Why do you obsess over /misc/ so much? I would say it's just a group of people that hate the board but the amount of threads and posts like this make it seem more than just a few people and more like a group. What do you get out of it? /misc/ hasn't even really said anything about the movie so why do you automatically start whining about perceived attacks on it for 'wokeness'? What motivates you so much? Why are you like this?

        Anonymous

I like talking about /misc/ in the same way a kid would wonder how their crazy uncle would react to something. It’s like, “yeah, this thing is alright, but I bet Uncle Misc would throw a hilarious fit over it and that would be even more entertaining than the actual thing.”

I've seen it twice, once at the cinema and once at the drive in, and I plan to see it again at the cinema when it's less crowded. It's an enjoyable movie and, as you seem to be discovering for the first time, normal people don't care about your private anxieties. There is no hope for the world you wish you lived in.

Oh yeah? And which one of those movies pulled in a Billy this summer? Targeting Boomers is how you get paid, dumbass. No one has kids these days and when they do they can't afford to take them to the movies anyway. Kids media is dead for a reason, milking nostalgia is how you make a Big Bill.

Point is, first movie off a massive IP making money isn’t impressive. If made same movie without the Barbie brand abd it was making this type of money, it would be impressive. And would mean go woke go broke is a meme. All this movie shows is Hollywood dead a creatively bankrupt without IPs. Every top ten movie this year is IPs and sequels. Oppenheimer is a fluke won’t crack the top ten

          Anonymous

There's plenty of massive IP's that have had a movie that's done shit. Cope harder.

            Anonymous

Yeah, IPs that got ruined because woke bullshit. If you asked me 25 years ago one biggest flops would be Indiana Jones, I’d laughed. That Star Wars become such woke trash it’s relegated to streaming service. Nobody would’ve believed it. Star Wars was so big people
went and saw movies just to see the previews to it. Now look at it. Same shit will happen to Barbie and Mario

              Anonymous

How was the last Indiana Jones woke? Did you even watch it?
The thing was pure boomer slop, the only thing remotly woke people can point to as woke in this movie is... one line about how the god-daughter was "smart and beautiful" which was clearly a joke. Mario and Guardians of the galaxy are infinitly more woke that Indiana Jones which clearly targetted an older conservative audience.

Again, did you watch the movie?

          Anonymous

You're missing the point. Millions of normies saw woke propaganda with a troony in it, and there has been no backlash. This could be a tipping point. When people think of troony, they could think of something like this. That is a nightmare scenario.

          Anonymous

If you're saying that the only reason people are seeing this is because it's a big brand then that's bullshit. Nobody cares about the Barbie brand - there are plenty of bland animated Barbie movies and nobody watches those. It's moronic to pretend that everyone and their grandmother is shitting their pants in excitement just because they just wanted a Barbie product so badly.

where those Barbie cartoons mass marketed like this movie. Again. If the movie stands on its own, why use the Barbie Brand. Make her a original doll or a knock off like Simpson did with Malibu Stacy

I’ll take an occasional L on the gender bullshit if it means we can get some wins for white people on screen. the whole wine gender ideology is already so passé anyways, this was more like a dead cat bounce than some new paradigm.

The common thread between oppie and Barbie? It’s race. We’re unironically needed this.

I wish you were right but the two big summer events this year have been Taylor swift and the Barbie movie. That isn’t a coincidence. Women are increasingly making more money, are increasingly not starting families (aka now they need something to spend it on) and are increasingly upset about their life (just listen to any new swift song or any theme from Barbie). Instead of looking inward and blaming themselves, you know something that requires accountability, it is far easier to just pander to them and have them eat out of your hand how hard life as a woman is

This is only the beginning I’m afraid

I really don't understand the hype for this movie.
Are Barbie and Ken a big thing in America? Is everyone from kid to an adult familiar with the Barbie universe or something?

Idk as a non-burger the only connection I have to Barbie is that Europop song from Acqua so I don't get why people have been talking about this film for months before it was even released.
Openheimer I can understand but this??
Also from the trailer and some clips I've seen, the movie just looks bad to me.

    >It needs to make 2 billion to break even
Deadline revealed the break even point for the little mermaid was $476 million considering its production budget, marketing, theater cut, and that had a budget of at least $250 million.

The 2 to 2.5x rule is for the production budget of the movie. In the absolute worst scenario for barbie, it would have needed to make $450 million to break even (reported budget of 145 million). Women are why the movie succeeded, and they marketed the movie for free.
    >Wtf why did past woke movies flop
Because they were based on ips that simply weren't relevant and/or didn't appeal to women. This movie is a hundred times more woke than them and yet is a massive success. Perhaps this go woke go broke stuff just doesn't apply to women. Worst case scenario, it was just a mirage that took place during COVID that is now fading away. I mean, normalgays were fine with spiderman and that had a trans kids poster in it.

It was an original concept, the marketing was great and created an excuse to have a socially-driven outing to the movies, casting Ryan Gosling and letting him be really fricking weird with the role was genius, and it just seemed like a fun movie containing things that people would enjoy seeing. It doesn't seem any more complicated than that.
