Just give it a quick try. The writing is really dry (author is inspired by Tolstoy) and most characters are 1D anime-tier plot vehicles. It's all about game of theory autism, soft sci-fi. Has plot holes but is miles ahead of Goyflix, of course.

Yes but they're also full of "chink shit".

Good overall. Good, imaginative plots and universe-building but weak characters and weaker dialog.

Just give them a try in order. You can stop at the end of the first or second book and feel satisfied with the ending.

The third book has a passive POV character and is full of borderline schizo ranting about humanity with a lot of fantasy-tier exposition dumps about the nature and current state of the fabric of the universe. It nicely completes the "lore" of the series and offers closure but the story is the weakest of the three and a lot is retreaded from the second book.

Yeah, the third book feels like it should have been appendix. It gives all the lore behind the universe and why it is the way it is, but its a very, very weak read from a narrative standpoint.

The first two books are much better than the third, but it's because the main characters of the third book are ridiculously passive and everything just happens around them. It helps that the second book ends in a way where you could conclude the series there.

Someone needs to edit the third book and take out like 75% of it and only leave the parts relevant to the overarching plot. Remove the brain boy,. remove the star, remove every fricking thing except Australia and the feats of Blue Space and Gravity.

I completely agree. And while the Portrait of Annihilation or whatever they call the solar system being made 2D is a kino sequence , everything following it sucks because the scale is just too ridiculous. Like the black hole gravity threads that frick up the speed of light if you set off an engine too close to them, and Star Girl missing Brain Boy because of this so they both settle for their silver medals. And the pocket dimension crap with Sophon. I did like that both humans and Trisolarians survived until the end of the Universe I guess, but it's all so enormous at that point that I stopped caring. The end of Dark Forest where the aliens kneel like Vegeta at /our chink/'s keikaku is the real end of the series for me.

I only kind of liked the end because it reminded me of pic related, which began my love of sci-fi. I kind of like the idea of a regular person outliving the universe and conversing with some all-powerful creator type thing. But yeah, much of the book after the 2D folding was just pointless wank and could be cut.

The third book ends with the Chinese lady and Sophon in a pocket dimension and they decide to leak matter back into the universe-at-large in the hope that there's a new big bang and the universe can restart again. The biggest book 1 plothole is the sophon in the sky (which is stated to be watered around the planet) not just blocking all sunlight for a week to freeze the humans. The only cope is that tri-lmaos were able to nuke their own rogue proton, so they must have assumed humans are capable of that as well.

That wasn't a rogue sophon in the book, it was a lower dimensional civilization that they accidentally unfolded into their dimension. Ohhh, okay. So the eye over earth wasn't evem a sophon. It just played on earth and went along for the ride there.

        >not just blocking all sunlight for a week to freeze the humans
Oh, I hadn't thought of that, yeah, that's another way the tri-lmaos could have dealt with the humans until their fleet reached the solar system.
Or the sophons could just fry every computer on earth (as the "You're Bugs" scene in the TV show clearly demonstrates, the tv sophons can mess with electronic devices), plunging humanity into a new dark age, and not have to worry about humans discovering some shit with the particle accelerators that might put them on par with or beyond tri-lmaos technology.
        The TV show is moronic.

The first volume tries its best to respect the "hard science fiction" side of things, the folding/unfolding of protons to make sophons is a big extrapolation of what we think is e stablished in string theory. Given this, the tri-lmaos cannot make a germ from a single proton.

Why can't they just unfold it inside of your heart or brain to induce a heart attack or stroke?

                Anonymous

I'm under the impression it's a 2d plane when unfolded, so whatever effect a single photon has on things, it has even less. Not sure it even interacts with reality when unfolded aside from altering light, like what it did with Jin in space.

                Anonymous

If it blocks light, it couples to the electromagnetic force and can influence electrons and hence atoms. After all, sophons can frick with our eyes and particle accelerators. So its seems like you could just block an artery in the heart. Or even if you can't, you could just fly it through someone a billion times a while interacting like they do the eye and induce brain cancer. Humans would all be dead of cancer by the time you arrive.

