I think that the models are similarly detailed, especially the "final" forms each (with the initial show up of the pseudo godzilla in shin looking goofier/less textured and the MinusOne initial appearance being VERY goofy on the island in both its texture and the inconsistency of lighting)
I think that SGodzilla matches its scale and envrionment better and ESPECIALLY shot composition. The times it looks the worst is when it's moving quickly, like in the jerking scenes.
But EVERY scene with the MinusOne is jerky, which is my primary take on why it's visually not as good.
Likewise the general composition of the godzilla in-frame is in my opinion worse.
The nuke breath plume in particular is really offensive, as that other anon pointed out, since it's literally tweening a jpeg shopped over top of an irl volcano ran through a brown filter. Fortunately the shot is very quick, but had it looked better it WOULD have been a cool shot.
The SPEED of everything in MinusOne is my main concern, as it saps the sense of scale and heft of that Godzilla and likewise gives the devastation an abrupt and jerking sense which doesn't emphasize the gravitas of the devastation.
YES the ending train battle with Shin is goofy, but EVERY battle scene with Minus is goofy.

Actually the comparison I was thinking of was the original King Kong, which came out before Godzilla and used stop-motion which remains impressive today. Or compare Ray Harryhausens stop motion work which was made at the same time as the Japanese suitmation stuff. I find it really hard to believe that anyone could look at those two techniques and say that suitmation is better. i think they did it for practicality reasons because stop-motion or advanced puppets were too expensive. they did their best to make it look good but pretending it compares to American contemporaries of the time is ridiculous.

Minus One effects are hit or miss, sometimes it looks great others you can see the limitations. Most of it looks good in motion and in the context of the shots.

The Nippo theatre destruction was the only moment where the CGI really stood out as not that good. The way he destroyed the building feels very flat, as if it was poorly composited, not helped by how the reporters aren't flinching or bothered at rubble flying in the air. The sequence ends with a shot of Godzilla walking to the camera and the imperfections of the model were visible.

NTA but same. Godzilla's main look in the movie is too indistinct. Like a busier version of the Heisei era design. The Godzillasaurus moves in an interesting way and is legitimately scary.
I agree with both of you, the movie has a 10/10 opening. It actually feels like the sort of creepy semi-paranormal wartime story that you occasionally hear about from vets, who seem like they're being legit, and Godzilla being something more cryptic and folklorish actually is an interesting direction that the films haven't explored before. It's really what the whole movie should have been, a look back on WW2 with some sightings thrown in. Certainly beats how the rest of the movie is just a frankenstein of themes and ideas from better Godzilla movies.
And yeah, the pre-mutation Godzilla looked way cooler. More natural looking, and was able to be "scary" in ways Godzilla hasn't been before.

I really don't get why this resonated so hard with so many people. I find it far less interesting than the idea that there was a strange dinosaur on the loose during WWII that a few soldiers saw and interacted with. Everything about the scene was so cliche, and it's where it became clear what the acting was going to be like (very bad). It goes in so hard with trying to "shock" viewers by blaming the MC for the destruction, when that's pretty obvious that's how it would've been seen at the time. If anything, they could've made it more interesting by giving us a based MC who actually has the backbone to call his countrymen wrong for trying to send soldiers like him to their death, but he's just a little PTSD self-sorry b***h the entire movie. Also, I hate how all of the actors have way too much make up and perfect hair despite living in a literal post-nuclear hellscape.

Just seen this movie and it's also the first 'proper' Godzilla movie I have seen.
The biggest thing that rubs me the wrong way is how just suddenly it appears near the beginning of the movie and oh by the way it's called Gojira because some people gave it that name.
Is it that way in the original? Is that the lore?

In the original film the biggest difference is that Godzilla doesn't exist on the island as a dinosaur pre-nuclear tests. He's a creature that is resurrected by bomb tests. The name "Gojira" is from that of a god that the local natives believe in and the Government decide to call this creature Godzilla/Gojira because the natives are doing it. They assume this creature is their god and they've even started sacrificing virgin girls to him.

no, first of all, were to assume the island is his territory and hes an apex predator. a bunch of little creatures are inhabiting it, presumably not being the first time, so right off that bat hes wary, like any animal like a bear would be. he destroys the searchlight tower, because the little animal inside tried blinding him with a light, and Goji doesnt know what their motive is, so its natural for an animal to assume aggression. even afterwards, it can just be assumed Goji is curious looking around at the planes and for other people, not necessarily looking to kill them. its only after one of the men starts shooting him in the face with a gun that he starts rampaging.
Goji could very well be some supernatural entity, but he isnt explicitly evil

That's not the impression I got from it, only the mechanic and the pilot knew about the ejection, all the others were surprised (along with us) that he was still alive. At least the movie play as a plot twist.
Godzilla in water was the best stuff in the movie, I've always wanted more of that. Godzilla vs submarines would be nice to see next time.

I really expected to see Godzilla in a city again by the end. I thought the pilot was going to atract Godzilla to the sea from Tokyo, but instead he barely leaves the water, wrecks some farms, and returns to the sea. I'm guessing it was a budget issue because the movie was asking for it and it felt rushed, like something was going to be there. It really felt like both a wasted opportunity and a needed scene to make this movie perfect.
