They aren't BAD paintings, but I can't imagine why someone would want to show them off at an art exhibit. They are incredibly mundane and will be of no interest to anyone other than the artist and (apparently) her boss.

my sister is an "artist" like this, and she gets into "exhibits" and its all a matter of who you know.
my art is objectively better and I do commissions including for hentai, meanwhile my sister has never made money from her "art" but there is a whole moron community about circlejerking each others shitty art like this so she thinks she is better because she has been in these "exhibits". its sad really

in most creative scenes there's big groups of bad or at best mediocre artists who do this. they form one big hugbox circle jerk where each of them transactionally praises each others shitty work when it comes out in return for the same thing to be done to them, ensuring they never get any better. being critical isn't permitted because most of the people would shatter into a million pieces if it happened to them

i would get everyone of them into viewing me as the mysterious outsider artist and then manipulate their weak minds into lusting for me and even competing for it. that's how i met my wife. she didn't fall for it at all.

I had an art professor like this. His art was technically skilled but incredibly mediocre and creatively bankrupt (90% of it was just a model skeleton on a dark background), yet he was a major donator for a very tiny art gallery so they had gallery shows for him and his equally talentless boomers all the time who were attended by only his friends who all proceeded to circlejerk their own art, was extremely bizarre and embarrassing to see tbh.

A lot of classes do little exhibits like this at the end. It's like in grade school when your parents were invited to come see the shitty school play your class put on. Just kinda fun for friends if you want to invite any, you know? Plus experience. The goal of these classes is to get good enough to be put in one of these shows, so it kind of makes sense they show you what it's like.

Kinda dissapointing. There was no follow through with her art plot line. She got all the validation she needed from Michael's hug then she stopped trying. Pam plebsley

The tragic joke with Pam is that she is meant to be unextraordinary. Her work is meant to be mediocre and mundane with no real point. Had she been written to be an actually talented woman who was better than her receptionist job and was actually successful in art, it wouldn't work. A lot of the Office early on especially has those elements where you see that the characters really aren't meant to be special. That's kind of where the last few seasons start to drop the ball, because it starts to drop that idea and make the characters actually competent and talented and successful. Dwight is actually a super human master martial artist, Jim and Darryl actually jump a dream company and are successful, a character like Angela could pull a Senator. Funny enough, Pam really is the only character on the show they actually commit to making unextraordinary throughout, with her only real victory in the final few seasons being her getting a mural job for the warehouse that looks like shit and gets vandalized. The literal only thing carrying Pam as anything special is the fact that Jenna Fischer is a cutie.

very true. I hate the term flanderization because it's overused and doesn't fully describe what's going on, but it's a good starting point for Office characters - their funny little quirks got expanded and took over.

          Anonymous

I’d disagree really. It’s not their quirks that resulted in the ending it was just the writers trying to give a happy end to what was originally a rather mean spirited parody of modern office culture.

The joke is that everyone is shit but thinks they’re better than everyone else. They don’t deserve a happy ending

Actually I would say they are pretty bad.
Like, a lot of them are watercolor outlined by ballpoint pen.
That's not something you'd find in an art exhibit, it's something you'd find in a 9th grader's sketchbook.

Swap the ballpoint for proper ink, and that's how two of my favorite comic artists draw. That's actually a very good way of drawing comics solo.

Have you never been to a nonprofessional art exhibit? That's 90% of the "art"

I think the problem is that they're just on fricking computer paper and are very obviously warped. If they looked exactly the same but were on cavases or at least framed they would feel more professional.

I agree it’s good but it’s sterile and lacking the emotional element that made the romantic era move and it’s also done at the tail end of the romantic era. It’s like putting out a decent blues record in 2021.

Even if it’s good it’s out of style. See Eric Clapton’s solo career

If only there was some sort of institution that was created to hone an already talented individual's skills.

A place where someone who already has a good amount of skill can go to perhaps learn to be even better at something they already do well.

Realistically speaking, how much money can you make from porn comissions? And do you have to interact with the buyer outside of what he wants?

      Anonymous

If you go on Patreon you can see how much artists make a month through subs. Some make as much as 1000$ a month and that isn't including comms which can easily be 100$ min for higher end artists. If they're cranking em out that's decent money. And then if they have pixiv or any other outlets for their art that's possibly more money. They can make a moderate living if they have a decent following. As far as interaction, these artists have discord servers for that.

Wasn't that before AI? Earnings must have dropped now

          Anonymous

Not really no. AI had basically zero effect on artists except maybe the bottom bottom tier of people. There weren't really any lost customers, but the few that did decide to use AI instead of buy were replaced by slightly more people buying art just to support "real" artists so it was net neutral at worst.

you will always have to interact with your customers, so you better pretend to be a girl so you can make some simp bucks on the side like most porn artists

I agree with this in spirit, but the opposite is just as annoying - where people are trying to git gud, but they whine that 'it's just a hobby' or 'it's not finished yet' or 'I'm just starting out' to deflect any criticism. I think Pam's take is actually better than the opposite extreme.

Why are men tore a new one whenever they're proud of something mediocre they did, but when it's women in the exact same situation, they're showered with love and pats on the back saying "there there, you did your best and it's not that bad!"?

Pam's art is good for like a high school junior, but beyond that? It's shit. She kind of sabotaged herself using such shitty Dunder Mifflin crapstock paper, though. I mean look at how it wrinkles and creases under the paint. Pathetic.
