imagine if the casted a beautiful girl who could actually act and actually had the whole trilogy's story laid out before they started just randomly filming them. imagine if any effort at all went into this beyond the special effects(done by the remnants of Lucas Film).
Imagine if they casted someone like Natalie Portman again, who did great in the prequels despite how odd her roll was. She was a 'strong woman' but also a tiny petite princess who needed saving. Padme was such a better character than Rey, had better character development and backstory and motives, etc and she was just a side character, a plot device that needed to exist, luke and leia's mother, but turned out into such a great character that resonated with lots of girls and boy and adults and children and teenagers.
Where as Rey completely failed to resonate with anyone. because not many young girls grow up as orphans and live alone and are the best at everything at their first try and handled situations better than any other characters in the story. she just wasnt good character.
not entirely the actress fault, the writing was horrible and the underlying idealogy and poor planning and foresight really fricked this trilogy from the top down. but like it or not she is the face of it as the main lead and she SUCKED. people fanboyed the villain and the comic relief sidekick Black more than her.
Like I said in another post, this is the case of buying an audience versus earning it. Disney never in its entire history earned male audience.

You'd think they would have learned from Lucas' mistakes in Phantom Menace. He tried to tap the girl market. Queen Armadillo kept changing outfits to sell a line of dolls that afaik nobody bought. I get that's more classic girl marketing but Lucas was pretty good at that shit, and figured the types of girls who liked laser swords and spaceships were already there, and he wanted the rest to have something but it didn't work

The main character being a girl was far from the actual problem. It was everything else surrounding her that was bad. If Rey was actually hot, was allowed to have sex appeal, was written well, and was the center of a compelling story arc spanning three movies, and Lucasfilm wasn't woke about her, and the press was not hostile against critics and fans about her them nobody would mind. She could have been Leia from ANH or Padme from AOTC ascended to main character status for example but no.