                >accidents
And one of them brought a lower dimensional advanced civilization into theirs, which they had to fight. It created a giant eye; that was what unfolded over earth. It wasn't even a sophon it was some unknown other species. I say it just hitched a ride alongside the sophons to earth.

Perhaps they unfolded a fifth sophon near the sun which is just catching any broadcasts but is invisible, and that is when the eye got loose. I bet Saul will use the 290+ nukes from the staircase program to do an inverse morse code deterence signal from within the astroid belt this time. Could be the trisolars already think they have the sun blocked off so that is why they don't even care about killing us quickly or not. They aren't going to use the droplet for that this time.

If the sun is already blocked off and we can't produce a gravity broadcast system, then in their eyes we are already totally fricked. All they have to do is kill Saul so he doesn't figure out the dark forest, but even if he does he can't broadcast so 100% bugs at this point.

                Anonymous

This is where it gets complicated, because a proton has an extremely low mass, and as described in the book in the chapter on Trisolaris, which describes the creation of sophons, it takes them several half-baked attempts, one of which explains that a photon has accidentally unfolded into one dimension, its size is close to several light years, but since it has practically no mass, it just makes pretty garlands that don't interact with matter. Or something like that.

                Anonymous

Mass is irrelevant to how something couples electromagnetically. It just means you couldn't drop a sophon on top of someone and kill them. But you could still wedge it in an artery in their brain.

why risk messing with scientific progress when you can just fry every electronic device on earth? The Sophons have been on Earth for many years now, so according to the TV canon, they should have guessed that nuking electronic devices might be a much more efficient way of preventing any technological/scientific boom that might hinder ayyys plans to conquer Earth, instead of just convincing scientists to kys.

Because everyone misunderstands gravity. It isn't a force mediated by some particle, but rather an effect of mass slowing down time around it by warping the fabric of space time. Quantum mechanics then spergs out because it can't comprehend a force like interaction that isn't a force.

Wade's great but Da Shi's character has been absolutely eviscerated with Wade being moved to book 1. He has zero relationship with the Oxford Five which leaves him with basically nothing to do except connect people to Wade who he takes all his orders from, and all of his best moments are stripped out or given away to other characters. His personality is totally different too which removes all the levity he adds to the story.

Why do the trisolarians even need earth? Their tech seems advanced enough that they could just go full spaceborne species and live on ships/space stations.

Also, why don't they just live underground on their home planet? Once they were sufficiently advanced enough to have atomics, it seems like leaving underground in nuclear powered bunkers with UV greenhouses for agriculture seems vastly preferable than trying to endure the chaotic surface.

Their tech is more advanced in the show than the book and the difference isn't accounted for. It's pretty clear that no one can realistically live on ships in the context of the original, and people just hibernate these long voyages in cold sleep instead.

They also gloss over all the details about their home planet's crisis but basically they expect that they'll eventually just be swallowed by a sun and everything underground will die too so it isn't an option for them.

Why can no one realistically live on ships? Planets are basically just large rocky ships, with most of the mass being wasted on subsurface rocks. The mass of planets actually works against life since planets attract asteroids and that is probably the most common cause of extinction events across all planets. Cigar tube ships like in Rendevous with Rama would actually be a much more stable way to live long term and the solarians seem more the capable of building those at their tech level.

They explore that in the books. I don't fully buy it but "people" cannot live in space; you turn into space maoists at the drop of a hat! But that's just ships. Space stations around planets, well... Let's just say that has a different, much flatter problem.

      Anonymous

Earth is only 4 light years away, the closest system to theirs. Their planet will soon be engulfed by a sun or flung into deep space, living underground will not solve that. Also, in all likelihood, they do live underground as they have a flourishing advanced society at that point but it still won't save them.
As for the ships/stations later in the books, they do when their homeworld gets fricked

Trisolarans are extremely advanced at the start of the series, but they still don't have lightspeed travel and as Trisolaris is the only surviving non-star celestial body in their system so their material resources are limited to what's on their planet and presumably close-range asteroid mining. A massive habitable space station would face the same problems their planet does in the 3-star system.

The way I see it, their options were to either essentially destroy their planet to build one or more ark ships that would house them for tens of thousands of years until they find a stable system, or to do what they did. And what they did was much faster, less resource intensive, and promised an actual planet to live on.

