"A wizard is never late" was a joke

and I bet none of you got it!

When Gandalf arrives to Hobbiton at the beginning of Fellowship, Frodo accuses him of being late. This is the setup, because Gandalf obviously didn't actually say when he was coming (he hadn't visited in decades by that point). To which Gandalf replies:
>A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to!
Both of them pause for a few beats and then burst out laughing, signalling to the slow ones in the audience that what Gandalf said was a joke!

The joke is that any time a wizard arrives is precisely the time he wished to arrive, whether some consider it late or early doesn't matter cause the wizard predicted that time of arrival for himself.

Many people took this to mean that Gandalf does arrive on time for every appointment rather than being subject to the same forces of chance like everyone else.

It's even worse when you think of the circumstances.

        >Grima
        >is cast out immediately when Theoden realizes his character
        >need the influence of Saruman to be instated
        >is almost killed the moment Theoden wakes up

        >Lickspittle
        >is given literally tens of times to redeem himself
        >is even trusted with Bard's family after Bard KNOWS(or should) he can't be trusted
        >is quite obviously fricking evil and cowardly but STILL Bard trusts him
        >dies only as a circumstance, that moron Bard still probably wouldn't have killed him for his last betrayal

Imagine if Theoden kept Grima around and said "here, watch this naked and vulnerable Eowen". Lickspittle exists solely to hurt the story and make Bard look moronic

I’m not sure which is worse: him just telling Bard to go frick himself, and making off with a shitload of gold after being annoying as shit for a 1 1/2 movies, or being killed in what might be the stupidest way that I’ve ever seen committed to film.

The responses to this post finally taught me who this person is supoosed to be (after I have seen this exact post dozens of times) and I saw the Hobbit movies in theaters.

M4 Book Edit cut replaced my memories of the films. After I watched it I learned that the wood post Bard rests his bow on before shooting Smaug was originally a snot nosed child actor who was shoehorned in for reasons unknown. I didnt even notice until I saw the making-of video for the cut. That was how unmemorable the original movies were. I recently watched a fanservicey youtube video of the istari fighting melkorhomies on some kind of a ancient ruin mountaintop area, and I know I've seen it before, but I just could not invoke the memory connection.

gandalf was pretending to sternly remind him that he arrives when he damn well pleases then they both laughed because they knew it wasnt that serious

        it wasn't a joke
Frodo was teasingly suggesting that Gandalf should have come sooner, while at the same time attempting to pleasantly surprise him by his presence
But Gandalf swiftly responded, explaining how he is in fact not late because, he meant to arrive when he did, and Frodo's assumption that he was supposed to come earlier was wrong

They laugh because their stern, argumentative tone of voice was all an act that they can no longer maintain, because they are good friends who are in fact very happy to see each other

OP is a moron. It's a nuanced joke which means both assumptions are true. He is late and very much a person who makes mistakes like everyone, but he is also wise and arrives when it is appropriate and he is needed. Both these things being true is what makes the line funny.
I hope your autistic brain can comprehend this.
The moment is also foreshadowing his arrival as Gandolf the White later on, and a commentary on his role in the story in general you moron.

    >Frodo : Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of. Never had any adventures or did anything unexpected. Whatever you did, you've been officially labeled a disturber of the peace.
    >Fat middle age hobbit scowls at Gandalf in a judging manner
Gandalf sure was humbled afterwards though wasn't he? He came at Frodo with some hubris and Frodo hit him with some hard facts causing Gandalf to reexamine his thinking and position in relation to the local populous. A masterful stroke of writing by Peter Jackson to capture this sudden mood whiplash. Joss Whedon himself couldn't have done this better!

      >Smiles at the impromptu fireworks display
      >Scowls again when he notices his wife is watching
      >Scowls years later when the hobbits pass by him to return to the Shire
It's sad, it's like in the first part of the first movie he still had a bit of the children's sense of wonder but by the end of the third he's jaded enough to shake his heads at fellow hobbitq having horses and greeting him politely as they pass by.

In a climactic scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) storms a fortress of orcs to rescue his friend Frodo. During the battle, Sam bravely and emotionally shouts at the orcs. One of the final things he shouts is "And that's for my old gaffer!" While many think this is a reference to Sam's father Hamfast Gamgee, the line actually has a double meaning. A "gaffer" in the film industry is actually a type of electrician. Only four days before this scene was shot, longtime prolific film industry veteran, Allen Smithee passed away. Smithee who had been working on the Lord of the Rings trilogy until he became ill had been working closely with Astin, doing the lighting for his scenes. Sean Astin used his emotional grief of his friend and coworker's passing to deliver a very memorable line.

    >A wizard is never late
Gandalf was referring to a menstrual cycle.
    A wizard is a virgin.
Virgins, due to never having engaged in the act of sexual reproduction, are never worried about being "late."
Frodo was worried Gandalf was going to have an anchor baby in the Shire.
Gandalf assured Frodo this was not the case because his virginity was still intact.

Isn't this one of the many hints Tolkien drops about the nature of destiny/free will/providence via Gandalf? Gandalf is ultimately meant to be where he is at all times. So even when he's late he's not really late at all. Gandalf's understanding of this is ultimately what separates him from Saruman and Sauron.
