I have no idea who she is.
But I haven't read DC in years, I was only paying attention to this to see how badly DC would frick up a book I once loved and had all the issues of.
Turns out they've fricked it up about as much as I expected. Which is a LOT. This book used to have such great energy.

      This is a depressing image.
Dixon's Birds of Prey wasn't he best book on the shelves, but it had a unique charm. It had an identity. You could close your eyes and picture what a "Birds of Prey" story might look like... probably Dinah in a disguise, trying to make her way around somewhere she shouldn't be, with Babs talking to her via an earpiece.
This picture is basically Suckerpunch, just a collection of women fighting the Hordes of Mordor. It has no distinct personality of its own. This is the Anytown USA of comics, with nothing to link the cast except the idea of "women doing it for themselves," ramped up to such an extreme degree that Harley fricking Quinn is giving a free pass because she's female too.

The general rule of "bloodthirsty antihero man" is entirely dependent on how much they show us. That's part of the issue, we were introduced to Harley when she was a civilian murdering sociopath and that's still hard to get past.
Honestly, Season 1 of the show worked damn well because she was a villain protagonist while season 3 forced her into the role of "hero" even though it was made pretty clear heroes and villains were basically treated like a reality show in that world

The people behind DC have the problem of either making it so that Harley was manipulated by the Joker, but that takes away her agency so that's bad, or none of those murders actually happened.

It's funny, Harley was a good example of someone with Stockholm Syndrome, and she fit in perfectly with the other villains in Bathman's Rogues. If the writers would just accept that she did fricked up shit in the past, even because she wanted to appeal to her abuser, it would make for a more well rounded character.

Nah, she 100% picked Harley for sales reasons. I remember in the old thread someone asking her about C-Listers characters and she said no to that because she wants the Book to sell.

Basically, She's in it for the paycheck, not for telling a good story. That's why Harley is here instead of Oracle or Huntress, for instance.

          >I remember in the old thread someone asking her about C-Listers characters and she said no to that
That's not what she said. She just said she can't do to many unknowns because then it won't sell. Barda and Zealot wouldn't be on the team if she wasn't willing to use c-listers.

            Anonymous

            >She can't do too many unknowns
If she was a good writer, that wouldn't be important at all. Like, she could grab the most C-Lister character ever put in DC and make him or her as popular as Canary or Cass.

Wasn't X-Factor from Marvel basically that? A book filled with literal nobodies compared with the X-Men or the Avengers and STILL managed to make them all good alongside the Book itself?

I dunno, never liked the "this character is too small known it wouldn't work" excuse in this scenarios tbh, it just shows what type of writer we have.

              >If she was a good writer, that wouldn't be important at all

                Anonymous

Plenty of MEH writers, you mean. A good writer can grab anything and twist it enough to make it work.

Mr. Freeze was originally a C-Lister, and characters like Peacemaker, Polka Dot Man, Vigilante or The Spot too.

I agree tho with all this being people's fault too (half/half tbh) because in DC's case they keep buying A-Listers stuff.

It would sell even worse if Thompson had used 3 unknown characters instead of Dinah, Cass, and Harley. And that's what his entire reply chain stemmed form. I'm talking about specifically right now. The market is too small and comics are too expensive so nobody is willing to take a risk on anything other than the big name characters. i don't care about any aspect of this but i saw someone pre-emptively tweet "i can't wait for harley quinn to be the final member of the team and tank the whole premise" and get an indignant reply from thompson and it was pretty funny

QRD on Kelly? What's wrong with her?

Nothing much. Cinemaphile just b***hes about everything. They wanted her to write some softcore porn comic or something.

      >QRD on Kelly? What's wrong with her?
Wrote IDW's Jem and the Holograms and left because it they wouldn't let her write gayer stories.
      Wrote "The Better Hawkeye".
      Wrote "The Carol Corps".
      Wrote West Coast Avengers.
Wrote one of the few runs of Deadpool that got cancelled.
This is just body of work stuff, not including any of the industry gossipy shit she's mucked in.

Some more info on the book per Kelly

    >hinted at there being more than 6 issues (lol) and says the roster will reshuffle after the first arc
    >two more major characters are going to appear
    >there is an explanation in the first issue as to why Babs isn't here (too busy being mommy to a dog probably)
    >this is only the field team

Why did DC turn Harley into a hero again?