I can't remember if the books even mention how the trisolarans generate power. Sure, they're pretty fricking advanced, being able to build devices made of quarks held together by the strong force, but even if they could build fusion reactors, the dark forest postulates that there's a finite amount of resources in the universe.
Extrapolating a bit, even if they can harvest energy from any form of matter itself remember the whole quark thing, how long can you hope to keep your civilisation thriving inside a giant cigar floating in space? Given the timescale reached by the end of the third book, even a few thousand years seems laughable.

Trisolaris can build magic stuff like sophons and doomdrops but only a limited number of them. They point out just how much of their resources are exhausted by these things

Aliens find out about Earth because Chinese lady loses faith in humanity. The aliens home system is totally fricked so they need ours. They deploy proton sized computers to frick our scientific progress.
In 400 years, they're supposed to arrive so humanity collectively freaks the frick out.
We manage to build upon our engineering prowess instead of more advanced science but it's not enough and the alien vanguard destroys our fleets with ease. Chinese waifu lover discovers how to send signals through the sun and alert other hostile and more advanced civs to our presence. Since the initial aliens want Earth intact, we hold them off with MAD. It fails because woman and Earth gets enslaved and eventually flattened (literally). The initial aliens frick off because they know we're fricked. Turns out the whole universe is also fricked because of global warming in space. Woman was also right all along.

Bro he's gonna use the staircase nukes this time! Nobody will see that coming! They changed it so it went off course after only like 2 nukes, so there will ALREADY be 200+ nukes in space he can use for MAD. Bet he'll wait until they reach the astroid belt so instead of blocking light from the sun it will let light out, so just inverse. They'll play it out like he is depressed and going back to look over why the project failed, when he is really just setting then up.

The plane thing is probably my biggest complaint about the sophons. They shouldn't have been able to do so. That being said, protons are really fricking small. There are protons hitting you day in and day out. They probably can't do much damage to rockets without concerted effort. They want to meet Yun Tianming/Will Downing anyway. Also, even at Earth's highest point in tech, it's not enough to matter. They don't need to waste the time killing rockets with sophons when a droplet can do that with ease. They only have a handful of sophons, they need them to stem the accelerators as that's where the real threat is - higher physics.

they're directly fricking with the particles in the accelerators themselves, not the computers. there'd be no point in fricking with the computers.

Have I missed something, because the only time brain in a jar man indirectly refers to fairy tales is in picrel, and it's not even mentioned or voiced, you just see the book cover for a few seconds, and it's clearly a nod to book readers, it hardly qualifies as foreshadowing, unless a very unlikely season 3 is signed off, with the actual scene from the book where brain main is allowed to communicate with weak china star woman, and from that moment only the most pedantic/moronic redditors will brag about MUH FORESHADOWING, because by then nobody will give a frick, and people who do give a frick will have had the time to read the book trilogy and not give a frick about the netflix dabid adaptation.

Why are you acting like foreshadowing only matters if people remember it? Most of the time foreshadowing goes over people's heads until a rewatch. It's still...foreshadowing.

My point is that foreshadowing is a cool trope when used carefully. Fatfrick GrrM relied a lot on foreshadowing when writing ASOIAF, and the common folk mistook foreshadowing for genius. Since D&D are also in charge of the 3BP adaptation, a certain amount of foreshadowing is to be expected, but china man writer actually did not rely on foreshadowing at any point in the trilogy, minus the fall of Constantinople and the 4D shit, which is described as a prologue for book 3, not book 2, not book 1, and the 4D shenanigans only happen in book 3. So again, as I said, you're overthinking it, and you're overestimating D&D's ability to adapt anything in a coherent and enjoyable way.

The timeline doesn't change, the books aren't quite in sequential order. Books 2 and 3 have parts that are set in the current day (aka book 1 era) and the Netflix series brings them in roughly where they should be. Most of the "Oxford 5" are either straight taken from those books or are merged. Saul is the main character from book 2, and Jin is basically the main character from book 3. Imo, it was the right move instead of introducing totally new characters for future seasons.

                Anonymous

Each chapter in the book has an "era" and a "year" in its name. Books 2 and 3 have different characters doing different things in the same eras and years. Netflix is instead choosing to do its series chronologically, meaning storylines from book 2 and 3 both show up in season 1. Think of how GoT would show Jon and Jaime in the same episode.

