      Anonymous

Arrival is based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, in the book the aliens don’t ever give a reason for visiting and there’s no military plot like in the film where they’re gonna blow each other up. It’s much better IMO but I can see why they would change a couple things to make it work as a movie.

Because then the future would be what you changed it to, and not what it is, understand?

            Anonymous

That's different. What you're describing is a potential answer for an entity to not WANT to change the future, not whether they can or cannot. The aliums want to change the future. It's their motivation. If they know they can't, what is their reason for attempting to?
In other words; why didn't Abbott even attempt to evade the blast? It's the same thematic circumstance of the entire mission, just on a smaller scale, but Abbott does nothing, because... ?

              Anonymous

They don’t want to change the future their time is nonlinear their future is already happening all they’re doing is getting help from humanity by making their time non-linear too, which they’ve already done in their future. It’s kind of mindfricky to think about so I get the confusion, it’s like the more you think about it the more confusing it gets. I dunno if the movie answers if they can change events, like if the protag could refuse children so her child never gets born and never has to die prematurely but either way Abbott died for one or two reasons, either he always dies there and he has no choice or he died to save them because it was for the greater good. But the more you think about it the more holes the movie gets, like I guess he could write a message to push the bomb out of the ship or something.

No she doesn't. There is no other option but the order of events which happen in the movie, nothing is changed. That's the entire point.
