Anyone who agrees with Kira is a weak-minded fool. L (and Near especially) were right about him. One man should not be able to decide if a person deserves the death penalty. There is a reason the legal system is so complex and not just "kill criminals until no more criminals exist."

Here's how I would do it:
                >Death Note can completely control a person's actions for up to 23 days before their death.
                >Pick 10 high profile names; billionaires, politicians, world leaders, or other people in positions of power
                >Write that they spend 22 days secretly gathering all of the evidence they have of any crimes they've committed, and the crimes of others
                >Conspiracies, state secrets, child trafficking, corruption, corporate wrongdoing, all the shit they try to hide
                >On day 23 they all make their evidence as public as possible, on multiple platforms, both digital and physical
                >And all die of a heart attack at the exact same moment.
                >Wait several years for the dust to clear, see how many convictions there have been based on the evidence provided
                >If the world has noticed and started making things better, do nothing
                >If there have been a string of coverups, people fleeing justice, Esptein style "suicides", take action
                >Pick another 10 names, should be plenty to choose from going off the last groups evidence
                >Rinse and repeat until society starts to improve somewhat.

In total you'd only kill at most 10 innocent people, if somehow all of the first 10 names are themselves innocent. But after that you'd only be choosing high profile people that you know have committed crimes based on the evidence provided by the others.
Clean, efficient, and impossible to be caught because these are well known names, and they all die at the same time no matter where they are in the world.

ACKSHUALLY there's a rule specifically about this
          >If you write "dies from disease" and specify which disease but not a time of death, if the progression of the disease takes more than 24 days, the 23-Day rules will not take effect and the human will die at an appropriate time depending on the disease. However, rewriting the cause and/or details of death must be done within six minutes and 40 seconds: you cannot change the victim's time of death, however soon it may be.

So? They were innocent people investigating a crime, by what possible morality do they deserve the death sentence Kira gave them? He mudered at least two innocent people to protect himself, how is he different from any of the prisoners he killed?

The manga also mentions that he kills suspects, when he was doing the "I take a chip... and eat it!" scene he kills two people who are only suspected of robbery and bribery, not even convicted criminals. These people might have been innocent, but he didn't care.

Well yeah it’s self defense. The two were hardly innocent. It isn’t like they were some innocent bystanders who happened to find out who Kira was. They willingly provoked him. What else was Light supposed to do? Just let himself get caught and turned in? They signed up for the job, they knew what they were getting themselves into. People keep citing Ray Penber and Naomi Misora as fricked up deaths but it just doesn’t work frankly. What Light did was self defense and the fact that people cite two people who willingly provoked Kira as the most fricked up light moment in the series and not the part where he almost killed his own sister is incredibly jarring to me.

Just like any random thief who shoots a cop or security guard trying to stop them. A cop killer. A scumbag. A murderer. Alternatively, all deaths occur at exactly the same moment, once a day or once a week at the exact same time. No random heart attacks, just a wave of death occuring regularly like clockwork. Every criminal huddled in fear, dreading that time coming around again, knowing the second the clock hits midnight (or whatever) their heart could just stop.

They just die of a heart attack instead, the book can't make them do impossible things. We already know that Ryuk will kill Light should he get caught or whatever, so I can UNDERSTAND why he’d kill those two. I don’t agree with it, but I certainly get why he’d do it. Of course we all understand why he did it, but it's still murder. If a serial killer finds a cop snooping around the shed where he keeps all the bodies, killing that cop is a perfectly logical way for him to protect himself from prosecution, but it's still murder. It's still a guy killing a cop so he can keep getting away with crimes. To claim that Light is somehow morally right in killing those people is just wrong; he's a murderer who knowingly killed multiple innocent people.

I don't think it's a tragedy, it's just an important example in the "Light was a good guy" argument. Killing people who "deserve to die" is one thing, killers and pedos and whatever yeah kill as many as you want, but killing a cop or an innocent widow to protect your own ass is scummy criminal behavior. People try to defend it as a moral choice for various reasons, but killing innocent people for your own agenda is immoral. Light's a murderer, not a hero.

The majority of his victims were already in prison though, people who had already been tried and sentenced. Good chance many of the people he killed were innocent too, he doesn't actually know who's guilty of what, he just fully trusts the Japanese legal system.
That's the whole point, he's the son of a cop and is convinced the world is black and white, good or bad, innocent or guilty. There's no such thing as a good person who made one mistake, or a bad person who has changed and regrets their crimes, who might actually be rehabilitated and become a productive member of society after serving their sentence. You need to research the Japanese legal system, they have a 99% conviction rate and it's well known that they pressure people into "confessing" for crimes they didn't commit, many many such cases that the Japanese media tries to cover up. Even if only 1%, or 0.1% of the criminals were wrongly convicted (and it's likely to be much higher) that still means he executed hundreds or thousands of innocent people.