So should I continue watching the chinese series ? I heard people here saying it's a 1:1 adaptation of the books

Chinese series is a terrible slog. It does carbon copy the characters and apparently ALL the dialogue from the book and it does seem to be taking things in book order. I don't think that makes for compelling TV but if you want to read the books without actually reading the books it's probably your best bet.

I only have three minor complaints.
    1. The red guards being shocked and silenced when they realize they killed the guy. They should just have screamed more slogans and brought on the next victim. The show made them appear a little bit more timid than they should but I do understand that the chinese are still butthurt about this scene being included. Most normies in the west will be completely unfamiliar with the cultural revolution before they see this scene.
    2. Ye Wenjie. A lot of her story was cut. I didn't like how she appeared to be shocked and regretful once trisolaris "true nature" was revealed or whatever.
    3. Wade never dropped the kino line "We'll send only a brain."

TV Ye is a different character from book Ye. She's more of a villain and is down with the ETO until the end. My guess is they cut the rest of the Red Coast stuff because they thought it would confuse the audience that is expecting sci-fi and they probably wanted to minimize the runtime they were using subtitles for.

We cannot share the Earth with the people of that world. We could only destroy Earth civilization and completely take over that solar system.… Am I right?

                >Yes. But there is another reason for destroying Earth civilization. They’re also a warlike race. Very dangerous. If we try to coexist with them on the same planet, they will shortly learn our technology. Continuing in that state would allow neither civilization to thrive.

So you're saying the point was to get us all to Aus so they can exterminate us all at once? It's possible, but there is no real evidence they had that final plan, and the fact they left the solar system without having their droplets destroy earth's core or whatever, is also not in line with them still seeing us as merely bugs.

Yes, I think this is the case. I felt it was an obvious extension of the Dark Forest theory of kill or be killed. As long as any human beings remained, they would be a threat to Trisolarians. This all being said, the Trisolarians didn't retaliate after their system was destroyed by immediately broadcasting Earth's position as I had assumed they would, so you might be right in that regard.

At this point, their cultural prostate is so titillated that they no longer give a frick about the survival of humanity. Realistically, a proton could only do so much damage. You're bombarded by protons on a daily basis and you're still alive. They allude to it in the tv series. They probably could kill a few people (maybe even quite a few) but that would take from their ability to frick up the particle accelerators and potentially give humanity a chance to devise a countermeasure. The netflix series does embellish what they can do a bit. It's unlikely they'd be able to frick around with Wade's plane all that much.

Anon, if you want to get fricked, you can do it completely anonymously by installing a homosexual dating app, you will meet another sick man near where you live who will give you AIDS, and you will stop bothering us with boards and threads that have absolutely nothing to do with the disease you're suffering from.
Maybe then you'll find some sort of meaning in your life by being a victim of gay cancer and that's it, that's the end game, you're a victim and you should be celebrated for letting your inane tendencies override what might have been some sort of will.
Go to your nearest church and, if you're so inclined, you might just be saved from the filthy, disgusting disease that's eating away at your soul and your arse.

I have a social life and I've been through many companies and circles of friends and most of the time you'll stumble upon "that flamboyant gay" and if you show any sign of sympathy, even a faint smile, they'll tell you their stories of homosexualry. Believe it or not, I even know a guy, a close friend of my younger sister, the guy was a teacher and at one point he felt confident enough to tell me that he had fricked one of his students. He was a teacher in some sort of community college equivalent in the country where I live, but still, the boy was barely legal. Later that night he told me all about gay apps. Apparently even grindr is too prudish for rough bareback, but they always find a way to get fricked, it's like a giant anal masonry without the occult shit.

how do the sophons create those countdowns inside people's brains?

They're flying around inside their eyes. You can kind of see the squiggly lines (which are the sophon's trails) in the countdown.

I'm more interested in knowing what happens at zero

Literally nothing, it's a scare tactic.

Not in the brain, just in the retina.
It's even emphasised in the first book, as sophons can also alter the light that reaches the film, so book Wang Miao (TV Auggie) also sees the countdown when he takes pictures with his film camera.
