Somebody here said it before but the spirit of TD Season 1 was treading the line between science and supernatural very carefully. Neither side needed to be debunked because it was subtle.
By going balls deep into absurd supernatural stuff the writer has pushed themselves into a position where they have to either say the supernatural is real OR give a scientific explanation for everything. Both of these things would be shit and hacky. You can see the train wreck coming from a mile away, the writer isn't intelligent enough to write something like S1.
This season feels like they wrote a script for a new X-Files revival but it got turned into True Detective instead.