IIRC just the fact that they were suspected of a crime, even if they didn't commit it, is itself an example of 'nail that sticks up get the hammer' and thus justifies imprisonment/punishment morally.

Yes. The argument of reforming prisoners makes sense from a globohomosexual perspective, more tax payers = good. From the perspective of humanity, crime should be punished as a deterrent. There's no such thing as a good person who made one mistake, and there's no such thing as a bad person who should be forgiven because they're sorry.

When you get back to school, ask a teacher what the real world is like, only a child would say something this naive. You can go to jail for manslaughter, meaning if someone tries to rape your wife, you punch them, and they crack their head on the pavement, you can go to jail for killing someone even though you did nothing morally wrong. Even normal self defence isn't an automatic free pass, many people who were only trying to protect themselves have ended up in jail for accidentally taking a life.

It's not a bad example though, it's actually a perfect example. It's a crime that everyone agrees here shouldn't be a crime; killing someone to protect your own life or the life of your family shouldn't land you a criminal conviction. But sometimes it does. Not all the time, maybe not even most of the time, but sometimes it does happen. That's what makes it a good example. There are people in prison all over the world right at this moment who are only there because someone attacked them, or their family, and they accidentally killed the person responsible.
And if Kira was real, those men who were only trying to protect their loved ones could just randomly keel over at any moment, because Light happened to glance at their file and see that they killed someone. Morally we agree they shouldn't have even been there, but that doesn't matter to Kira because he kills criminals. If you can think of a better example let us know, but that seems perfect to me.

Do you have a source for this? This is surprising to me, I thought convictions for rape were way lower than the number of accusations, false or otherwise.
But yeah you could use the example of someone genuinely innocent of the crime they're convicted of, but I was talking about a "good person making a mistake", as in a generally good and law abiding person committing a crime because of their circumstances, i.e. wife attacked by a scumbag. Light doesn't seem to believe that a person like that might still be good and worthy of mercy, to him a criminal is a criminal and a killer is a killer.

I haven't read the manga since high school but I think I remember Kira or one of the policemen mentioning that once or twice. You could chalk up those wrongful deaths as collateral cost since it'll only happen at the beginning (no more accidental imprisonments once crime rate goes down to near zero). Not to mention the fact he’s created his own violent megalomaniacal system of total summary execution anyways so he’s really not just some innocent guy just living his life is he. Nothing about the justice system says they all have to be killed, that was Light’s idea

But he's using that system to make his executions. He's blindly trusting that anyone convicted of a crime deserves death even though he knows for a fact that many people are wrongly convicted. His dad's a cop and he's supposedly a genius; he knows that some of the names he's writing down are of innocent people, and he simply does not care.

I would absolutely not blame the justice system, the world or anyone for my family’s murderer not having been already summarily executed for prior lesser crimes that don’t beget the death sentence. I would be torn up and hate the guy, maybe have some problems with society in an abstract sense, but no I absolutely wouldn’t jump to ‘if they had just killed everyone in prison this guy wouldn’t have been able to do this’, that’s largely insane

I think the most impressive thing about Death Note is how it pretty easily reveals who in society condone killing criminals on the whole.

It's like a more nuanced version of The Punisher for manga nerds instead of comic nerds specifically.

The premise of Death Note is interesting and unique and the emo aesthetics are kind of nostalgic, but the execution sucks. I've seen some of its fans claim that it is morally complex or a story of good intentions going wrong, but in actuality Light is completely deranged and evil right away. He declares himself a living god by the end of episode one and seems to relish killing innocent people before the first arc is even over. Fans also claim that Light is so brilliant, but he actually makes numerous mistakes when irl even a moderately intelligent person equipped with such godlike power could easily get away with it forever because the notion that someone is remotely controlling these heart attacks is just too fantastical to even consider. Then the final third of the show seems to be unanimously regarded as garbage. Most overrated anime ever and that's saying something.

