There's no holes. We never see or know Diane or anything about her prior to Season 3. Before that, she is simply the name that Cooper is directing his recordings to. She might be a partner, she might be a desk clerk, she might be the head of FBI, hell her name could even be an acronym for another organization. Season 3 is the only season that chooses to characterize her. As such, any way she behaves can easily be taken as similar enough to fool Albert/Gordon. However, it's pretty clear after not too long that they know something is up with her, even before they tap her phone, and decide to let her tag along and watch as things unfold.

When you look at Tarkovsky, for example, a lot of it is interpretative, a scene can take multiple meaning and more of than not his scenes are shot to be felt and experienced, not necessarily meant to be follow by the rational side of the brain, but all in all his story pointed somewhere, his scenes were included to offer a cohesive experience, however abstract. What Tarkovsky didn't do is throw cheap cgi at you and have you make excuses for him and his "genius", he didn't cover you in shit and keep throwing it at you just vause he felt like it. His characters made sense even when they acted unsual or where faced with situations or states that were unusual. So I get surrealism. I get symbolism and interpretation.
