The imagery of the headless statue also helps making the scene more unnerving. Your brain is left trying to rationalize what just happened.
That's why the first Insidious had a GOAT jumpscare too, just willfully violating logic
There's a good fakeout early on in The Conjuring where the girl is looking under her bed and you're sure that a jumpscare is coming, only for it to never come. I've seen the same trick in other movies but the one in The Conjuring was pretty good.

They also do a fake jumpscare where she wakes up a random doctor and then goes about her business. The entire scene just lulls you into a false sense of security.

I like the directors cut despite how chopped up it is. The Father Morning scenes feel tacked on in the theatrical version, and I love Dourif's portrayal of the Gemini in the original scenes. It feels like an actual serial killer recounting his exploits while fricking with Kinderman in between.

The scene early on where he thinks he hears something in the convent or church office area, I can't recall which, but there's nothing there (except a statue that briefly looks different), also memorable.

I love introducing people to this movie because everyone just assumes a film called The Exorcist 3 is going to be complete shit and they’re always blown away by how good it is.
On the other hand, The Exorcist 2 is exactly as shit as it sounds.
The Exorcist 2 is why most people do not want to watch The Exorcist 3. Such a shame that it could ruin future iterations of the series.

This movie has one of my favorite openings. The transcendence beyond Tubular Bells conveying "this ain't yer mom's Exorcist". Perfect atmosphere depicting the underlying spiritual war waged on Earth and the arrival of Legion to the town. Oh, and the dream sequences too sprinkled throughout as well.
