Make Mandy a little younger ie 12/13 with Mar'i being 16-18. Maybe it could actually turn out that trying to be the perfect daughter for her mother is stressful to her, but that could be too cliche. I’m leaning on her Mom actually being satisfied with how her daughter is turning out, but maybe she could be really hard on instead? At the end of the day, they’re a foil to Mandy and Starfire, and it sets up scenarios where the mother and daughter can fight side by side.
The other idea I have that is equally fleshed out is a dudebro type villain who constantly fatshames Mandy… not because he genuinely thinks she’s ugly, but because he has a degradation fetish. (Although I also imagine he has a bunch of frat buddies as henchmen who genuinely think Mandy’s hideous.) He even takes photos of her in compromising situations and posts them on questionable forums, causing her to be infamous on the internet either for being called ugly or being fetishized. Then I have one especially barely formed idea of a villain that’s just thinly veiled NTR bait for Claire, but the villain is specifically female.

I just use the default pencil in Clip Studio Paint. And for the glow I just used the default transparent water color, concentrated the color in the middle and then just spread it out a bit. Not very hard effect to pull off.

To be fair I think this is a more realistic end result of either two athletes having a kid or a alien and human having a kid. Seems like star is powered by the sun and maybe her powers burn weight faster or she eats less because of her being partially nourished by solar energy.

You can criticize a lot of things about this comic and be right- but the idea the comic’s theme is that Starfire is sucks and not that expectations can be crushing wouldn’t be a good example. Mandy’s true conflict was never with her mother, even within the original text. It was really about her own self image and how other people either expected her to be a superpowered bombshell superhero like her mom, and are disappointed that she isn’t, or they just want to talk to Mandy to get proximity to Starfire because their superhero fans. The fact that Starfire is a perfectly loving and logical parent , (in spite of Mandy claiming Starfire dislikes of her looks) seems to prove that. Mandy’s a grouchy self righteous teen, so of course she’s an unreliable narrator. Going goth and not caring about going to college is just her goofy maladaptive coping mechanisms.
I mean my point was they didn't lean into it enough though. See you could make this a really great premise and sadly that goes with most modern comics/YA DC comics the base idea is fine if maybe a bit out of the superhero genre. But you can make them work, like Batman in HS could have worked that's basically like 1/3 of the gotham series, but they usually muddy down the themes with other melodrama and bs that just makes you disconnect. You could say the main theme is about a girl who has identity problems and wants to get better but we don't see that we just see a girl that is lashing out at the world and being a c**t with very little introspection from her. She very much is barely a character in her own story as most of her plot points are given or told to her, like how she paralleled blackfire for whatever reason how star always loved her as she was. Most of her story is just weirdly portrayed without doing the foot work to make us understand or like mandy. But as you said it's there but if us fans have to cope and put it together bit by bit then the writers have failed miserably.

It feels like a huge wasted opportunity to not have more scenes between Mandy and Starfire. Most of the school scenes feel unnecessary. The main focus should be on Mandy and starfire and the expectations put upon her. Once concept that isn't often explored is how starfire's alien traditions may have effected Mandy's single parent upbringing.

They're evenly matched but blackfire takes aim at Mandy and starfire takes the hit for Mandy. Before blackfire can finish them off Mandy fires her first starbolt at blackfire giving them time to escape.
She takes her mom to the Titans who plan to take on blackfire before she comes to finish star off. Nightwing has a heart to heart with Mandy about why her mom was so adamant about her controlling her powers was because she knew blackfire would eventually come for her and she wanted her to be prepares. As the Titans go to take on blackfire's army Mandy decides that she has to finish this herself. She confronts blackfire and challenges her to a 1 on 1. Blackfire is much stronger and faster but as Mandy fights she remembers her mother's lessons and begins to keep pace with her more and more. It ends with a big clash between the two and blackfire taunts her saying "You're weak just like your mother." And instead of her recurring line if "I'm not my mother" she says "My mother is not weak!" And defeating blackfire.
Actually these are good ideas anon, another good one if you want to focus on the France thing and Star physiology thing. Imagine she plans to go to france without learning the language because well my mom can learn languages through kissing so of course I can mentalitly. IE there's a fruit on tamaran that is a lot like oranges which male tamaranian warriors use to bulk up fast, essentially a steroid. And have them genetically be inclined to fricking love them. I mean, I kinda get it, at least for fixit fics. I Am Not Starfire is an interesting concept, but the story is a super bare bones high school coming of age plot with a bit of DC superheroes think in. It would take a lot more creative brain power to add pizzazz to a fix it fic. Plus, the whole time you might just be thinking you’d be better off making an original YA story if you wanna write about teen angst, or use better, preestablished DC characters if you wanna write about Superheroes. HGS has a whole unique (very flawed) cast of characters, setting, and plot to play with with you want to improve upon it all.
There’s less excuses when it comes to written porn though. HGS has got IANS beat on that front too
