think his performance’s potential was hindered by the story since it was told from Parker’s subjective viewpoint. The audience is on the outside looking in, and Elvis is intentionally still an enigma by the end of the film.

The 68 comeback special scenes were solid. Vegas performance scenes were pretty fricking good. This was a great film.

Give it to me straight boys. I wanna see this to support my brother Elvis, but I can’t stand social justice shit. How much racebaiting is in this film?

      Anonymous

None at all. It's a good movie. Elvis is depicted as having a strong, loving relationship with his musical roots and the black community.

I mean Elvis has always had roots in black music and gospel. He is portrayed as he was very faithfully.

The cringiest race part comes from the colonel frothing at the mouth when he hears Elvis is white. He keeps saying to himself "he's whiiite". Which is fine if you understand the context but I always see things through the lens of a normie as well and I could see it looking weird.

I guarantee it's gonna get taken out of context soon.

    >every subsequent singing scene
    >the Hollywood sign scene
    >the blackpill moment where colonel sells him out to the hotel people
    >when Elvis calls him a debt ridden alien live at the concert
    >the ending where he whispers "I will always love you"

Really sold by the other Elvis fans in here appearing to get a big kick out of it, I must see this. I wonder if we'll ever get the longer cut? Longer films aren't better films but if this thing is detailed and faithful I'd like to see as much of it as possible.

The only thing I wish we’d seen more of was the 15 cities in 15 nights tour. The craziness of that kind of road show, Elvis giving it everything at each performance and then getting sedated by the doctor so he can sleep until the next one. It’s crazy and cruel and drove him into the ground, but it’s something I wish I could have seen to appreciate what the man went through to give the people entertainment.

Probably in the extended cut I imagine.

I just saw it. Never really listened to Elvis, but this movie and the guy playing him really brought him alive. I see the appeal now. Pacing in the first half of the movie was way too fast, as if they were trying to complete a checklist of events or something. Many great scenes of course. Just didn't have much to hold on to or get invested in for the first half. Second half was excellent though and really gave Elvis a grounding in a certain time and place. I also like that the movie didn't try and reveal Elvis, instead celebrated the weirdness and mystery of him.

I never knew Elvis had a twin brother who died at birth. I knew he loved his mother but it put into context how protective she was of him and why she’d fear some woman getting her claws in her baby boy.

    >Elvis shooting out TVs in his Vegas penthouse
    did he really do that?

      Anonymous

He shoot his televisions at Graceland, don’t know about Vegas but he could have shot them there too. I’m disappointed we didn’t get Elvis meeting Nixon or Elvis and his tailor designing his Vegas stage show outfits. We got the backstory to the early years and the leather jacket, but the Vegas jumpsuit Elvis is its own iconic entity that deserved time