      Anonymous

So they'll have another actual POPULAR hero other than Batman. As while Superman and Wonder Woman are famous and iconic they aren't particularly popular, and GL movie flopped ruining that character's/franchise's chance and this was around the time Flash's show started so his popularity was in his infancy and hadn't caught up to the comics yet

      >Starts off as a villain created entirely for BTAS
      >Becomes popular due to her unique look, gimmick, voice acting and characterisation
      >So popular in fact she gets imported to the mainline DC comic book universe
      >Mostly serves as a C-Lister for a decade or so, liked but never really loved with a few decent solo runs and appearances
      >The age of the internet, social media, online forums, mainstream nerd culture and cosplay all arrive in the meantime
      >Rocksteady releases Arkham Asylum, wherein Harley dresses like a loose nurse
      >Women jump at the opportunity to throw together relatively cheap cosplay that will get them attention and give them n excuse to bawd it up
      >Men jerk off, as usual
      >Still, the character is more or less still a C-Lister
      >A few years later, Arkham City releases
      >Harley is dressed as a juggalo alt girl biker bawd
      >MAJOR TURNING POINT FOR THE CHARACTER
      >Nerds, historic in their love for alt girls, go fricking apeshit over Harley's new look
      >Cosplay bawds, historic in their love of attention, alt fashion and easy cosplay, go fricking apeshit over Harley's new look
      >Porn artists even go crazy over Harley's new look
      >Sexual awakenings and reevaluations of the character abound
      >She becomes an overnight sensation, enough so that she gets her own DLC
      >Nerds, nerd girls and fake nerd girls all clamour for more Harley
      >The New 52 takes the opportunity to capitalise on her new alt girl appeal by changing her design to be more loose juggalo than clown girl
      >She's funny, she's crazy, she kills people, she wears red and black... Sounds a lot like a certain other massively popular comic book character popularised during the internet era. DC seizes the opportunity to remold Harley Quinn as an anti-hero and fashion her into their Deadpool, complete with a third-wave feminist style "ditching the abusive ex" narrative
      >At around the same time, the MCU is kicking into overdrive and DC wants a piece of that pie
      >Con't

        >Decide to put Harley and the Suicide Squad at the centre of that universe to match the edgier tone of Snyder's movies and capitalise on the runaway success of Deadpool
        >Cast Margot Robbie, fresh off of Wolf of Wall Street and now an international sex symbol, into the role
        >Double down on the loose juggalo look
        >The movie releases and is generally panned, but one thing stands out: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
        >ABSOLUTE POINT OF NO RETURN
        >Everyone's favourite hot girl as a loose crazy clown chick who's funny and cool and everyone loves her and her ex-boyfriend is an abusive bad boy and she's actually really smart and clever
        >Totally broke up with her abusive ex and went her own way because she's a powerful, independent woman who cannot be tamed by patriarchal norms
        >Gets to do and say whatever she wants, frick whoever she wants and suffers almost no consequences for it because she's so quirky and hot and special
        >Women go fricking NUTS - this is literally the female power fantasy made manifest
        >DCEU Harley Quinn becomes THE loose female cosplay of that year
        >Harley is now cemented in the mainstream consciousness as DC's answer to Deadpool and an anti-hero defined more by her decision to turn her back on the Joker than any affiliation with him
        >Gets her own solo movie featuring the Birds of Prey, a cartoon series, solo comic book runs, etc.
        >Naturally these all try to make her even more sympathetic and heroic so the mainstream can better identify with her
        >Fastyforward to today - Harley is basically more popular than Wonder Woman.

Can someone break down exactly what A, B, and C-list even mean? It seems to vary a lot on what characters those are.

          Anonymous

A list. The ones on lunchboxes.
B list. They can hold a book, fans love them, but they're not huge.
There is no C list. The rest are all D list.

He had a cartoon in the 90s. The only way you can claim that is saying that only Spider-Man and X-Men characters were high ranking.

Human Target had 2 live action shows. Being adapted to another medium doesn't mean they are A-listers. Iron Man's cartoon wasn't particularly successful either from what I remember. It only got 20 episodes.

Human Target is super cool and should be used more, people like him, sucks that King wrote that trash too. People who run DC Comics are morons accessing what characters people want to read more of.

    Come on, Anon.
It was ruined WAY before this.
They took a book that worked best as a couple of hot women going around the world doing Mission Impossible adventure shit and wearing disguises and things, and they added Big Barda to the mix. She works in Birds of Prey about as well as she would work in a James Bond movie. Just DC convincing themselves that what made the book work was that it had girls in it, and deciding any girls will do.

Yeah, but if you try it again and some of the characters are a little more in character, maybe it will work this time!

Man I didn't even notice this is a year late bit of synergy. I forgot that movie even existed.