That’s the point, it’s evil to summarily execute anyone and the only moral way to use the death note would be not to use it. Light is actually a narcissistic perfectionist who believes he is above all society and has resentment for people and any fun they might have because he’s jealous he chooses to work all day. He’s a psychological mess and that’s a big part of the story, it’s hilarious to me some people watch this show and buy his bullshit

Don't forget that you don't have to give someone a heart attack. You can just have them an hero or something.

Yeah he did lmao. They literally show he started with the more extreme crimes and then when those were weeded out he went for lower tier crimes and repeated. You know he killed 120,000 people in Japan, so you suppose that’s equal only to the amount of murderers and rapists in that time?

They didn't show anything, Light simply stated that he started out with the worst but then moved on to other but there were still limits and was angry with Mikami when he punishment those he felt didn't deserve it.

This is from chapter 17, Light kills two *suspects* of bribery and robbery just to take suspicion off of himself. It never addresses if these two people were actually even guilty, but clearly Light wasn't too concerned about the whole "evil intent" thing.

Yes but that was something he did to take suspicion off himself, under those circumstances he would have no problem killing innocent but if he's just focused on changing the world then that's not the case.

      >fans claim that it is morally complex or a story of good intentions going wrong, but in actuality Light is completely deranged and evil right away.
The moral complexity comes from the fact that Light was able to stop wars and reduce crime rates by 70% so the only way to stop him was to risk starting wars and increasing global crime rates.
      >Fans also claim that Light is so brilliant, but he actually makes numerous mistakes when irl even a moderately intelligent person equipped with such godlike power could easily get away with it forever because the notion that someone is remotely controlling these heart attacks is just too fantastical to even consider.

Yeah light got the job done but he was evil, pretty decent transaction. He really is like a dark knight but that doesn’t mean he’s not super fricking evil. You just trade your soul and morality for reducing the crime rate. One doesn’t pay for the other, you just have both happen

        >compelled by boredom and ego to challenge his opponents in a risky cat and mouse chase instead of simply hiding himself.
This is fanfiction, it's inaccurate. Light's only motivation was to remove crime from the world and set himself up as a silent, unknown God, he wasn't some thrill junkie getting off on almost being caught.
L getting so close to discovering him so quickly was because Light made mistakes, not because he wanted to lure L into some kind of game. Killing Lind L. Tailor was a genuine frickup, and he reacts with surprise and anger when he finds out L had set a trap for him. He was smart, but he was careless in the beginning and was too arrogant to assume anyone would be able to find him so quickly. Then he spends the rest of the story desperately trying to avoid being discovered,

That's not really what you said though, he isn't "compelled by ego and boredom", he just knows L will catch him if he doesn't take him out first. But the only reason L was able to narrow him down so quickly in the first place was because Light was sloppy and left too many clues. He wouldn't need to respond to L at all if he he wasn't already so close to finding him out.

He screams in terror and fear and then puts on a menacing face saying he has this all under control, has no fear of demons, and that he’s planning to become a God. That’s power tripping after a fear reaction, even if planned
                > No he was usually insulted by the idea of getting caught/played like when he got back home after meeting L for the first time.
With Lind L Tailor he was power tripping thinking he was in control able to instantly win against who he thought was L, then L speaks on screen and he, yes is insulted by loss of control, but also has a fear reaction to loss of control. In this moment his self-image as an untouchable genius god is shattered, he begins to freak out, then he recovers his sense of godhood by quickly inventing a way he would still be in control. That’s an adrenaline reaction to the risk of being caught and tried as a non-god murderer. Do you really think Light is stable and calm the whole time? He goes into mania when his plans don’t work, and immediately turns that into megalomania recovering his sense of godhood with a new plan

Right, meaning he was scared by demon and only after learning he had not come to kill him does he assert control by claiming to become a God. Light has fears and concerns but he quickly settles them with planning and self-narrative. In the exact panel you posted Light (and L too) is telling himself he is righteous, that’s self-narrative. A good amount of the dialogue is Light thinking to himself about who he is, and reminding himself who he thinks he is after being at risk.

He’s swearing an oath to succeed in killing the person who threatens his plot of godhood. His approach was dumb but killing innocents isn't the problem. In fact, the best use of the Death Note would be proactive. Killing innocent people that is on their way to become criminals. That way you'll be attacking specific lifestyles that turn people bad. Specifical beliefs that send people on a wrong path. Eventually people would stop living those lifestyles or thinking those ideas. That would be the real utopia.

