Isn't that Family Guy?
Futurama didn't have people throwing up and its jokes were "Haha aren't sexy women sexy?" rather than "Haha isn't feral sexy?"
Also the political reference was Al Gore instead of Hitler Fascism Hitler.
Calling something overrated implies that you believe you are better than the vast majority of people. It's an inherently snobby word to use. I don't like it.
I loved it growing up. But seeing other people just thinking it's so so. It's weird to me cause I think everything just clicks. 1, Interesting premise 2, an interesting world 3, a unique, large, and interesting cast of characters 4, knows how to balance comedy and drama 5, knows how to balance episodic and serialized storytelling.
Like what else do you need from a show? How is it overrated? It has everything a show needs to be good. OP I am interested in your point of view. Please tell a Boomer like me why this show is considered "underrated" by zoomers?
It's overrated because:
1. It was always brought up as an example of a "brainy" show by iamsosmart redditors because it had science based jokes that normies wouldn't get, when it has maybe 3 or 4 jokes in it's entire run that that are actually science based.
2. The forced sappiness really gets cloying with the episodes about the dog waiting for Fry, the brother astronaut and the relationship with Leela. People just wouldn't shut up about how those episodes made them bawl their eyes out.
3. It's just not as funny as the Simpsons were at their peak, not even the early seasons.
>It was always brought up as an example of a "brainy" show by iamsosmart redditors because it had science based jokes that normies wouldn't get, when it has maybe 3 or 4 jokes in it's entire run that that are actually science based.
See, but that's because it's being compared to its contemporaries. Are there really so many brainy animated comedies that Futurama doesn't deserve a mention? I know you didn't say "animated" but I'm sure those are what people are thinking of when they cite Futurama.
>. It was always brought up as an example of a "brainy" show by iamsosmart redditors because it had science based jokes that normies wouldn't get, when it has maybe 3 or 4 jokes in it's entire run that that are actually science based
nah David x Cohen got in tons of jokes. just in the Internet episode alone there's like a dozen jokes about how a dead end had the symbol for infinite resistance and so on
they weren't the best jokes in the world but if you know obscure little math tech and physics stuff its all over that show
1. I have never heard anyone talk about Futurama like it's a show for intellectuals. But then again I don't troll around reddit for opinions on old cartoons. IRL everyone I know who liked the show just thought it was a good show. I know smart and dumb people who like it.
2. Honestly those episodes really hit me hard. it didn't come off as cheap easy sappy BS. They earned my tears. The dog waiting for Fry, for example, they really show you how much they meant to each other. And they cut back and forth from Fry trying to get his dog back to how much they met to each other. They establish the character's relationship in the B plot while using the A plot to bring them back together. And the ultimate choice of Fry seemingly making the mature decision to not bring him back because he would have forgotten him by the time he was old, is heartbreaking cause he never stopped waiting. Like I feel like it's the perfect example of melding a cool premise and an emotional gut punch all in one. Plus the writing is so efficient and smart. What I said here goes for the fry's brother episode too. Do you like episodes that make you cry? Just curious, cause maybe you just don't like sad episodes of shows.
As for the "will they or won't they" with Leela I can see how that could be annoying. I still dig it though.
3. Nothing is as funny as classic ara Simpsons. But Futurama had a more interesting world/characters and a much cooler all-around vibe. You also got to experience more variety of things.
At the end of the day. It's all just opinions but I would be interested in knowing what kind of stuff you like. Just name like five shows. It would help me better understand your point of view.
Yes. The first 2-3 seasons are the only good ones. It does have some solid heart tugging scenes in the later seasons. I'm still mad that they retconned Seymour and damaged one of the most melancholy stand out episodes of the show. If you don't know what i mean in the movie where Bender is trying to kill Fry and fast fossilizes him with a laser. The worst form of story telling is when shit has to be so interconnected/REMEMBER THAT that it starts to strip meaning away from earlier parts. I guess that is what zombifying means though.
I'd like to think there are actually two timelines from Bender's Big Score. The original timeline is the canon timeline where Fry vanished from everybody's lives on January 1st, 2000. The corrupt timeline is corrupted because the Fry that becomes Lars deviated from what was supposed to happen. He knew the entire time that living in the 21st century is not what happened and against what was established. He tried and failed to cheat time.
We know the original timeline is the canon timeline because Fry's mom had a dream of Fry where Fry appears on January 1st, 2000.

