    Can't do magic because OVERTHINKING

  2. 2 years ago

Well that's debatable in a fantasy setting where wizards exist. But Adventure time is post apocalyptic so maybe that is actually the case. I don't actually remember if the show ever explained how magic works in universe, and if it is just weird science or not.

      Anonymous

There were episodes where it shows that magic users almost always have to trade their sanity when using it, except for a few specific instances, so that's interesting. Elementals don't have to trade their sanity assumedly, since PB and the other element users seem to be fine. And also PB uses scientific ideas to activate her powers, so she's kind of onto something here.

        Anonymous

None of the elementals were sane in the first place.

        Anonymous

I don't think you necessarily have to trade sanity. Betty said both madness and sadness correlates with magical ability, so theoretically, you don't have to be insane to wield magic. Marceline is able to do magic and though she's relatively sane, she does have a lot of baggage. Huntress Wizard is another magical, seemingly sane character, so I guess it should be assumed she has a dark past of some kind.

She'll probably attribute it to her demon ancestry or vampire powers, or some weird reaction of the two being together.

Not really. The Series Finale was based on her still lying and playing her wannabee bannana republic bullshit by hiding her family from everyone else and it even ends with her going Sith Lord with new Gumbald Guardians/Putting everyone in capsules. Obsidian tries to whitewash her again but instead just says that they're together out of guilt since Marcy banged her when she was a jailbait groupie at one of her concerts and she started becoming tyrannical shortly afterwards. Even the end has her go back to her old ways until she remembers to fake her redemption to keep Marcy as her frickbuddy.

That was understandable because Candy People are generally, pretty stupid and need PB's leadership to survive.

I think she only did that as a last resort after the Candy Kingdom fell and there was no way to salvage it.

Also, the tree that Neddy is sustained was shown to have died, which means that Neddy starved to death so without Neddy, the Candy people would have died regardless....

My complaint is that whether or not it is underatood as a scientific phenomena or not is irrelevant to the fact that it is still called magic.
I am not saying it is not something measurable as data. Science is information. When you learn the properties of something, it in of itself does not become "science".

my point was that it might be magic doesn't have a set structure or set rules and as such trying to understand it through the scientific method is impossible since it's inherently unknowable

a key factor in science is that the core rules are universal both in space and time, and that nothing is ever invented, only discovered
as such any discovery you make has only 2 states: true and untrue and can only be proven or disproven

if magic's core rules are either unknowable or else mutable then you can't perform science on them since a discovery which is true now might not be true later

When you read a book, the way our reality works and the way the story works are not necessarily one to one, and people who act like they are are deluding themselves. It's the same thing here: The setting exists as a narrative separate from the actual physics of the real world, but influenced by it. The rules of that setting are hopefully consistent with themselves, but need not be strictly consistent with our reality (to do otherwise would be too difficult to model, for one).
It's nice and all to say a setting is scientifically realistic.
    It's another to prove it.
Kind of funny: She's correct within the narrative because she's wrong outside of it- her claim that magic is actually science is a narrative conceit, not an observable principle.

I'm sad this barely lasted for an episode. I'm okay with it going bad, I just wanted to explore it for a little more. Imagine if Marceline saw her ex like that? That would be hilarious.

    >I'm a scientist living in a world of fantasy, deities, magic and all sort of incredible things
    >rather than accept the fact that the world I live in is so complex it can manifest through magic which at this point in my career I cannot explain I will make a point to reject the very fabric that makes up my world
    >I could admit that the world I live in has not come even remotely close to explain the dynamics in which deities, magic and all of these sort of incredible things happen and thus be humble as I seek knowledge
    >but I'd rather be a moron with a shoulder on my chip religiously praising science even though science bases its improvement on things we cannot explain yet
What's the opposite of a character arc?
    Because Princess Bubblegum had that.

How can she be right about magic when you're talking about fiction in a magical setting?

She just made because she can't do it.

She claims to be a genius but she often does stupid things, like not paying attention to her own Kingdom at all while someone is openly trying to take over right outside her window, and just shooing everyone away when they try to tell her.

Explaining something doesn't mean it stops being what it is. Because we know more about electricity does not mean that it is not electricity or energy anymore.

He is comparing it to computer code, he's not saying it's computer code. He even calls it Magic at the end of that sequence, having learned what magic is, something previously unknown to him, and on the next page he says it is good to still be able to learn new things.

he's not explaining, he's gloating, he's basically telling them that the craft they believe to be the most superior and special is nothing but remnants of even bigger things, those bigger things being Manhattan's absolute power to control reality itself. then he just proceeds to apropiate of their magic and use it agains them like it was nothing still gloating that he now has learned "magic"

The writer Is tard who's equating magic to something else he doesn't understand and just handwaiving it with muh powers

          It's bad writing.

This was true in the lore at the time the episode was written. All the magic was just mutations. But they kept rewriting the lore, and actual magic was introduced.

You cannot tell me PB was originally planned to be a part of some grand elemental shit that would eventually include fricking Slime Princess of all things. During early AT, and likely even up to this episode in question, all magic in the show likely was science. Until they decided to go "frick it" and auto felate themselves over Ice King's back story some more.

    Betty was a mistake.

It is the opposite, all super advanced "science" in cartoons is magic. It has no basis on logic or research, it produce miraculous results with no proper reason to do so, it is magic.

What sickens me is hiw basic science is pushed to mythical levels so labcoat wearers can be respected and revered religiously and their foolish words can carry more weight.

How does she explain emitter magic then? That breaks scientific laws.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Cell phones would seem like witchcraft to even an early 20th century person. Just because we can't imagine how the crown might work doesn't mean it may not be very advanced science.

Nothing in AT is consistent, there's no point to trying to figure it out

Nah, magic IS a science, but what she's trying to say is that the effects that cause magic can be boiled down into existing fields. Take gravity for example: you could say it's magic, because we know mass has gravity but we don't know WHY mass has gravity or what medium allows gravity to interact with other objects, but we study enough of mass and energy to create physics. Magic cannot always be reduced down to its finest bits, but she wants to reduce it down enough that you could fit a creature's mana generation and conductivity into biology, or a magical crystal's properties into geology

But it's clear magic doesn't actually align with any of those, and science's attempts to use magic still rely on magical components, so chemistry/robotics/genetic engineering/etc. that results in magic doesn't funnel magic into those fields, just like a knight using a magic item doesn't suddenly funnel all magic into a martial art. It's chemistry interacting with magic or robotics interacting with magics and so on.

Plus, wizards basically are the scientists of magic with how they study and conduct experiments and what not. That's the true qualifier for what makes a "science." Scientists being mad about it are just butthurt autists that are mad they can't fit it into existing schemas or that their credentials don't transfer.

Seems pretty obvious magic is real in AT. You can't science your way out of all of that. PB was just coping.

Does the show even support that or is it really just bubblegum being an ass

From what I recall magic directly correlates to how much people believe it in adventure time which is why the elementals were weak as frick pre-apocalypse. So yes she is just being moronic and even if she was correct trying to scientifically understand magic would likely just make it weaker
