And the city fell in the middle of a military campaign that continued unimpeded for four more years hundreds of miles away, with no one even mentioning it, not even when the fricking president came in to give a speech to boost up the troops' morale?

They mention that the lakes are drying up and that there's widespread corruption, but that's not enough to make an entire nation, not one as populated and powerful as the NCR, in less than two decades. Either way, there were so many doubts about the Mojave campaign because they thought it was unnecessary and stretching everything too thin. The problems was that it never seemed to end, but at the end of NV it does end.
There are two options, if the NCR gets Vegas they just won a sixth state to their union, complete with a new source of energy (again, frick cold fusion for rendering the entire NV conflict moot) and clean water, and an entire city, which would palliate a lot of their problems.
If they did lose, they'd stop being so stretched out and would be able to put order within their own frontiers and prepare for a Legion assault. It is also established that the Legion doesn't have enough strength left to attack California without collapsing, so they are at an impasse.
That's why I'm skeptical about the collapse of the NCR.

Fallout 1 was only set ~90 years after the bombs fell, so it makes a little more sense.
When they changed everything to 200 years later for every game thereafter, they kept the same aesthetic.
They literally should have just made Fallout 3 a prequel or a midquel. There's no actual reason to touch the post Fallout 2 part of the timeline, unless you're going to engage with the idea that time moves on.
Funnily enough fallout 76 takes place 25 years after the bombs and everything is beautiful and there's massive rebuilding going on.

Fallout 2 did it best, as it has primal tribes, sprawling city states with differing technological levels, villages etc as you would expect if there is no central governinh body and distribution of technology. The only thing that doesnt make sense to me is the time scale where almost for sure some bigger parties would have overtaken large parts of the country. Maybe you could explain that with the hostility of the waste land and constant wars between factions. NV was a bit more realistic in that sense with the ncr and the legion
Bethesda just love their eternal wasteland. If every game was like a couple years apart i wouldn't mind. It's what the Metro series does. And, in that context, maybe a full on reboot of the franchise wouldn't be such a bad idea. But when you look at the fact that in those 210 years since the bombs fell civilization hasn't really progressed at all(people still living in shacks, eating dirt, don't have plumbing and using makeshift batteries for local power) there are only 2 possible explanations.
One would be that the company has decided that this is what Fallout is all about; an untamed and lawless wilderness for the player to frick around in. Two, it's just too much work for the developers to actually implement a progressing world. They would have to add, at least locally, law enforcement, vehicles/roads, some way of long distance communication, utilities, fix the holes in their walls and roofs - but most importantly - the people would have to actually pick up a broom and start cleaning up.
The whole world still feels very much like it's been 30 or maybe 50 years since the war and everybody is still sifting through the ruins of civilization struggling to barely survive. I'm not saying there should be highrise buildings and fully functioning public transportation but a basic, at least local, economy and government would absolutely be in the cards - for fricks sakes, they are still using bottle caps as currency.

The two original Fallouts as well as NV do a better job of depicting the world 200 years later. Go play Fallout 3. Everything is a radioactive beige shithole. There is practically nothing colorful. It's a cartoon version of post-apoc. Setting aside the actual plausibility of this, just from an aesthetic standpoint, it was so bad that they finally had to release some DLC with lush vegetation just to fix the punishing drab ugliness of a game people would spend 100+ hours with.
Like it or not, this game is a legacy of that in the sense that it has to include a bunch of dumb shit that doesn't make any plausible sense.

That's why you have to exterminate all raiders. Which is what Kimball did prior to NVs, and what the NCR were doing during Fallout 2. They carried out a campaign of Manifest Destiny eradicating raider gangs to the point that the Khanks, the Jackals and Vipers were barely clinging on. Caesar did the same with the tribals, and even then they were fighting off raider gangs such as the 80s all the way in Arizona and near Utah.
Fallout 1 and 2 are full of pre-war houses full of trash in them. Literally rotten mattresses, old cardboard boxes, junk on the floor, junk on the streets, old cars littering the streets. Not all settlements in them grow their own crops either. Not by a long shot. They trade with farming communities to get food.
We see agriculture in the Fallout TV show, so we know it's a thing in the wasteland. It doesn't need to show up at every fricking settlement. This isn't Fallout 4 where the player has planted every settlement full of crops for the sake of convenience.