Bender's Big Score states multiple times that the time code is a "paradox-free" time code. It's their get-out-of-jail free card to mess with canon. This is how Bender is able to go back in time to steal monuments without disrupting the timeline. Hell, in the same movie, Bender goes back and murders Hermes just to steal him a new body. If time travel stuff actually affected canon, Hermes would be dead. Seymour still died waiting on the sidewalk.
The only episode i genuinely enjoy of later Futurama seasons is the common cold episode. Because it feels like something that could happen as a earlier Futurama episode and we get to see some scenes/emotion from Fry's father who otherwise had no connection to anyone. It doesn't take away from anything. I guess the mother scene was good too.
I bought it thinking I could play PS2 games on the PSP lol
Eventually got to play it, it was fun but I remember the Leela level in the sun being a drag. And the Bender one in the canyons
Game probably peaked with the Fry levels, the secret was frustrating difficulty. I liked Bender's levels too but they were definitely easier. Leela's levels sucked and was the section of the game with the most padding. Still, the campaign wasn't too long and the cutscenes were funny.
I liked the Planet Express level and some of the New New York stuff but the other levels dragged on too much imo and the gameplay could be frustrating. The Leela levels were hardest for me, Zoidberg and the last level felt easier. Good story though. I like that they included a cutscene movie on one of the dvds and called it the lost adventure or something. The entire game is basically one big Anthology of Interest episode.

I think the showrunners and writers are very aware we're all sick of their ambiguous relationship status. I bet the opening stinger for the upcoming season is Fry proposing to Leela, signifying that there will be changes over the new episodes.
That's the problem with the "will they or won't they" trope. It becomes less interesting after they get together. now they are just a couple. I kind of like them being ambiguous although it could be interesting seeing them settle down and have kid's etc or it could ruin the magic of the show.
You know they will
Honestly Fry and Leela getting together kinda made them boring
Would bet good money the first episode of the new reboot will be about Fry not getting vaccinated.
I think the showrunners and writers are very aware we're all sick of their ambiguous relationship status. I bet the opening stinger for the upcoming season is Fry proposing to Leela, signifying that there will be changes over the new episodes.
The problem is that Fry and Leela's dynamic as a couple isn't really that funny. When Leela is ordering Fry around and Fry is acting like a child, that's funny, when they're being all flirty and sneaking kisses, that's not funny.
If Fry and Leela married, I don't think their dynamic would change at all. Leela's still captain and Fry's still dumb. Leela's still going to yell at Fry, but now she'll probably be nagging him often. They could push the two being romantic into the background like
No, frick you.
and bring it to the forefront for an episode or two every season.
I’m just annoyed that it’s coming back again
How many times does this show need to be revived? It already had what? 3 good endings?
Four episodes were written to work as series finales- "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings", Into the Wild Green Yonder (movie), "Overclockwise", and "Meanwhile".
Oh absolutely. You think the writers won’t introduce Zoidberg with >What happened to that nice girl you were dating? >Ah! It wasn’t meant to last. She had no smell, but she had no good taste either!
And bam, he’s back to being the depressed loser of the show they can pull out for a quick laugh.
This is the what? 3rd time they’re reviving the series? I’m expecting heavy character flanderization
They really should have all pop cultural references be relevant to the 20th century. No Tron: Legacy or Kardashians, instead original Tron and Nirvana. It needs to be stuff Fry knew before he got frozen.
For some reason some people won't allow their heroes to be descended from "villains". The Simpsons couldn't even have a slave owner in the family and made them 1/64th black to show how "good" they inherently are. Same thing with Frozen where the grandpa committed genocide but "it's okay 'cuz they're half native therefore half oppressed".
I'm watching it right now, some episodes are forgettable but pretty much always moderately enjoyable at a baseline. Many episodes are great or even outright classics. It's a pretty great show overall
Any offspring Fry and Leela have are expected to possess some sort of power. What kind of power, I don't know. It's probably something related with the mind like telekinesis or mind control.
No, it's pretty fairly rated by most people. It has some shitty episodes and some really good ones. It has some episodes which are honestly overhyped but overall is a fairly enjoyable show, even at its worst.
Some people see it as God's gift to animated TV. Some see it as an overrated shitshow all around.
They are both wrong.
There are now more bad episodes than good episodes, if that's what you mean.
proto-R&M
Always was.

