By using the government to capture the industry they were able to control the supply of medical professionals raising the prices. Because doctors decided they weren't getting paid enough they eroded part of the social fabric of America that kept people alive through the Great Depression. Every single time the government has intervened in the medical industry overheads have increased which increased costs for the common man. Fraternal organizations were once so widespread that ~1/3 of Americans were members of one. Look at this scene from the Flintstones referencing something once common and normal, but now alien to us because of the greed of the educated.