What you will have in a post-apoc scenario where humans are still active is A LOT of wrecked micro-climates and localized disaster zones. That's one thing the show kind of gets right, even if by accident. You could be in a lush wooded area and then walking through sand dunes in the distance of a few miles. Soil conservation alone is a major problem even today when it's left up to moronic thirdies. Without functioning governments/society you will have pockets of ingenuity that thrive and then vanish within seas of persistent misery, incompetence, and collapse. In fact, that's basically the history of human civilization up until fairly recently.

Putting aside everything about the exchange making no sense at all the entire first episode just falls apart when you realize that Moldaver could and should have just gone straight into Vault 33 using Rose's Pip-Boy.
These writers are shit. They tend to work with an idea in mind for the finale / reveal and very particular, specific emotional dynamics or even definite plot twist ideas. They then work backwards and reverse-engineer that scenario which then becomes the pilot and plot points of the show's episodes. That's mostly why the show became super fricking lead balloon of emotion in the finale while the rest of the show was not. It's also why a show written by a competent novelist that's adapted, like early Game of Thrones, will have a much more rewarding, consistent emotional weight. The writer has more blue-sky to explore the story as it goes as opposed to just concocting make-work to arrive at their pre-concieved ending conditions.

It's okay. If you've never played the games the changes to the lore won't seem as damming and you'll be able to focus on enjoying the character drama and world building. I hate what they've done to the setting in general and how it rewrites the previous games, but the show is fun. I enjoy it if I view it as an alternate continuity.
I'm not sure it's nearly as interesting a setting without some familiarity with the games. I'd imagine a good number of people are going register very reasonable problems with the show that they *assume* will be solved if they just play the games or watch them on YT or whatever but then realize that it doesn't actually fix anything, the show just is flawed and actually degrades the worldbuilding quite a lot, but "oh, i get the robot with the butler voice now"
If you are able to turn off your brain and just consume some fun slop, sure. Just don't try to think about anything you saw and it'll be fine.

I thought you turned into a ghoul over time due to low-level exposure but acute high-level exposure would always kill you. Seems like acute exposure + kinetic trauma (a la being in a bomb's blast radius) would just kill you even more.
Nobody knows how ghoulification works. Most of Vault 12 got turned into ghouls but then no one in Megaton are ghouls despite being close to a nuke.
I took it from bits of dialogue in reference to vault dwellers and how on the surface they would "eventually become one". Guess it could also be an infection or anything, really. Still, I don't get how her mom getting caught in the bomb would result in her being a ghoul, but one with half her face missing, unless she was already a ghoul and those who are already a ghoul become drug dependent outcasts. I don't get how she didn't die if she was in Sandy Shores when the bomb was dropped.
I think they're playing it as a combination of real radiation victims that got ghoulified so as to explain why she didn't die. Leaving her like that was absolutely insane, though, and they should have had her shot much earlier like Lucy did.

It's a cartoon, silly setting. It's a world you should take about a serious as Idiocracy's worldbuilding. The show does a TERRIBLE job of adapting this correctly and seems to want to play it straight 80% of the time in a play for some kind of post-post-post-ironic zoomer humor being drip-fed to the audience. If you try to make sense of it because you're trying to get into it as a serious post-apoc action story, you'll go mad.

They're different beasts and how we tackle them critically varies a lot. TLoU is an adaptation that can be directly compared to the source, whereas Fallout is a continuation and that makes any comparison or analysis a much more layered work. So it's unsurprising that there aren't more critical views on it.
The worst thing is they used the assault rifle from FO4. I guess it's a much simpler prop than a minigun.