    You don't get it
Killing innocents was acceptable, their deaths still contributed towards his goal
The main point was to get the entire world aware of the idea that
    >you possibly did a crime?
    >then you die
With the notion that universal awareness of this would eventually stop 99% of crime or even crime-adjacent behavior simply because people would be so fricking terrified of getting nuked by God for being le bad

The current system is already leading to lots of killings of innocent people by being so ineffective. Light's methods led to the deaths of some innocents, yes, but it actually worked. It led to crime dropping off massively, 70 percent less crime in seven years. More innocents would have died if Light Yagami didn't start using the Death Note.

Kira isn’t a good guy the way Heisenberg or Tony Soprano are good guys. Kira ultimately just wanted to be God and play high stakes wargames with L. That said I am team Kira but he’s definitely just evil/unhinged and sees himself as above everyone else that need his saving. Maybe it comes from some misplaced moral good but it boils down to “You are disgusting, I’m not, therefore you die because I say.” Kira thought that he was in the right no matter what BECAUSE he believed himself to be above everyone else, so he was evil for that definitely at least.

the show cut out like half of everything that happens after L dies, the reason near and mello feel so incomplete is because almost every scene where they shine was either shortened, changed or cut out completely. There is an entire arc with mello and light manipulating the us president that just isn't in the show, or near's reasoning as to why mikami must be kira, it was probably budget constraints but with 10 more episodes the later half of death note would be much better

Dunning-Kruger effect: The Post. It's an inconsequential page that at best shows Light as a bored genius.

A mother waiting for his son's national exam results and not even asking him "How was your day?" is never a good thing. People think that Light's boredom at the first episode is coming from his narcissism. But that's not true. He is bored because he never done anything true to himself, never for himself. Light saw himself as a "tool" to do "what expected from him"

Look at the picrel. This is a man who guessed that book is something otherworldly and he was ready to be eternally punished for it. This is not how narcissistic people operates. Remember his lines at the first episode after killing the dudes who tried to rape a girl. "Only I can do it, others can not" This is because he thinks he is the best tool to do what needs to be done. We, people who live in western culture, don't understand how oppressive asian culture is towards people, especially children. I'm not saying that Kira was a good guy but asian culture and their family structure is fricked up. Most people in japan don't even hug their family. Never hugged by their parents etc. I know anons will laugh at this but it's the truth.

Okay, maybe you aren't as stupid as I thought, but it was already established in the series that the Death Note warps people into something ugly. When Light loses his memories, it was shown that he wasn't as huge a shithead as he transformed to. I think the overall moral for Light's character, aside from any social commentary regarding Asian culture, is that absolute power corrupts absolutely and people with good intentions can go horribly astray.

            >Death Note warps people into something ugly.
            Exactly. Look at this post

I don't think resentment theory has legs. As I said before, we are looking through our western lens. He is not a some nerd with excellent grades. Light was a total rockstar in Japan. He could drown himself in pussy. Good at sports, good at classes, extremely good looking. People (men and women) always tried to hang out with him. And it's heavily implied that he doesn't needed to work that hard to be n1 in japan. The thing is, if you don't see yourself as a person, you will neglect the things a normal human being would enjoy. You don't need them because you're not a person. You're a tool. And a tool needs to accomplish things. It doesn't matter if its in sports or exams. You've to do what expected from you. This is his fricked up mindset.

Also, most people forget that when Light lost his memories, he genuinely tried to catch Kira and didn't like L's fishy ways. He tried to do things while having a moral compass, unlike L. This is stark contrast from his Kira self.

            [...]
Exactly. Kira just took it to the extreme because he has the means to do it: DN. It's not a coincidence that L, M and N aren't Japaneses.

Light was basically Japan's Aristotelian Tragic Hero
            >Aristotle's tragic heroes are flawed individuals who commit, without evil intent, great wrongs or injuries that ultimately lead to their misfortune, often followed by tragic realization of the true nature of events that led to this destiny.[3] This means the hero still must be – to some degree – morally grounded. The usual irony in Greek tragedy is that the hero is both extraordinarily capable and highly moral (in the Greek honor-culture sense of being duty-bound to moral expectations), and it is these exact, highly-admirable qualities that lead the hero into tragic circumstances. The tragic hero is snared by his own greatness: extraordinary competence, a righteous passion for duty, and (often) the arrogance associated with greatness (hubris).

For me it’s his resentment that people get to be happy without spending their entire life studying and working as per his own expectation for excellence possibly inherited through his stickler chief of police father. Basically he’s ‘smart’ enough to know work and focus is the only engine of productivity in this world and he fricking hates anyone who doesn’t hold themselves to that standard as highly as him