It's a good show that had its time. I am going to binge it again soon because I like it so much
No
When I was younger I loved it, now I only enjoy like 3 episodes.
Calling something overrated implies that you believe you are better than the vast majority of people. It's an inherently snobby word to use. I don't like it.
No, frick you.
What's wrong with Bender?
From "Assie Come Home"- he gave his ass away.
Then how is he sitting?
He used a substitute.

burden of proof lies on you bro
nice cope
interesting
>modern Simpson tier
Frick off, it never got that bad
You're overrated
no you
harsh
Honestly, yeah. It's still really good though
what was your favorite movie/ finale special, mine was Into the wild green yonder because of deep lore
This is a show that was actually better off being canceled the first time. Arrested Development is another.
Show fell off when they dropped the "let me ax you something" use of Ebonics replacing "ask." I think it was mid-season one.
No they used it later. It was in the Roswell episode atleast, when they are buying a microwave
It's not very funny
American Dad is better

*Overrated (sorry for the spelling error)
It’s still loved by mostly everyone including zoomers, this is just classic Cinemaphilentrarianism in action
It's overrated because:

You must really hate Futurama because the Simpsons were never funny.

Stopped reading here, most of my interactions online with people reviewing Futurama was before reddit was even a thing. You missed out, zoomer.
me need fanservice in new season
We need to see Leela pregnant.
>the fanservice was only added to futurama in the first place cause some fox executive asked for it
bless that coomer
Yes. The first 2-3 seasons are the only good ones. It does have some solid heart tugging scenes in the later seasons. >implying Season 4 was bad
Frick you revisionist c**ts.
>Season 4 was in 2002
Oh frick, I thought that was the movie season, my bad.
Then yeah S1-4 is good, rest are trash
Bender's Big Score states multiple times that the time code is a "paradox-free" time code. It's their get-out-of-jail free card to mess with canon. The first 3 seasons were fun good episodes
Everything after is mediocre or boring or trash
People still upset over Seymore Asses need to get over it
Alternate Fry went back in time and took care of him
Has anyone ever played the Futurama game? I actually really liked it. Never got past the Zoidberg level though.
I bought it thinking I could play PS2 games on the PSP lol
Eventually got to play it, it was fun but I remember the Leela level in the sun being a drag. And the Bender one in the canyons

It's a really tricky game to get accustomed to, kid me couldn't finish it. Still like it.
I just hope they don't break Fry and Leela up in the reboot and continue the "will they won't they" bullshit.
You know they will
Honestly Fry and Leela getting together kinda made them boring

I'd be shocked if it isn't replacing Nixon with Trump.
Oh god.
Wasted potential. Too often the jokes were contemporary pop culture references. Once is funny, every episode is lazy.
They really should have all pop cultural references be relevant to the 20th century. No Tron: Legacy or Kardashians, instead original Tron and Nirvana. It needs to be stuff Fry knew before he got frozen.
It did help ruin She-Hulk & otherthings.
Thoughts on the coming reboot? It has no chance of being good does it?
it was just from OK to real good
I'll admit that I fricking froth Disenchantment like nothing else. Greatly prefer it to both peak Simpsons and Futurama.
God you're horny
Defended this show for a while but Season 4 was so bad that I dropped it 3 episodes in.
Yes anon yes
>buys Mars
>the gift it back to martians AKA"its rightful owners"
The frick were they thinking?
For some reason some people won't allow their heroes to be descended from "villains". Same thing with Frozen where the grandpa committed genocide but "it's okay 'cuz they're half native therefore half oppressed".
Starts well, gets worse and worse as it goes on, I don't know why
I think the humor just gets a little too smart for me
Zoidberg is the best
i haven't watched anything past the devils hands are idle playthings. can't be bothered.
I’d say the first movie is worth a watch, it’s like The Simpsons Movie, not really that good or funny but an experience
nah
its still really funny
No, it's fricking great.
Don't care, I just wanna frick Amy and Leela
Mainly Leela as I rub her breasts from behind
>Leela! This is no time to show me your boobs!
Final season wasn't fantastic, but it got a few laughs out of me.
Fry is hot
I'm watching it right now, some episodes are forgettable but pretty much always moderately enjoyable at a baseline. Many episodes are great or even outright classics. It's a pretty great show overall
Fry and Leela overthrowing the universe with their freaky mutant babies when?
Any offspring Fry and Leela have are expected to possess some sort of power. What kind of power, I don't know. It's probably something related with the mind like telekinesis or mind control.
I legitimately do not care for Fry and Leela as a couple
Too bad.
Shut the frick up, my dad likes it.
Futurama didn't have Jeff Fischer, Steve and the Boys (Snot, Toshi and Barry), The Golden Turd and Stan's Beach Song, that's why it sucks.
Yup we're boned
No, it's pretty fairly rated by most people. It has some shitty episodes and some really good ones. It has some episodes which are honestly overhyped but overall is a fairly enjoyable show, even at its worst.
