Nobody has ever been treated worse in society because of a fricking joke on a stand up or in a tv show or cartoon. This is a fact.

This is the same argument that video games cause real life violence.

      Twitter is my favorite comic/cartoon.

      >punch up
When you want everyone to punch up, then people complain about making the same jokes about the same people over and over again. That's why barely anyone jokes about religion anymore, George Carlin beat that horse to death.

Same thing with cancel culture, every single comedian these days has some segment on cancel culture and Twitter b***hes about it all the time

Is that missing Spongebob learning the lesson? The episode was a clear mockery of stereotypes and racism and rather than just saying "this is wrong" it puts it into perspective and has a great ending in which it is shown that comedy can still be uncensored and fair if it takes jabs at all subjects.

This like saying "Do you remember that movie in which Rudolf was discriminated for being different?" As if that was the message.

On the other hand, fricking have a nice day OP. You fricking thread is a Tweeter screenshot, really? Do you have no fricking shame?

Really, not one person got that he was fricking with you? Even with the "Your rights end where my feeling begin" that's clearly a mockery of SJW.

Spongebob tried to tell a harmless joke, but the audience boo at him. It wasn't until he accidentally bring up Sandy that people found it "funny".

It's perfectly acceptable to make fun of anyone as anyone, but to be in the spirit of good fun it should be punching sideways or up always. Nobody would give a shit if edgy comedians told jokes about trans people or whatever skin color or demographic if it's done from a place of understanding and respect.
The reason why so many comedians can crack jokes about their own demographic is because they understand the nuances of that experience inherently, but there's nothing saying that anyone cant get an ample understanding of someone else's experience through dialogue and respect. Attitude and intent also usually come through easily to people.

Videogames don't cause violence, but uncritical parroting of stereotypes reinforces and reintroduces those stereotypes to new people. Also uncritically or without any nuance repeating stereotypes is lazy and easy, and not terribly funny for most people. It's why has-been comedians love doing it, because they aren't funny anymore or are too lazy to try hard.

                >nobody in the response chain has mentioned trans people
anon this particular train of conversation started all the way up here:

                >Nobody would give a shit if edgy comedians told jokes about trans people or whatever skin color or demographic if it's done from a place of understanding and respect.

Now you know as well as I do that Trans people would still hate it if it was from a place of understanding.

It has very specifically been about trans people ever since.
If you have joined in an somehow missed that crucial aspect of the conversation, then the real joke was inside of you all along.

He was asking for jokes about trannies by pratchett, not just any joke.

You could read some of the books. The entire reason to bring him up was because his quote about punching up not down is what made the concept so popular lately. And that got spread around because of those TERFs bringing him up recently.

It's all one big joke here that's gone full circle here.

The joke about joking about white people in front of a white audience is to never say "white people." If you make a joke about white people making bland and sub-par food, you get race statistics in the replies. Make the same joke about Anglos or WASPs having bland and sub-par food and you'll get nothing but laughs. Shit on italians, the irish, or whatever Euro country you could dream of. It's a joke that entertains someone. There are no other criteria.

To leftists, comedy is just another tool to reorganise society and bring out social justice and equity. It has no value in and of itself, other than the fact that it works as a good disguise for activism. The fact that they equate it with violence at all ("punching") should tell you something about what they think they're doing when they make cartoons, write jokes, or produce movies and TV shows. Art and entertainment only serve as a covert vehicle for organized violence against people they see as the enemy. They're wrong, of course, because only people raised by a TV get their morals that way, but it explains their obsession with taking control of those spaces.

        Anonymous

        >The fact that they equate it with violence at all ("punching")
The origin of the term is unknown. Even though the comedic formula using the classic "set-up, premise, punch line" format was well-established in Vaudeville by the beginning of the 20th century, the actual term "punch line" is first documented in the 1920s; the Merriam-Webster dictionary pegs the first use in 1921.

Is that missing Spongebob learning the lesson? The episode was a clear mockery of stereotypes and racism and rather than just saying "this is wrong" it puts it into perspective and has a great ending in which it is shown that comedy can still be uncensored and fair if it takes jabs at all subjects.

i dont like the "punch up" thing because it implies people know what "up" even is. It acts like life is on some linear pecking order with zero nuance or context. What if american black people made jokes about african black people? Is that punching up? Am I punching down if I'm making fun of gingers while being both gay and moronic myself? How do we quantify this social order, and how do we know what's above and below us?

This reminds me of a feminism subreddit getting mad at Bill Burr for his various rants against women. They did the whole you shouldn't punch down thing but I'm genuinely not sure if Bill would think women are "down" in the context he's discussing.

Well israeli people certainly aren't down in the context of being millionaires. In the US there is no ethnic or racial majority of millionaires, but israeli people are by far the largest of any group, well above white Europeans which are the most populous group and among the most significantly under-represented. Black people are significantly over-represented as well, East Asians too. White folks can really only punch up in the example that that anon gave. Not a good one in retrospect. I think the whole thing gets to the heart of the issue, that to get behind this SJW woke crap you have to hold all of these conflicting opinions about yourself at the same time. You're equal but simultaneous an inferior victim which is also the source of your power and superiority under that system, all so that you can whichever you need to be in any given circumstance as it suits your interests.

Parents used to teach kids to not do this. Unless they're watching something explicitly educational, and even then the show would tell kid to talk to their parents about this. No, even children shouldn't be taking life lessons from spongebob.

This wasn't because of a joke, this was because people started believing this was actual fact. Which, of course, isn't the fault of the joke. Its the fault of the people so fricking stupid they couldn't tell it was a joke.

Your argument isn't "pretty good." Trans people are not more accepted since Dave Chappelle shat on them in every Netflix special he had, but they are being denied gender affirmative care and their parents are turned in to child protective agencies for respecting their gender identity. You can't have a laugh about trannies and say it's all in good fun when we're doing everything in our power to reduce their numbers. Just say you fricking hate trannies and Black folk, it's far more honest than your bullshit philosophy about making fun of everyone equally, as if such a thing is possible when personal biases come into play

You can easily make a joke about black people and broken homes in a way that I'd like, or you can fail at that and just say racist stuff. Regardless, you aren't literally harming me by saying things that are annoying, and I think its creepy how people say words are literally violence now.

The OP pic, OP, and all the replies here are stupid, but the "don't punch down" rule is a self-imposed one for never looking like an butthole. Regardless of people politicizing it, it's still a good one to use if you want to be liked more than hated. Sure it's easier to just make fun of one group and hope everyone not upset by it will be enough to compensate, or to make fun of everyone equally and use that to deflect criticism. That's the easy way, the cheap way. But when you punch up it means less to anyone you hit and their numbers are smaller. Punching down limits your audience.

You wanna pretend you're superior for not following some SJW trend, go ahead and have a nice day in the foot. It's like refusing to eat healthy because you think vegans are annoying.

Punch down and your audience is smaller and you look like an butthole, punch up and your audience is bigger and you're liked. Just common fricking sense.

People who punch up are already not funny

              >punching up is not funny because.... I said so
              >you can't make jokes without making fun of someone!
              Go outside. Have sex.
People make jokes about shared experiences. A majority of humor is about communicating a concept non-verbally through shared knowledge. The people who think all humor comes from tragedy are misanthropic nuts. Jokes are funny because of how you tell them in the same way monsters are scary through how little you show them. It's more about what isn't said, what's implied, what's shared. Then another whole branch of humor is from misdirection or shaking up preconceptions, so setting up an obvious payoff then surprising with something else can result in humor.

stereotype humor only ever works because the stereotypes are known. It's confirming what exists in their heads so they think "that's so true" and chuckle. That's why it's such a lazy form of humor.

Punching up works the same but you have more people laughing along and the people who are "up" are to the vast majority, more deserving of it. It's seen as fair. The comedian is seen as an underdog to go after people bigger than them above. It's still just as lazy but it's more effective.

And if you're too lazy to rub a couple braincells together, making fun of yourself is safe with any audience. Insisting you have to make fun of people just to be funny is a sign you're not funny and shouldn't try a career in comedy.

My solution would be to make jokes and let the pieces fall where they may. I'm a firm believer of jokes never causing a group of people to be dehumanized in anyway; look through history, and you'll see the way propaganda dehumanizes people. Unless I'm mistaken, this wasn't done through joking and stand up, but through authority figures going "These people are the enemy, hate these people".

Also, try making fun of everyone. I legitimately think that's the best way to do comedy anyway. Just for god sakes be funny, and take the L if your joke doesn't land right.

If your entire routine is based around insults, you're not actually funny to begin with. Any idiot can get a laugh if he just makes fun of somebody.

Wait, but if any idiot can get a laugh if he makes fun of someone, doesn't that mean that idiot is still being funny? What you should have said is "If you use insults to make people laugh, you're not a comedian. Any idiot can make people laugh with insults".

        easy =/= more effective
I'm saying one is easy and cheap but limits your audience. The other extreme is harder but with more potential.

As another anon said, a lot of washed up comedians develop a reputation for cheap shots using stereotypes and little else. This is because it takes no effort or creativity, it's easy. But far fewer find them funny. I don't even mean in the "they're offended" sense, I mean the jokes are just dry to all but a few.

Dumb humor is the same. You can make lazy dumb and childish humor and there are stupid people out there who are suckers for it. Most people find it obnoxious. So you can cheaply dish out content to bring in money from a small audience. If you can survive on just them then that's fine, but you'll never be big. And if you used to be big you'll eventually just become known for the fart jokes with your glory days too far behind you.

Punching down is the same effect. It's cheap, it's easy, the path is so tried and tested there's no new ground, you're only reinforcing what others already think in their heads and that somehow makes them chuckle. It can pay bills. It won't get you anywhere.

    Yup, anon's a mtf troony.

    >That's the easy way, the cheap way.

Words literally do not "hurt" in the same way that sticks and stones "hurt". That's the point of the saying. Of course words bother people, but they don't break your bones. If they did, none of us could function.

Would you really cry if some random person just called you an butthole on the street? What about racial slurs, like Black person or something? I've been called a Black person by random people on the street, and you know what I did? Walked into the restaurant I was headed for and ate my dinner.

I'll ignore for a second that this is an insane hyperbole that's not at all reflective of reality. That's still not literally breaking my bones, I can always just leave the town. There's a variety of free ways my broke ass can up and leave literally everything behind and have some sort of housing and education, so I wouldn't have to put up with that. If anything, it'd make leaving easier if everyone in town just hated me.

You have to be so terminally online to not only think that jokes have this much power on people but to believe that humans are so damn moronic to perceive other people based on a joke they heard instead of their experiences, socialization, morality, beliefs and Principles.
It's even a weaker argument than the "violent video games lead to violent children" because at least the latter has the benifit of children actually being kinda moronic.
